View Full Version : Thinking about getting an iTouch

So, I have some money spare, I'm thinking about putting it towards an iTouch, I would have loved an iPhone however the 16gb is $717 (£440) and thats pay and go (because definitely not doing contract). Then again I dont really use my phone that much, send alot of sms's but I already have a phone.
iTouch 16gb 2nd Gen is $320 (£196) so thats the one I'm thinking about getting. Is that the latest version? I would probably update it so version 3 update after bugs have been fixed with apps.
Would you guys recommend getting one? I will love playing with apps and games, use it as mp3 player and surf the net. Is there any downside to it?
Does 2nd generation include a speaker, as in can I turn songs on and not have headphones in? I would do it whilst driving.
I would probably jailbreak it after so long but not initially. I would also probably try to develop apps for it or is the SDK only for iPhones? I know you can get films and videos, are they only done via iTunes or can I copy ones from my pc to it?
If you have a 16gb, do you feel thats enough space?
Cheers.

I have a 8 gig and I feel it is enough. Not to little but not a EXTRA LOT. But I never run out of space.

I would probably update it so version 3 update after bugs have been fixed with apps. I have yet to hear of any bugs in real applications, and the jailbreak extension stuff is getting fixed up rather rapidly.
Would you guys recommend getting one? Yes I will love playing with apps and games, use it as mp3 player and surf the net. Is there any downside to it? No. Well... ok, you need iTunes and therefore Windows or a Mac to sync music on the newest OS... but that doesn't affect you.

Yes it does.

You can copy videos from your PC, best format is MP4. Also, if you jailbreak, there are a number of apps that let you use other formats easily (I think vlc4iphone does video... not sure, have to check)
If you have a 16GB, do you feel thats enough space? I have an 8GB, but I don't listen to much music. Also, ftfy.
Cheers.

You can use other formats? Even if there not compressed and converted for the video formats accepted? :O

What's an iTouch ?
An iPhone, just without the phone. The First Gen does not have a camera either, and I believe that is also the case with the Second Gen iTouch.

New one will have a camera and will probably run at iPhone 3GS speeds. Other than that, I wouldn't worry about it.

The name iTouch has been in common use since the first gen.
(And no, it doesn't have a camera, but that's what cameras are for...)
I haven't read the rumors on the 3rd gen... Don't really care, already have my second gen and I'm getting a iPhone 3GS sometime soon.

Ah wait for that ZuneHD, even I'll get that.
But if you feel the need to listen to your beatz now, then go for it, it's a pretty cool device, especially if you're in a place full of open wi-fi's =D

why would you wanna toggle ssh?

why would you wanna toggle ssh?
Because most people are too lazy to change the password, and the default gives you complete system access as root?

No, in case you leave the wifi on in a public place (or worse yet, are actively using it). You're a sitting duck if someone discovers you.

Yeah, the first thing I did when I installed ssh, was to change the root pass and username.

totally forgot about pandora and fstream.
fstream lets you load up any .mp3 based streaming playlist. so, say, anything from sky.fm or di.fm.

Yeah the iTouch is a good buy if you want all the cool multimedia/multitasking stuff the iPhone has to offer, but aren't actually interested in the phone. I have one and love it. Apple products rule!

So your saying I shouldnt use a public wifi? Could they steal my account usernames/passwords?
Why the hell has Apple included a stocks app, who the hell uses it apart from people with shares or people in finance? I cant delete it either, stupid.
I'm considering upgrading to 3.0 and maybe jailbreaking it. Jailbreaking enables you to download the apps that cost?

He's saying if you have open SSH either toggle it off when using public wifi or change the password for it.
Jailbreaking allows you to use Apps that aren't authorized on the appstore. Don't talk about using it for piracy, because not only is it obviously not allowed here, the majority of apps have prices under 10$, and almost all have lite versions for you to try out before buying.

Teleport lite is an interesting little app to remotely control your computer. (Wireless mouse and all, just use your finger =)
All I know is that the full version allows you to also see the screen on your ...screen.

I just noticed it also goes by the name Jaadu VNC
Welp I guess the lite version doesn't excist anymore, but I have the full version (25 bucks...sheesh better get mocha vnc if you don't want to spend that much on a remote VNC but still want one)
And I just got mocha vnc, the refresh rates are about the same, but the mouse movement is choppy. I do like the landscape support and being able to move the screen like a page (as opposed to jaadu's inverted way).
The mouse controls however are simpler on Jaadu, exactly like a mouse except there's no scroll D: The mouse pointer is much more precise because the mouse moves with teh screen.
Yea, mocha has similar features, but I wouldn't exactly it handles them better. The factor that kills the fun is the inprecise mouse movement (and its choppy movement) but otherwise, most of the features are the same. The only cool thing that I can distinguish mocha from jaadu is landscape mode.

To scroll in Jaadu you have to use two fingers and slide up/down. Also, if your controls are inverted, enable Touchscreen mode under Advance before connecting to your server. You can also choose the color amount there as well.
