View Full Version : I'd put my Dark in her Energy Rifle (i.e. new weapon)

I was thinking about this effect style and bouncing around some concepts to utilize; after a bit of trouble getting Halo's engine to work (it likes to interpret black as transparency, and since there's a lot of black, it's hard to work around), I've got myself a nice start. This is the Dark Energy Rifle.

(wtf since when did Youtube IDs have underscores)
_VgrTyHhqOw

As of the moment, it's using all the same weapon properties (damage, rate of fire, and such) as the Plasma Rifle, and I have yet to begin working on impact effects. It's also extremely WIP; more will probably be added to the projectile.

I figured if I had mentioned that, it would have killed the thread, so I didn't. It really looks sweet, and especially good for a Halo 1 projectile + fx.

That's some straight up dope stuff man.
I'm assuming your going to change the overheat effect too?

That looks badass beyond words.

Too bad there's no practical application for it, unlike your previous effect edits.

Not necessarily. I've been working on a unique behavior for this; while I've got appointments up the ass today, I should have a prototype working in a day or two.

Concepts include splash damage, long-lasting AOE damage, and separating into smaller projectiles after impact.

That does indeed look badass, but it'll only truly be awesome when you finish it. Go, do so now.

I don't suppose it would be possible to have the projectiles cast huge ass shadows would it?

sevlag
July 13th, 2009, 02:15 PM
now this projectile looks like something that would be shot out of a sort of gravity-esque rifle (not the actual G rifle, something that is the same dimensions of it)

looks great man

Impact effect added in, some cleaner particles; particularly the electricity.

The next big hurdle is the lighting. Either I find a way to manipulate the engine into making hueg-ass shadows out of small particles (not likely) or make it pure white (more likely but less awesome.) Alternatively, I could just axe any dynamic lights altogether, but I'd rather not do that.

I'm also not sure if I should use a decal or not, and if so, what the design would be. The obvious choice is black center with white edges, but that just looks like a white plasma burn.

Do a deep red/orange/yellow molten color, with those little lightning things dancing around it.

EX12693

NO. The decal should be a bunch or crazy criss-cross boun marks, like from the lightning where the projectile hits.

Also, make the plasma rifle black with purple lights...

Ifafudafi
July 14th, 2009, 11:56 PM
I'm trying to stick to a completely monochromatic color palette here; the problem with the decal isn't the shape, but the color placement. I'll try a couple of things here and there and post once I've gotten something good.

As for dynamic lighting, it's going to be either nonexistant or white. I'm liking white a bit better at the time.

OK well, dark energy screws sh*t up. It's hard to choose the right color for the decal... but it shouldn't be monochrome.
For a good "molten" color... take a needler, put bottomless clip on, go up to a wall and hold the triger for about a minute. The ring. That's your color... like this:

Go for the white lights on a black plasma rifle for the actual gun. Can't have 2 weapons looking the same.

That is one bad-ass decal you have there. Looks like someone took a laser and burned the shit out of something.

EX12693
July 15th, 2009, 07:48 PM
Well, all it is is about 500 needler decals layered over each other with about a 10 degree spread from about 1 step away from the wall.

It would look more awesome if it were 0 spread. I'll try and get another pic.

For the huge ass-shadow, try this:

Make a circular (or sphere) model for your projectile. For its shader, give it a blank shader, set to invisible and render only. See if it still casts shadows.

Are you thread jacking or are you two partners?

Ifafudafi
July 15th, 2009, 10:07 PM
He's thread-jacking.

For one, I've stated that this will be entirely monochromatic and I intend to stick to that design. Two, I've never stated exactly how powerful this gun is. Thirdly, you're thread-jacking. :nsmug:

As for progress, I've reskinned the rifle (just a quick color-swap; gun is black and lights are white) and added in some particles here and there. I've decided to stick with white lights rather than massive shadows, and have placed those accordingly.

Expect a release as soon as I get the decals figured out. What I want to do later is take the "dark energy" style and apply it to other weapons; notably the plasma grenade and plasma pistol. They will function the same, but they'll have a visual overhaul.

Would be awesome if you can make it so that you can charge it up like the plasma pistol. Or make the colors invert when the person gets hit (could have sworn this was possible somehow).

Still looks great tho!

It is, it's pretty easy too. It's one of the built-in screen flash effects, same as the way your screen flashes certain colours when you take hits.

EX12693

Monoccrome. OK. Why not take a decal I have and make it black and white? Sry for the thread jacking. :ugh:

How would you invert the colors?

Stick to the monochromatic design, faff-daff, but make it shaped like this one

I said that already. I forgot what that was from. I believe it was the plasma rifle that shot needles in chaosgulch. So Take an needler decal, make it 200x as intense and twirl it a bit...

Here's the decal I'm using.

http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/5200/dedecal.jpg

I'm cleaning effects and sorting tags; I'll whip up a quick video demonstration afterwards, and release it. While it was designed with my updated PR model/animations in mind, it's easily compatible with the stock PR as well. A bit of tweaking may be necessary to get it perfect, however.

I'm aiming to get it released tonight, but it might have to wait until tomorrow if I run into any issues.

FRain
July 16th, 2009, 11:40 PM
If you're looking to get an inversion of color when you get hit, like you said earlier, go into the damage effect tag, set the max intensity to 1, the alpha to 0, and the color to one, set type to invert, and dink around with the length until you like it.

I also, might personally feature this in my mod.

E: I was thinking stealth brutes with dark energy rifles..... hmm kickass.

Silver PR.

With a crazy design on it, really hardly visible like the hexagons on the current one, but something trippier.

While color inversion is fitting, I think it'll be annoying as all motherfuck to get shot by this thing if you do that.

Ifafudafi
July 17th, 2009, 12:54 AM
Argh! Thanks for reminding me polar.

Yeah, I stuck with a color inversion. I haven't playtested this (you guys can do that better) but if it's too annoying, than you can change it easily.

Relockin' thread.
