You know, I am getting sick and fucking tired of people pulling the race card. It's being used so much lately that I'm not even finding it a valid excuse any more, and is almost always used against WHITE people. Really, when was the last time you heard news about a Black person calling someone racist who isn't white? This is just my opinion, but it's events like this that make me feel that there is a lot of racism against white people from people of different ethnicity, but since we're white, we're not allowed to say that for fear of being called racists ourselves. No I'm not a white supremacist or anything like that. I'm looking for equality of all people, including white people.
But that's just me. Discuss.

That's bullshit. They had the right to ask him what he was doing, because they couldn't tell it was his house. The person being racist is Gates, and that's against himself for being such an idiot.

Haha, so wait. He goes and tries to enter his house. But he is using force and he doesn't expect the police to come and see what is happening? Hell, even a neighbor seen the guy trying to go in with force or what ever you call it. Blah, its sad.
Here is another thing I noticed. When a joke is made toward a black person (like the transformers robots, which I don't see how) all the black people go ape-shit. When a joke saying that white people will work at MacDonald's when they grow up, it gets laugh and its basically over. Wtf?

0 times.

I've been friends with people of different cultures, race, etc. You can't just down right randomly talk to someone who is a different race and crack a race joke. I hang out most of the time with my asian friends and we crack jokes on each others race and stuff, nothing to harsh though. As long as you meet new people that are different and interesting then you won't really fear the fact of being a racist. Somethings though should be obvious that could offend people and you should avoid saying it.
No I'm not a white supremacist.
Liar, jk.
I'm looking for equality of all people, including white people.
Equality does exist. Maybe it seems that way to you because most people don't bother meeting other people because of race, religion, etc. They fear of the fact that they are different which in reality they are interesting and fun to communicate with.
Overall, I know what you are trying to say. There are still people who rather not hang out with different people because of fear. This guy in the article though was just a plain out wack job. Although, for his age maybe he experienced a flashback from his past that involved cops and intense racism.

Someone (you know who you are) brought up an interesting point to me in private about this discussion.
The claim is that I am implying that I am disadvantaged because I am a white male, hence the reason for my complaining. That is NOT even close to the case. I never said I was disadvantaged, nor did I claim that I felt anyone was above me. I simply said that there is racism against white people, and it's a subject not often talked about.
As annoyed as I am that I have to clarify that, there you go.

I think he's pushing it too far, but the fact they were disinclined to believe him when he said it was his house is likely related to him being black.
Seems like he was ready to pounce though, absolutely a terrible idea unless his interest is actually in the prolonging of conflict?
People pulling the race card out of their ass bothers me because it makes decent folks feel like social interaction with blacks is some sort of minefield, which obviously does nothing to ease tensions. Besides, it distracts from the actual way in which people are still socioeconomically oppressed along racial lines.
I agree with snaf, let's just interfuck until we're all a nice shade of coffee 'n' cream...

To be dead honest, out here you wouldn't be far wrong if you said that outright. Basically if you're Australian-born and not of indigenous descent, Centrelink gives no fuck. If you're an immigrant (from virtually anywhere, mind, so I guess this isn't so much race as just nationality) or you're even vaguely of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, they're all too happy to throw money at you. That said, they're currently running an intervention where they pretty much regulate the incomes, purchases and whatnot of Aboriginal families in certain areas to try and prevent alcoholism and child abuse - perhaps they'd be wiser to implement it for some of the white families around where I live as well, since they're the ones who really need to be watched.
I was always led to believe equality meant everyone was exactly equal, but here we are with it only being OK to take the piss out of straight white men with no physiological problems, (some) women ranting and raving about things like porn but naturally not giving a fuck if it's a man being 'exploited', and the government assuming only Aboriginal communities can have useless, drug-addled bogans. I guess I was wrong or something?

This thread got me thinking about a comedy album by Jeff Wayne. Here's a particularly appropriate discussion about racism from his album:

Something tells me it'll be just as bad, if not worse. We were raised by our parents, and they by theirs, and all the way back to when racism was life. Racism will always exist between humans because humans will always find a way to justify themselves as better than someone else, regardless of whether it is a logical reason or not. The race card is bullshit nowadays, everyone and their mother is being racially discriminated against. And the fucking tabloids aren't helping either, what with their reporting of every single time a white guy bats an eye at a black guy.

That cop had every right to suspect Gates of breaking/entering. If I have to break into my own home one day and someone who doesn't already know I live there witnesses the act, that someone isn't doing any wrong by calling the cops, because it just looks "that way" and it's not like he can read my mind. All I have to do is cooperate with the police and clarify the situation and then forget about it and move on. IMO, the fact that someone calls the cops after suspecting a break-in is a sign that that someone actually cares about other people and is willing to help if there really is a problem. We can all be mistaken, and mistakes like this are very easy to correct. Gates unnecessarily aggravated the problem and unfortunately there are too many idiots (not just of the same race) out there who will side with him.
Gates, and the others who claim racial profiling, are all idiots.

Yeah, but if he'd cooperated then they might not have given him an excuse to cry racism!

That cop had every right to suspect Gates of breaking/entering. The issue isnt the cop suspected him. The issue is, the guy was in the house, he could have produced endless amounts of proof that it was his house. Did the cops let him? No, and thats the issue.
If I lose my keys and have to break into my own home, I am entitled to do whatever the fuck I want, unless it damages public or other peoples private property. If a cop came around and was like "hey wtf you doing?" I would be pleased, they are checking up. If however, after I explained to the police that it was my house and I lost the keys they went, "um yeah right bs". I would be pissed.
The man had every right to be pissed off.
I will jump to conclusions and the cops acted like idiots and I bet his race had a direct effect on his arrest.
The man doesnt seem like the guy who suddenly turns around and goes ape shit, I believe the cops made it up.
Was it bad he pulled the race card? thats completely irrelevant.

Except when he gives proof of residence the cops need to gtfo. once he furnishes ID what's the reason to pursue matters further? According to Gate's account, he showed his license and his university badge.

Precisely, I believe he wanted to but the cops wouldnt let him, and because he was black assumed the worse.

The issue wasn't a failure to produce identification, it was that he only produced it after harassing the officers, and accusing one of being racist. There was no need for disorderly conduct, especially by a man of his standing.

The cops should've left once he showed ID, but honestly... if you start kicking off just because the cops ask you to identify yourself, you can expect a hard time.

You have every right to ask a police officer to state their name, which police station they belong to, their badge number and identification to prove they are a police officer.
