So I went on ebay, and I bought a cable that would convert HDMI to VGA, but it just won't work, and I don't know why, could it be faulty? Or was it really VGA to HDMI?
I plugged it into my ps3, then i plugged it into my monitor with no success. any ideas?

I wasn't aware that HDMI could be converted to VGA at all by means of a simple adapter...

First, check if the PS3 is still working right...plug it into a device with component or straight up HDMI. If it doesn't work, your Blu-Ray drive is probably shot (this is the RRoD of PS3s, which SONY keeps quiet) and will need replacing.

If you got some extraordinarily cheap deal on this adapter off ebay, chances are it could be fake or simply broken (caveat emptor!)

But yeah, like Warsaw said you should also test to make sure the PS3 is still working properly. If you don't have a HDMI-port TV (if so, get one :P), the PS3 always comes with component cables in the box that you can use on a regular TV.

Ps3 works via component, and so does 360, but neither of them work via the adapter :S

Is it possible that it was only intended to be a PC > TV adapter?

Its possible, and most likely, anyone know of something that is reasonably priced that works for ps3 and 360?

Are you plugging into your monitor or into your computer? You can't do the latter unless you have a TV-tuner or All-In-Wonder (discontinued ATI series of VGA cards) card. As for the former, I'd suggest an DVI-to-HDMI if you can, since that maintains a native format for the signal. You'll just have to get some audio adapters to get the component audio signal to a set of external speakers.

I don't have to worry about the speakers part, but today when I went to radioshack the hdmi-dvi adapters they had there where 38$ >.>

The consoles only output digital on HDMI so those adapters won't do anything...

Damn, any suggestions of something I should buy then? Or just seperate cables?

Doesn't the ps3 have VGA hookups like the x360 does?

e: HDMI to DVI should work fine though

PS3 does not have VGA hookups; at least mine doesn't (40GB model). Also, Warsaw, can you explain why/how a shot Blu-Ray drive would cause the display output on a PS3 to stop working? Admittedly, one of my friends bought a PS3 with a shot Blu-Ray drive (Blockbuster admitted they dropped one on arrival and never tested it) and all it did was refuse to read discs. Started up normally.

Because when you put in a game it can't read it and thus crashes, giving you a blank screen. :downs: I had this issue once before, just needed to take it to the shop and get it swapped out.

Ahh, that would suck.

IIRC, HDCP Content protection will stop the console from outputting anything onto the TV, or will cause the TV to not accept any video input, if an analog connection is detected on either end.

You can thank Hollywood for that one.
