I'm guessing there's a little clause in the AT&T contract that its users accept which states that they have the authority to deny access to sites, which pretty much makes any argument invalid, unless you can throw a 1st Amendment at them, which'll take forever to properly affect anything.
Likely, /b/ will spam the shit out of AT&T representatives until they get bored or AT&T changes something. Guess which one will happen first.
Of course, I do indeed think this is bullshit, and am currently composing a well-written, angry e-mail to send off.

I saw the thread on /g/ (Technology) a few minutes ago. Bunch of /b/tards going in there right now and whining about it.
Thread going on about it on /b/, too. Iphone users and anyone using AT&T 3G can get on, but landlines are a no-go. Not sure how much longer it'll be until it spreads to 3G, too.
Basically, any servers filed under img.4chan.org (the infamous /b/ and the actually not bad /r9k/) are blocked.
I'm glad they chose 4chan first, not because I hate the guys on /b/ (I pop in there every now and then, too, mostly to try to get a quick laugh), but because I know /b/ is most likely to launch a counterattack. Bunch of threads flying around right this very moment, actually, all planning some sort of retaliation. Most are promoting diplomacy and angry letters, surprisingly. I only count 1 thread trying to get people to DDOS the AT&T site.

@ Masterz:
You may not like /b/, but this is the first step towards them censoring anything they want. Someone is publishing stuff which AT&T doesn't want you to hear about? They get blacklisted. Competitor websites (Verizon, for example)? Blacklisted.

Really, all the internet needs to do in order to convince AT&T that they're being idiots is to send them a bunch of e-mails that they're changing services due to the implications of this blacklisting. If they're threatened with a large enough loss of potential profits, they'll pull back.

4chan isn't going to counter this. Everyone on 4chan who cares about this can't go to img.4chan anymore (and will probably get banned for spamming the other forums), and everyone who can still go to /b/ and /r9k/ won't do anything because they don't care.

They should take the legal route with judges and fucking horizontal/vertical accountability.
And it should honestly be about fuckin' child porn... else we'll creep ever closer to China's no-disguise blackout of CNN and other things they find "bad".
Seriously, watch CNN in a Chinese hotel... story occurs they don't like? It goes black... 2 minutes later it's back...

And this isn't about blocking Child Porn... AT&T didn't do it nationally... they didn't claim Child Porn... they just did it because they could.

Some /b/tard found out that they didn't block it because of CP (that's just the official story).
In reality, all the newfags who have been downloading viruses and inadvertantly DDoSing 4chan are the problem. It's wrecking AT&T's bandwidth; they're blocking it to prevent that.

just a general fyi for everyone, since alot more people than i expected dont know this, but 4chan was originally created just to be an image upload site, and all of the /<letter here>/ parts of the site denote what kind of pictures can be found there. /b/ is for "random", and for example, /k/ is weapons
censoring a "random image" section of a site means they are censoring anything that can be considered "random". last time i checked, if i generate a random number, it can be any number. if im going to censor random numbers, then im censoring all of the numbers. and what logical reason could they possibly have for censoring 4chan's random image board? to stop kids from being desensitised? thats fine, shut down the idiots at 4chan while thousands of raunchy porn sites are free to contaminate the minds of the children, who are quite possibly those same little assfucks who backtalk their parents for half an hour asking fordemanding a chalupa.

Personally I'd be glad to see 4chan wiped off the internet entirely, but censorship is a terrible idea thought up by terrible people. IF this is legit and IF it's because of bandwidth issues, then fine - it's understandable and they'll probably resolve it at some point. It's not likely to spread to other sites. If it's actual censorship, though, I really hope something forces AT&T to back down. Maybe it'll help drive another nail into the coffin of Conjob Conroy's own little internet filter...

You have no idea how 4chan works, do you?
So do any of you think the government should not block kiddie porn sites?
They should take them on via the usual legal system, not block them.
In reality, all the newfags who have been downloading viruses and inadvertantly DDoSing 4chan are the problem. It's wrecking AT&T's bandwidth; they're blocking it to prevent that.
Why wouldn't they just come out and say that then, I'd accept that as a much more legitimate reason than the usual OMGTHEYHAVECP crap.
Personally I'd be glad to see 4chan wiped off the internet entirely
That happens for a few days, every other month.
4chan doesn't go away though, the community just moves elsewhere (/b/ shits on /x/ if it's just /b/ that's down, or everyone goes to other *chans if the whole site is offline).
4chan's legacy is here to stay, like it or not. As it stands, 4chan is actually containing the mess (I'm mainly talking about /b/ here, most of the other boards are pretty good).

I'd see it as a more legitimate reason too, but think about most of the common internet userbase. They hear at&t blocked a kiddie porn site. Not only does that sound like a "good" reason to block the site, it actually gets people on their side rather than staying neutral. Now some (stupid) people can be like, "hey my isp blocks kiddie porn what does your shitty isp do? :realsmug:" Or if someone brings it up on some news show they can ask a normal person, uneducated about any of this (read: damn near everyone), and they'd be like, "oh yeah sounds like a great thing at&t is doing."

From the 4chan statusblog:
Here's what happened:
For the past three weeks, 4chan has been under a constant DDoS attack. We were able to filter this specific type of attack in a fashion that was more or less transparent to the end user.
Unfortunately, as an unintended consequence of the method used, some Internet users received errant traffic from one of our network switches. A handful happened to be AT&T customers.
In response, AT&T filtered all traffic to and from our img.4chan.org (http://img.4chan.org/) IPs (which serve /b (http://img.4chan.org/b/imgboard.html)/ & /r9k (http://img.4chan.org/r9k/imgboard.html)/) for their entire network, instead of only the affected customers. AT&T did not contact us prior to implementing the block. Here is their statement regarding the matter (http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=4800&cdvn=news&newsarticleid=26970).
In the end, this wasn't a sinister act of censorship, but rather a bit of a mistake and a poorly executed, disproportionate response on AT&T's part. Whoever pulled the trigger on blackholing the site probably didn't anticipate [nor intend] the consequences of doing so.
We're glad to see this short-lived debacle has prompted renewed interest and debate over net neutrality and internet censorship—two very important issues that don't get nearly enough attention—so perhaps this was all just a blessing in disguise.
Aside from that, I'll also add that there is some big news due later this week. Keep an eye on the News (http://www.4chan.org/news) page, Twitter (http://twitter.com/4chan), and global message for updates.
As always, I can be reached at moot@4chan.org (moot@4chan.org).
