View Full Version : Considering picking up a GameCube, what games should I be after?

So yeah, a gamecube. Been wanting to get one for a while, I'm coming into some money this weekend and among other things, i'll see if anywhere still carries second hand ones (last I saw they were like $40, and that's a year ago).
but obviously, I need some games.
What I've been wanting (in no particular order):
Windwaker
Metroid (which one?)
Pikmin (1 or 2?)
Beyond good and evil
Maybes:
Possibly killer 7?
paper mario?
rogue leader?
Monkeyball?
Viewtiful Joe?
How good was Sunshine? (keep in mind I never played SM64)
Any great sleepers I've never heard of? Cult classics? I don't care if it's the flashiest graphics, I just want good, solid games.
PS: I don't give much of a fuck about SSB:M, but if I see it somewhere cheap I'll consider it.

I'm no Nintendo fanboy, and SSB isn't exactly known for it's deep good gameplay.
I'd pick it up as a party game but that's about it. The reason I'm getting a GC is to play great games I missed out of back in the day.

Mario Kart Double Dash
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (it's a remake of the old 1998 PS1 game, with better graphics and new moves. Same levels and plot)
there are also some good 3rd party games that also released on Xbox and PS2 but still performed well on the GC. 007 Everything or Nothing is one example, along with some of the Crash Bandicoot games.

Definitely get Prime 1. Prime 2 was the last fun of the 3 games (not to say it wasn't fun... it drags on though and you'll probably have a better first experience with the first game).
I had Viewtiful Joe and I didn't really like it. After playing through it once I didn't touch it again unless I wanted to remember something; the gameplay felt really repetitive to me.
Sunshine was fun enough. It also got repetitive after a while, but I didn't mind.
The thing about SSB is you really need friends who are also into playing it. It's a game you play with others if you want to have fun. If you know people who like and you can have them over to play it then I'd say go for it, but if not then don't bother.

Windwaker's an essential one.
I enjoyed the first Metroid Prime more than the second, although they're both great games.
Both Pikmin's are good, you'll enjoy both equally imo.
Super Mario Sunshine is a great Mario game, probably the weakest 3D Mario so far, but by no means is it a bad game.
The Rogue Squadron games are good. Rebel Strike tended to have too many on-foot or ground based missions and the few flying missions were very linear. So I'd recommend Rogue Leader over Rebel Strike.
What else...?
F-Zero GX is fantastic.
I haven't played Viewtiful Joe but I've heard some good things about it.
If you can find a copy that is under $100(AUS) MGS: Twin Snakes is a good one to pick up. Though it is extremely rare and is often sold for ridiculous prices.
There's probably more, but I can't think of them right now.

Twilight Princess is also for the gamecube if you don't have a wii it's still a good game to play without motion control. Resident Evil 4 was also a great game but you may have already played it on another console.

Wii's are more expensive but you can still play gamecube games on it. I had a gamecube but no good games come to mind.

except that the gamecube version is buggy, lacks blood effects, and just doesnt seem authentic.
i dont care what anyone says, pikmin 1 and 2 are some of the greatest games iv ever played.
super mario sunshine is wonderful
animal crossing was pretty good back when i was a kid and had no friends or computer, but i wouldnt play it anymore now that i have morrowind
luigi's mansion was short but i thought it was great
i got alot of play time out of super smash bros melee, except i suck ass at it and i dont play it anymore
and finally, zelda the windwaker is fucking great. you must get it, or im going to put a poorly drawn sign on your lawn instructing you to both stop posting and turn in your gamecube
E: and rayman 3 was actually pretty good. if the gameplay isnt good for you, its funny as hell

Great game, great shooter, fun as hell. Some of the best third party stuff Nintendo's got.

007 Nightfire is the best 007 game on the gamecube. It is insanely fun for the singleplayer, and has ok graphics. The multiplayer on splitscreen is just orgasmic. By far my mose favorite game on the gamecube. I used to go to my friend's house and play for hours.

Sonic Adventure 2 was the last good Sonic game, and it was REALLY good.
007: Agent Under Fire and Nightfire were both really good as well. The multiplayer can be pretty fun for both games, especially after playing Halo and its imitators.

Metroid Prime 1 definitely. Wind Waker definitely. Collector's edition Zelda disc with both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask assuming you can find it and it's not worth a fortune. I had a good time playing Rogue Leader back in the day, remembered it was hard as shit though. Star Wars Bounty Hunter was alsome too, but also hard as hell. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast is probably considered to be a bad game by most, but it was good for shits and giggles and it was an accomplishment to make it through the whole thing(lolz old unreal engine).
F-Zero was the worse game ever created on GC, period. I boot it up during parties just to laugh at how bad it is.
As for games that were released cross platform, Resident Evil 4 is a must have, and had the best graphics on the GC being the only version with real time rendered cutscenes(unless you got a modded up PC version). Splinter Cell 1 was also probably one of the most solid 3rd party games I ever played on GC. Great story and action, though the rules need getting use to.

I had agent under fire on my PS2. Fun shit. Get both those 007 games for that gamecube. you won't regret.

SSBM is a lot deeper than you think sir, go watch an MLG match on youtube or somethin.
Nobody's mentioned Tales of Symphonia yet, twas an awesome RPG. Luigis Mansion, Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker (My favorite Zelda game), Pikmin was awesome, whoever hates on it just didn't like seeing their pikmin die.
Animal Crossing was neat, you're not really missing anything by getting the GCN version instead of the Wii or DS ones....
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is where the series hit it's peak. It's a really amazing game that's just done well. The controlls work, the art works, the side stuff is neat... overall the game just... does everything well.
Super Monkey Ball was neat, but if you have an Xbox go find Super Monkey Ball DX (or Deluxe, can't remember) it's the first two games rolled into one. (Pun intended)
Star Fox Adventures was pretty neat, you'd prolly be able to find it cheap :P (It's not oldschool starfox, it's an adventure/platformer)
If you're into music games there's a game called Donkey Konga out for the Wii. It's pretty simple though, so it's not all that challanging.... the thing is... is that there's an adventure/platformer game that you can get that uses the drum controller too called Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. I picked up Donkey Konga 1 and 2 used for like $8 each, and two drum sets for... I think $7 a piece at gamestop :P

You're a moron.
First off, it's Quake 3 engine.
Second, the Gamecube version of JK2 is widely recognized as a shitty port.

Forgot about this one. Might sound like a strange premise but this game was fucking awesome.

SSBM actually does have deep, good gameplay at least on par with any other fighter. It just happens to be a fun party game too.
I'd get:
Super Smash Bros: Melee - My favorite game, ever, on par with Halo.
Metroid Prime 1 - My third-favorite game, ever. There's Prime 2 too, but I suggest just sticking with Prime 1 unless you really enjoy it. Prime 2 isn't quite as good.
Tales of Symphonia - I have lots of good memories from this game. It's great if you can convince someone to play through with you, too. If you have a 360 though, just get Tales of Vesperia, which is an overall better game (note: the demo for it sucks).
Sunshine, Pikmin, Paper Mario, Double Dash, and Rogue Squadron 2 are also good.

I just realized I have over 25 GC games collected over the years.... these are some of my favorites.
Sonic Adventure 2
007 nightfire
time splitters 2
FUCKING PRINCE OF PERSIA. all of them (not sure if 3rd one is on gc)
I also enjoyed the Metal of Honor games, and the LotR Games based off the movies, but that may just be a matter of opinion. I was like 10 when I played these games, so they might not be as good as i thought they were then.

I don't like consoles that make you use memory cards. If I were you I wouldn't buy a GC, I'd buy an Xbox 1, it beats all.
