I have some cash to blow, and rather than get a steady girlfriend, I'm looking for some games to get

ultama is fucking useless at this, so I turn to you lot.

What are some good rtses and fpses that won't make my eyes bleed?

RTS - Men of War
FPS - Entire BiA series, ArmA and ArmA II, Fallout 3 (if you can look past Bethesda's laziness - all the characters look and sound the same, but otherwise it's pretty good), Red Orchestra: Ostfront and mods, Killing Floor, both Stalkers. I dunno what you do or don't have, but whatever.

In the case of the Stalkers and FO3, you've got not just hours but days, possibly weeks of SP gaming right there. ArmA and II both have their own editors so you can create your own missions until the cows come home; can't say I've finished either but there's always MP to keep you busy. BiA will keep you occupied for a while and RO/KF are good for MP.

MoW has SP, but it's iffy at times - MP is good, though.

Play Eve. It's pretty good if you turn off the interface and watch ships undock from jita.

What are some games like EVE that don't have a subscription? An RTS is fine.

Sins of a Solar Empire. I've never played it personally but I hear nothing but good things about it and long battles. I would try it but I don't think I want to waste my time fighting a single battle for 4 hours. Not unless it was some super awesome FPS that didn't suck because all teh people online were dumb ass idiots.

I played Sins, it was same experience I had with Supreme Commander, it was hard to get into at first because the game starts out so slow.

Finally another EVE player!
Not to derail, but what race are you? Minmatar here, been playing since last July, got around 16mil SP.

Also, Supreme Commander like many have suggested, amazing RTS. Probably my favorite of all time. (I can't wait for SupCom 2 to come out!)

I'm very tempted to play Eve Online. One of the only reasons I quite WoW (other than the constant grind) was that nobody I knew was on it.

Still, the subscriptions for it are quite expensive.

eve isn't really a game, it's more of a device that asks you to pay for waiting for something to happen.

It can actually be cheaper than WoW if you pay via Credit card and buy more than a month at a time. (I can buy a 3-month package for $38 online) or for $35, get a 2-month pass in store. I think a 12-month package runs for around $120, so you're saving ~$60. And if money is tight you can pay for one month then pay with ingame currency from then on. (Granted, this isn't always reliable, as prices for these PLEX Cards (Pilot License Extension) can fluctuate depending on where the market is at. For the past 4 months I've been dishing out 300mil for 30 more days, which isn't that difficult to come by once you're decently far into the game (Friend of mine has 21bil atm). I recommend just paying with $ though, much easier and less taxing if you don't have all the time in the world to play EVE.

But Neuro is almost correct, if you have no one to play with it is pretty boring. When I started, I had 3-4 good friends that played, so it was tons of fun. Trust me on that one.

Battlefield 2 is kind of a mix of both... does better at being an FPS though imo.

Other than that, Unreal Tournament 3 for a hi-resolution retro-style fragfest, WolfTeam for a free counter-strike clone, and Quake Live, simply because it's a free port of Quake 3 that you can play in your fucking browser.

Freelancer is a GREAT singleplayer game and the multiplayer can be decent on certain mod servers.

Earth and Beyond is an awesome abandonware mmorpg that's like a cross of Freelancer and EvE Online. Since the official game server shut down in 2004 you'll need to play on an emulated server, check out enb-emulator.com for info.

The storyline wasn't very good, if you're looking for a 3d modeling platform, you should try Blender. Much higher difficulty level and the control scheme is different, though.
