After consulting some /v/irgins about my Gamecube puzzle, I've been persuaded to get a 2nd hand Wii instead, mostly because of how easy modding it is.

I figure most people here have heard of Homebrew (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/Main_Page) and that some have tried it. Who here has experience? Any tips? What programs/games should I get?

Also, Wii games I should look into please (I've been largely ignoring this console since it came out :v:).

ps. I've asked PB and he says this thread's fine as long as we steer clear of any piracy discussion. :cop:

I was actually able to stick the Homebrew channel onto my Wii. I haven't actually used it for anything yet (I'm using the SD card for other things now), but I was able to get the Homebrew channel onto my Wii without the Twilight Princess exploit. If a mod is okay with it, I'll put the link to the Youtube video into my post.

I haven't really found much homebrew worth having on the Wii, and the backup loader that I used (this was a while ago... haven't looked into it much lately) was really slow and would mess up games often.

It might have gotten better since then though.

If you like Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort is fun. WiiPlay is good if you want an extra controller.

As for more "core" titles, while not my favorite version of SSB, SSB:Brawl is still a fun game. Super Mario Galaxy, LoZ: Twilight Princess, and Super Paper Mario are fun, too. I'm still playing through Okami, but I'm enjoying it. It's very Zelda-like. If you haven't gotten the earlier Prime games, then you can get the Metroid Prime collection that's releasing soon.

Never even knew modding started on the Wii. What does homebrewing allow you to do?

no idea what homebrew is, but get okami, for it is pure awesome, and right now, i'm playing trough it for a 2nd time to try and get 100% completion, mostly because my girlfriend is forcing me to go for 100% sometime. besides that, i think okami had the most original end-boss i've ever had the pleasure of fighting in a game tbh. (shit took me almost 2 hours :x )

Yeah, the Twilight Princess hack is actually pretty interesting. There's an exploit in the gamesave code. It turns out that if you create a gamesave with just the right size, etc. you can place code that will be executed.

This is exactly how most non-Trojan (ie: You didn't explicitly allow it to run) viruses get installed.

This is why it's so hard to detect if a virus is in your PC... all of a suddon it runs legitimate code and it reaches a spot in memory that SHOULD be MORE legitimate code, but was overwritten by illegitimate code. A computer being a dumb box sees code in the spot of RAM it is told to look in -- and executes it.

In the Twilight Princess Hack's case, it's code to load homebrews and stuff... but that's exactly how viruses get installed into PCs.

That's how you softmod your Wii without Twilight Princess. It's how I modded my Wii.

Also, I linked it instead of embedding it because the video description really is needed to do this.

Remember kiddies, Homebrewing voids your Wii warranty.

Yeah, I waited for my Wii's warranty to expire before I modded it. But this is a softmod, and is removable. Also, I have heard cases of Nintendo ignoring even modchips, and still fixing modded Wii's.
