I've never really owned gaming headset, or a surround sound speaker set. However I'm gonna get one of these to replace my 1990s speakers.

Both of these are around my budget what would you get?

I'm a headset person now, I only use a pair of speakers when others need to hear what I'm doing. They're great to bring along to LAN parties and such.

I'm the exact opposite. Waking the neighborhood up ftw. (Speakers)

headset is better for gaming tenfold. also that set you chose is crap (not bad but u can do better). sennheiser is the only way to roll.

I would pick the speakers, but only because I'm not a fan of headsets, especially when they aren't the X-Fi headphones. Also, USB audio = :gonk:

Speakers dude. You can get some headphones, but they'll never match having surround sound with a kicking bass. Go go!

I said headphones, but speakers are really nice to have.

Speakers, surround sound headsets don't seem to be that good in my experience

Werd. Sennheiser makes the best stuff. I'd stay away from that surround headset and get a set that's proven to work. :eng101:

Also the siberia is too fragile. Good, but fragile. :-3

I say go for the headset.

I use neither. I just pay my roommate to stand behind me while I play my games and he makes the sound effects for me.

It's really up to you. I use my speakers when I'm just hanging around listening to music, but when it comes to gaming, listening to music late at night or watching a movie/video/whatever, headphones are the way to go. For me, it isn't a quality compromise either way, since I've got nice Sennheiser RS130 headphones and Bose Video Roommate speakers.

Speakers. X-540 is an awesome set.

Speakers. I've got the X-540s and they are absolutely kickass if your software settings are optimized.

I use my headset for communicating with people during online games. Otherwise, I use the surround sound speakers for single-player gaming or multiplayer games that don't' use voice communications, such as halo. Speakers are much cooler for gaming, but will only help you stay alive if the sound coming from the side or rear speakers are loud enough. My bedroom has a good set of space and the sound reverberates off the walls so I prefer it over my headset.

THe X-540s are NOT crap. You could do better, yes, for another $100, but it's ridiculous to spend over $100 on speakers for your computer. You might as well hook it up to a real sound system upwards of that price. I got mine for $69.99 CAD on Boxing Day last year.

Does either require you to have a good sound card?

My motherboard supports 5.1 so that's not a problem.

Still a little unsure which to get. :|

Speakers ftw! A good set will always give you better sound than any headset, and the X-540 is a great set.Even with integrated, you can still get the directional sound. Hell, I do (using X-530s), and your motherboard has a newer integrated chip than mine.

Also, headsets get uncomfortable for extended periods of use, and aren't very good if you just want to settle down and listen to music while browsing/working, or for watching movies.

You obviously have never used a good headset...

While speakers deliver a more dynamic approach to hearing things, a good headset will give u better quality, directional sound (especially ingame), ability to hear more subtle noises and help retain your privacy. You can blare your headset and people in the other room can barely notice the noise. Some headsets can get uncomfortable, but that depends on what you get. :v:

And you've never tweaked a good speaker set. =|

I get great directional sound from my set, and I can hear all the little things that a 2.0 set would miss.

Also, it isn't private anymore when you start inadvertently shouting because you can't hear your own voice over the headset. :downs:.

If you have a good stereo/CD player/home theatre system laying around/near-by -- you can always wire it in... it'll be great sound on a budget.

Welp looks like I'm getting these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121014) just to have speakers that are not from the nineties when I need to use an ok set of speakers and also order a good Sennheiser headset.

Definitely could do worse. Good compromise.
