In the beginning of my spring semester this past year our teacher told us about the Skills USA technical skills competitions, more specifically the "3d animation and vizualisation" category, being an animation class. I thought whatever might as well, I've got nothing to lose. It was the generic "heres an audio clip you have 8 hours to recreate the visual side of the commercial from scratch using your 3d package." My partner and I took first at district and state and ended up 13th at nationals.
They gave us a professional licensed copy of Lightwave 9 for state

They don't make retail versions. You have to pirate this stuff to get it.

This seems like a really cool program - can anyone get involved with it? Or is it tied in with the school you go to?

HERE (http://www.filefront.com/14267491/2009_3D%20Visualization%20and%20Animation_Challeng e.PDF) is the prompt (small .pdf file)
My responsabilities were
-environment/lighting
-licorice creation/rigging/animation
My partner did the kid creation/animation/premiere work
lTCu1ldTFTI
I designed all the lighting to use radiosity, but had to turn it off due to an extremely limited render time, so it looks dark, along with no DOF, Motion Blur, and better AA. The timing was sloppy because it was done on-the-fly, so it has some weird camera-cuts. Overall, we were one of the two or so groups that even attempted character animation, however the rig on the kid was horrid, so animation was a real bitch and turned out like pure shit. This turned more into a "viz" project and less an "animation" project, which is fine since the judges were viz teachers :)

LMAO. that won? It's funny as hell XD wish there was sound. I lost and got 2nd place because people didn't think I made my video...*cough*assholes*cough*
Anyways, congrats. You wouldn't happen to have your competitions' video too? I wanna see all the others =P

Yes. That won. Surprising right? I wish I had the others, but they wouldn't release them for some reason.
I can do much much much better than that, but due to time constraints that was the result.

I would link my project, but my teacher put my name all over the video and title...I don't trust you guys with my name.:iamafag:
Wonder what it would look like if it was properly rendered to the maximum use of the lights you setup.
