Well, here is the cheapo way that I did today, that gave me no problems whatsoever.

Requirements

http://www.filefront.com/14255643/xBox%20Haks.rar
Xbox (Duh...)
A PC
Ability to download a 340mb Rar File
A rar Extractor
An IDE Port
Ability to open up your xbox.

First of all, what you do with this is up to you, and I take no responsibility for anything that occurs after you doing this.

No piracy discussion allowed, keep that to your other forums >:U.

WARNING:
There is a possibility that doing this would cause damage to you, your pc, or your xbox, or xbox hard drive, personally, I had no problems whatsoever doing this.
WARNING PT 2:
Before you do ANYTHING make a backup of the whole drive, or atleast Partion 3 & 4, (C, E in xbox terms)

Ok, here we go!

PC Prep:

Open up your pc, and have an IDE cable availiable for moving around when it is needed.

Xbox Prep:
Open up your xbox and expose the top (6 torx 10 screws need to be removed from on the bottom)

Do it:
Keep your xbox nearby your pc, and start it up with no disk in the drive.
This will launch to the microsoft dashboard and give you the green screen you normally would get.
Because you get that screen, your HDD is now unlocked and ready for modifying!

Quickly unplug your IDE cable in the xbox and plug it into the IDE cable in your pc.

Turn your PC on.

Launch xplorer360.exe
Click drive -> Open memcard/hdd

You can either create a full backup of the drive, or just make a backup of partition 3 and 4 by copying them to a designated place on your pc (4 is drive C and 3 is drive E)

Copy the files from the C folder to partition 4 (overwrite any files, it's ok you made a backup)

Copy the files from the E folder to partition 3.

Turn off the xbox

Plug the IDE wire back into the HDD from the xbox.

Start the xbox

If xbmc starts, it is a success, if not, you may have done something wrong.

PS. If you start up, and end up with an error, turn it off, and right as the microsoft logo shows up, unplug the IDE cable and restore the backup you made.

PPS. Files will be uploaded momentarily.

E: Files up, Go nuts guys!

Once I find an old PC with an IDE cable, I will try this. I have an old Xbox just sitting in my closet.

Something about yanking out an IDE cable while the drive is running sounds awfully dangerous.

Not that I have an Xbox 1 anyway D: .

EIDE/PATA has no provisions for being hot-swappable.

My original Xbox is a media center now, 120GB hard drive (I think), Xecuter 3 CE chip, Avalaunch and XBMC dashes, clear case mod, jewl light mod, custom jewl, internal ELWire lighting... It's pretty pimp. I'd hate to mod the way you're doing it in the OP, way to much stuff to go wrong with hot swapping IDE drives and hoping you get an unlocked drive. It's a lot easier to just use a mod chip and unlock the hard drive while it's plugged into your PC, there was a tool that let you unlock and relock your xbox HDD while it was connected to your PC but I've lost it. It was A LONG time ago.

Yea, I did the splinter cell/mech assault/007 Agent Under Fire trick too, tons easier/faster.

That app is XboxHDM.

Also, in order for it to work, you need to have it be powered by your xbox, and you to have your hddkey.

Hm. Because you brought this up, I'm switching Linux distros on my Xbox. I always despised the XDSL I had on it... And I broke it a few months ago.

No... You just plug it into your PC like a normal PC hard drive, and the tool I had was able to get you the hddkey.
