no but seriously if the hats whernt so ridiculously hard to come by we wouldnt have this shit in the first place.

every 4 hours and 20 minutes you roll for a 1/64 chance to get a hat?
then theres the one that you want to get, so add another what 1/21 chance of getting it?

Fucking ridiculous.
unlocks in a multiplayer game is super fucking gay, i thought you knew that valve >:U

?
in Modern Warfare, the point is to slowly introduce new players to all the crapload of different options and choices without overwhelming them.

Cortexian
September 1st, 2009, 09:57 PM
But most people just used the insta-55 hack so they can actually play well. :downs:

If it was a 50% chance you got one every 2 hours, I wouldn't mind so much and I think everyone would be happy. There's still so many hats that nobody is likely to get them all in a hurry (nobody with a life anyway vOv).

Bod I bet you're also mad that you can't has recon either!!

Bodzilla
September 2nd, 2009, 02:17 AM
halo 3 is 4 fagots.

no but seriously whats wrong without having to play for 200 hours to get a 50% chance of having 1 hat.

a hat thats purely for aesthetic reasons, that doesnt effect gameplay.... at all, or have any positive or negative inpact of the game.
If they where unlockable i wouldnt have a problem with it, but this random chance thing is fucking bullshit.

i have currently got 264.2 hours of gameplay on tf2, going by this system
divide that by 4.2 (the amount of hours per roll)
then divide it by 1.56 (the percentage chance of getting a hat per roll)
i'd have a 38% chance of having 1 hat.

after 264 hours.........
the entire thing is babies.

Bodzilla
September 2nd, 2009, 02:45 AM
also are we sure this effects idlers and not the other guys that just unlock them all at once?

Jelly

i'm really not wondering why people are idling, because this unlock system is just toal bullshit imo.

You can grind achievement milestones if you want weapons. Everyone's just idling for hats.

I think a hat should be awarded when a milestone is met, in addition to random drops.

Though the hatless Scout, Engineer, and Sniper would be special cases.

If your to lazy to open the link:

Over the next few days we'll be removing all TF2 items that were earned using external idling applications. We're going to adopt a zero tolerance policy for external applications used to manipulate the persistent item system. Due to us not having a policy in place prior to today, this time we're only removing the items earned through cheating the system. Going forward, if we find users using external applications, we'll remove all of their items. If you're interested, only about 4.5% of the players in TF2's community will be affected by this cleansing process.

Meanwhile, everyone who took the moral high road will soon be finding a new hat in their inventory. We've also significantly increased the chance of finding any of the existing hats.

We realize there is a high level of demand for items, and we're still working on systems to allow you to find them in new ways (via Trading, and crafting duplicates into desired items). However, we need to draw the line at running external applications.

Sucks for you guys. I on the other hand get a free hat!

I cheated, I cheated for no reason, I have no interest in hats or items, I cheated because I wanted to cheat, I deserve what happened to me, and I fully accept the responsibility that was bestowed upon me. I am just thankful Valve DIDN'T BAN MY ACCOUNT SINCE IT WAS CLEARLY WITHIN THEIR POWER TO DO SO as I did break the ToS by using third party software to manipulate the game to my advantage. Thank you Valve for not banning me.

How is it manipulation?

All the idler did was put you in an idling server set up by Drunken Fool. That's the same thing as opening TF2 and going in an achievement_idle server, except it uses less resources thus lowering my power bill and using less power. The idler was an economically and environmentally friendly program.

I think the whole point of this is, if you're going to fuck with the system, at least do it within hl2.exe and not an external app.

The hats are supposed to be a reward for dedicated players (yes I know the drop rate sucked that's not the point). In my eyes, idling on an achievement_idle server is borderline "cheating" as it is, if you're not even going to start up the damn game, I fail to see why you should get items.

But, in the end, it's just a fucking game and hats are a useless cosmetic. People need to shut the fuck up about them and forget they exist until they have one.

E: Not directly at you, but every time an anti-idle person criticizes an idler all they say is "WHO CARES IT'S JUST A HAT", but now you (and others) are going as far as to say that idlers are cheating because they randomly found an item in a server. It's ironic that you put a phrased the "oh so meaningless" hat as such a prestigious word as "achievement", when anti-idlers normally try to criticize and say that idlers are stressing out over something that is not worth anything. Imagine playtime as a currency.

4 hours and 20 minutes of play buys you a lottery ticket with the chance of winning a lovely shiny new (maybe) hat, and 25 minutes of play buys you a lottery ticket with a chance of getting a weapon drop.

Idle players receiving drops is almost certainly not what Valve planned to happen, although it's probably pretty difficult to design a suitable system to define when a player is idling.

Alternatively: pyro is a terrible class and anyone who plays it should never get a hat.

How doe's randomly winning a hat mean you earn it?
Usualy earning something involves you doing a specific thing to earn said item for instance you work to earn money, you do certain things ingames to earn achievements.
Winning something and earning are not the same.

Everyone here has said the longer you play more chances of winning hats.
You get 3/100 chance of winning a hat ever 4 and half hours.
Winning doe's not mean earning.
As i have said, how you earn something by it being given randomly.
With those odds you could win a hat within 4 and a half hours or you could spend 40 hours+ and still not get a single hat.

Ok let me make this clear for YOU. Getting a hat is like winning the lottery after finding a ticket on the floor. You did nothing to earn it, it merely fell into your hands. Idlers simply "walk around more" (in my example), thus have more of a chance of finding a winning lotto ticket (aka hat).

This has been going on for way too damn long. It seems I'll have to bring in the forbidden game.

In WoW, there are certain items that drop as low as 1% per boss kill. Most of these items are at the end of a raid, and raids can take hours upon hours to clear. Let's examine the Warglaive of Azzinoth, a weapon that drops from the final boss of the Black Temple 25-man raid. At a 1.8% drop rate, distributed among a possible 25 people who split the loot, has a 0.072% rate of 1 person obtaining the item per completed raid.

So, how do you get it? Play the damn game instead of bitching about the numbers. Like the hats, there is a possibility of never getting it, but that's for a reason: Rarity. If every schmuck grinder can get the most unique items, they would cease to be any type of status symbols. This applies to the hats. Whether you're new or not, the odds are the same for everyone, so if you really gave a fuck about the oh-so-special hats, you'd be patient rather than just expect the item just for being the imaginary pro everyone knows. If you don't play the game enough to get the hat, you don't deserve it. Simple as that. Realize that the hat is an indicator of time, not skill. The weapons would be that if they were to remove them from the random distributor (I still dunno why they're in that system at this point).

TL;DR: To those complaining that you have to play a lot to get the item: That's the fucking point.

That said, the key phrase in this system is "play the game more". Idling in any form does not count as playing. It's fucking idling. They're two different words for a reason.

Cheating in video games involves a player of a video game creating an advantage beyond the bounds of normal gameplay, usually to make the game easier. The hats are meant to be earned in normal gameplay. Idling, once again, is not normal gameplay. If you can't make the inference here, save yourself the trouble and format your C: drive to benefit all of us.

If Valve can figure out who used achievement_idle servers, they should apply the same rule to them. If they can't, then the least they can do is change the purpose of the halo. The two forms of idling are both cheating, but the program breaks the EULA, so the halo should only indicate that they didn't break contract, not that they didn't idle (which, for a lot of people, is an outright lie).

Please, before this becomes an even longer internets argument :lock:

1: What the item actually does is not the point. There are several epic quality items in the game that don't do a damn thing, just like the hats.

In fact, I shouldn't have used "most powerful item". That was wrong, and I apologize. I should have said "most unique". There are plenty of rare items that are pieces of shit when compared to other, more common gear. It's really just the collector's value that hardcore nerds get moist over, be it WoW or TF2.

A third-party app meant to unlock achievements without actually doing the criteria for them and get players items faster than someone getting them the intended way caused all players who used it to get their items taken away for a period of time.

A third-party app meant to idle in a server and get players hats faster than someone getting them the intended way caused all players who used it to get their items they gained with it taken away permanently.

Everyone crying about the lack of notice is too short-sighted or mentally handicapped to see that there was notice. About six months of it, in fact.

Polar, seeing as you seem to like, and are good at making long ass detailed post's please point out the dodo's of society how winning a lottery is dfferent to earning rewards.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/reward

2. a stimulus administered to an organism following a correct or desired response that increases the probability of occurrence of the response

Play the game, you may win a hat.

The hat isn't the reward, per se. The chance to get one is. By giving us the chance, players are encouraged to play more, and for longer. Thus, it is a reward.

You did something to earn the ticket; you played the game. Idle players, by definition, are not playing the game. People who are playing the game should get drops and idle players shouldn't, in a perfect world.

However, a system to detect idle players would probably be extremely difficult to design and would probably also add to TF2's already considerable bloat, not to mention it would create an arms race between Valve and idlers. It's entirely possible for maps to run scripts that simulate player activity and movement, and removing those may affect community maps and server plugins. There's no guaranteed way of finding people who are idling ingame, so Valve have decided "welp, might as well leave it."

(This is what I think to be that case, but it's by reading way too far in between the lines. This obviously can't be taken as fact; it's more a combination of speculation and common sense.)

But the one guaranteed way to find if a player is (or has been) idling is if they've been on DF's server. There's no way to interact with the game in that server (ex server) since the only way to connect to it is using steamstats, so they've removed all the items that the idle server gave out.

Seriously though, if I were to design the system it'd be a 5% chance every 50 points

removed the spoiler because we have at least 1 good idea in a cavalcade of shit that was this thread.

Technically, you get a chance at a hat for being in a server, not for playing the game. If Valve wants to they can release a patch that forces you to be moving around and shooting to get a chance to "earn" the hats. But as it stands you get hats for being in servers, not playing.

Trying to do what? Simply declaring that you win doesn't prove anything other than you obviously can't continue to debate with actual arguments.

Yeah so i've talked it over with several admins across a number of TF2 servers and we are making it official with our No Halos plugin.

Basically, this plugin takes your Steam ID and checks Source OP for your bacpack. If it detects the Cheater's Lament, the plugin warns you in-game that you have 5 minutes to delete the Halo. If you delete it, you're free to keep playing. If you don't delete it in the 5 minutes, you are automatically perma-banned from the server.

halo havers are literally scrubs. well, cya
