View Full Version : A strange HCE problem...

Hey all,
My roommate in college here was just wanting to get back into playing some HCE after getting his computer back from a hard-drive failure and it seems that now HCE will not run.
His OS is Vista Home Premium and he has been using the "Run as Administrator" selection under the right-click options but HCE will start and then at the screen where it just says HALO (not the UI, this is before the UI), it will just start flickering and stay like that. This happens only when starting up HCE though as HPC starts up fine.
Any ideas on what to do to fix this issue?
Thanks.

Turn off anti-aliasing or set it to application controlled.

Yes Heathen we did try that. It was the first thing that we tried to be honest. But thanks for the suggestion anyways. :)

I'm not very familiar with Vista, and I'm not sure if my friend will know how either, but how is that done chrisk?

You can't because Halo doesn't do Ant-Aliasing.
Is he using Open Sauce? Running in WinXP mode?

He isn't using Open Sauce. And I am not sure whether he is running in WinXP mode.... I doubt it though since he just boots up his computer, it goes through all the Vista routines, and then straight into his desktop.

Turn off anti-aliasing in your Nvidia or ATI control panel.
Trust me, this is why he can start Halo PC, but not Halo CE. Due to how the "fast shaders" work.

Have you tried manually updating haloCE to 1.08?

I have forced AA on before, and CE still ran fine. I forced everything on and to the max in the Nvidia control panel once just for the fuck of it...doesn't do anything. After reading that link it seems like it might be a good thing for him to try, but I've never had such a problem with it forced on.

Halo CE Loads but cannot see menu
Symptom:
You start Halo Custom Edition (CE) and it loads normally, you see the Halo animation hear the music but cannot see the menu items. Clicking around you can hear the menu activation beep/sound.
Cause:
Most new video drivers especially those for Vista now have the anti-aliasing set to ON as default. You need to turn off or set to application controlled the anti-aliasing setting in your video driver. Be sure you set it for the haloce.exe program and not just Halo (halo.exe). The Halo Custom Edition (CE) game has different video routines that use “fast shaders” to improve the visuals and those routines do not operate with anti-aliasing set to on in the video driver. The Halo PC retail version does not utilize the enhance graphic routines. That is why Halo PC works with anti-aliasing when Halo CE doesn't.
This is most likely the problem.
