You spawn as a random class with random weapons, scout can have a flamethrower and so on.. It's nice when you get an epic combination but something like a heavy+scattertgun is eh.
One tip though if you're a spy and have a weapon that isn't the butterfly knife using the melee weapon won't break your disguise and you can go to town on their team.
