For some reason, I am unable to do this, if I attempt to force it using the vidmode command, it doesn't work whatsoever
Does anyone have any suggestions on getting this to work?
E: Also, if I force it to do 1650x1050 at 120hz (-vidmode 1650,1050,120) it will flicker black and white, then exception

Can your monitor do 120hz? Only some can.

Maybe it just can't do it at that resolution. You should know that as resolution increases, the maximum refresh rate decreases. Does it work at 1366x768?

Protip, this is an lcd built for 120hz at 1650x1050
E: also, vidmode doesn't work at all for me, it gives me the same problem.

I don't get it. What's with people and playing games at insanely high resolutions? I have a 1280 x 800 screen and I play Halo at 640 x 480 (Because I lag when I use the scope at 800 x 600). What's the point of going above 1024 x 768?

its less pixely
and it is the native resolution of my monitor, and thus looks better.

For recording.

Protip: It's better to down size video and pictures than it is to upscale them.

It is alot less pixelated, but I play at 800 x 600 since in a really intense game, you don't pay attention to anything but the motion tracker and your crossfire.

No, I probably wouldn't. The highest I would ever go would probably be 1024 x 768. This is Halo, it's not like it's going to somehow look much better after that screen size.

you'll be surprise about the fact that it does get better. Try running a map like church. It looks more amazing as the resolution goes up. I just wished he had done something about the weapons.

You've never seen Halo on a good display, basically. Sorry to hear about that.

Pyong - Some ATI cards seem to have trouble with the 120Hz panels, but it's only a driver issue from what I last read about it. The issue has just come to light in some forums :-3

Are you able to run 120Hz on the desktop? Some can't even get the desktop to display without flickering...

By your logic you'd stop at 800x600, that's the res the xbox pulled.

More viewing area and it looks better if you play at your displays native resolution.

Here's what we mean:

This is what Halo looks like on one of my monitors, running at the native 1920x1200 resolution:

And here's a representation of what Halo looks like on one of my monitors when it's running at 640x480 and stretched to fit:

Never make me load a low resolution again

Obviously it will look less "pixely" but going that far is insane.
Plus it really depends on the size of the screen and not the screen resolution. I have a laptop screen so I barley notice it.

So you run a 22'' screen @ 640x480? :tinfoil:

Where did you get that number from?

The screen is 13 inches.

The box says 15.

I normally play at 5760x1200:
http://freelancer.modacity.net/pics/softth/HaloCE/SoftTH_HaloCE_002.jpg

If you can't imagine what 640x480 would look like if it was stretched to fit that, shit on your desk and then look at it. That would be the end result.

Did you measure it diagonally like you're supposed to with televisions and monitors? It probably is a 15.something" screen but you measured wrong.

Anyway, if you're gaming at a resolution lower than your screens native one, I feel sorry for you.

Uhh yeah actually, it does look a lot better at higher resolutions. It's especially true for Halo, since it doesn't have AA. The higher the resolution, the less obvious the jaggies are. Also, as already mentioned, playing a game fullscreen on an LCD at a resolution lower than it's native resolution will always look completely terrible.

You actually think 1680x1050 is an "insane" resolution? Sorry, but you're living in the past.

Tricky

I agree is 1680x1050 fast becoming the norm if not being being caught up quickly by 1920×1080 due to the uptake in HD. All the monitors I use at home and at work are minimum of 1680x1050.

I use 1920x1200 monitor but I usually play games at 4:3, so it's 1600x1200. I'd like to have a faster refresh rate, though. 60Hz feels a bit slow compared to 75Hz...
