Tried that at the same time I first tried Demigod at Fragapalooza 2009, we had a 50-100 people try both and then purchase the ones they preferred. Demigod was the clear victor since, as you said, Heroes of Newerth is simply a DotA clone. Also, Demigod worked, whereas 60% of the people at Fragapalooza couldn't play Heroes of Newerth because of the way it handled network connections and lack of LAN play.
