Or at least it won't be soon, for some of you
Link (http://www.edge-online.com/news/datel-disappointed-by-xbox-360-memory-unit-lock-out).
Third party peripheral firm Datel has said that Microsoft’s decision to lock out unlicensed memory cards on the Xbox 360 prevents customers from exercising their freedom of choice.
"When preview programme members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorised memory units will no longer work with the Xbox 360," Xbox Live's director of programming, Larry Hryb, said earlier this week. "If you continue to use an unauthorised memory unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games."
Datel, which make a range of Max Memory storage units for Xbox 360, isn’t happy with Microsoft’s decision.
"If the Major Nelson blog is to be taken at face value then we're disappointed to see that Microsoft are taking these steps to prevent customers from exercising their freedom of choice,” a company spokesperson told CVG (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=225782). “Everyone is looking for ways to make their cash go further at the moment and we believe that Max Memory offers a good value, high capacity, alternative to the official memory unit."
An official Xbox 360 Memory Unit (512MB) retails for £29.99 at Game, while a Datel Max Memory 2GB Memory Unit for Xbox 360 can be bought online for £7 less.
The upcoming Xbox 360 system update will introduce Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm functionality to Xbox Live, among other features.

I didn't even realise those things even existed, i guess the company should have tried getting a licence to sell those things to be honest.

You still have to the choice to walk away. Nobody is forcing you to own a 360 or for that matter use memory cards on it (my 20 GB HDD does just fine).

Back in the world of those who wish to own and use a 360: Some of us may wish to or retain 2GB of data at a time. You never know if/when your HDD will fault.

Then you can decide whether or not this is a big enough inconvenience for you to get off that platform. By your own free will, you are choosing to stay on that platform. It is neither necessary nor mandatory. Therefore, while it is a limitation on that platform, you can decide whether that limitation is either small enough that it doesn't inconvenience you enough to get off, or it is.
You choose to be on this forum, even though there are signature limitations. Those limitations aren't enough of an inconvenience to interfere with other activities which you might consider as the point of going to this forum (replying to threads, etc), otherwise if they were enough of an inconvenience, you wouldn't come here anymore. And as stated in the ToS (and if not there, I'm pretty sure it has been stated in one form or another), this forum isn't a democracy. Neither are console platforms.

This site dosnt exist purely for selling product for profit how ever.
And as such it should be the consumers who choose what features they want, it should also be a competition between the companies to gain as many consumers as possible not push them away by stupid moves such as limiting support to only "official" addons.
That would be like saying you cant use car wash made by a 3rd party and that you must pay the triple price offered by the manufacturer.

Wait, hold on hold on. Can I ask some stuff for clarification? There are a couple things I don't get: Are they just removing unauthorized forms of memory? It sounds like people use their PC hard drives as more than a simple addition. Could it still be used for backups? From what I've been told, the 360 hard drive is SATA, so you could easily just find a way to transfer data without the actual console.
Aside from the update, holy fuck that's a lot for no memory. Couldn't they have done 360-style USB flash drives and get a decent amount of money for that (especially without having to build on that shitty proprietary system)? I'm sure a lot of people would get one to avoid merging that data with their other junk.

They're referring to this (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360memoryunit512mb/) type of memory card, I don't think HDD's will be effected since they're currently firmware limited to 120GB's (you can't just swap in a 500GB laptop HDD).
There's a bunch of unauthorized third party's that have been making that kind of console flash memory for years, but not anymore for the Xbox 360!
Bottom line, play PC.
