Not sure if a thread has been made for this, but I couldn't find any.
Anyways I got an email from Microsoft offering a sweet deal to college students. You can purchase Windows 7 for $29.99. You pick either Windows 7 Home Premium 32 or 64 bit, or Windows 7 Professional 32 or 64 bit. Same price for all of it.
The only thing required is that you provide a valid .edu email address provided by the educational institute your enrolled in.
I know some of you receive discounts and sometimes free software through your college, but I thought this might be useful for the few who aren't so privileged.
The link is: http://windows7.digitalriver.com/store/mswpus/en_US/DisplayHomePage?resid=xoZNRQoBAiMAAGK1cnYAAAA6&rests=1258693615203
Note: It is $29.99 for the product key, and download of the Windows 7 OS, but for an additional $13 bucks you can have them send you the installation disks as well.
The offer expires on January 3rd, 2010.
Cheers

Yeah, it was buried pretty deep in tech talk:
http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18146
I should also point out two things:
1 copy per .edu. kind of obvious, but this was weird:
1 copy per credit card??? I think the address may have to be different as well, but if you're at college, you can always use your temporary address.
Saved around $180 with this deal.

So, does that mean I have to upgrade, or is that the OEM/retail version? Basically, can I do a new install from that disk?

It's not the retail version. It's kinda weird, the download isn't an ISO like you'd usually see.
Its an application. You never use a single CD/DVD in the installation.
You can do a clean install, but you have to have Vista or maybe XP installed first.

Well I can pay more to have an update disk sent to me, which is what I will do (as I want a disk).
Will it work then?

If I remember correctly from a while back, any key will work on any version be they different languages or 64bit/32bit/server, and etc. All that matters really is what install disk you use. Don't hold me to that, though. It was around when ACM was giving it away in their partnership with MSNDAA pre commercial release, so it may be vastly different now.

The disk they will send you is an Upgrade. You have to have a version of windows installed first.
If you ordered the disk just do a clean install from boot up

There's actually a way to make the download a bootable iso, you have to enter a command with cdimage.exe though.
But honestly, you could just buy the download, get the key, and get the OS however you want.
EDIT: Just made a batch file for those who want to make the download a bootable iso:

Just open with WinRAR and follow the directions.

To be honest, I really want a hard copy of it, I won't be able to download it anyways. Therefore only way to install will be a disk.
So, if I wanted to just buy a disk and clean install, I'd have to buy a full price retail copy?

No, you can download the copy and burn it using the jpg above, or you can buy the backup disk from them. Both can clean install.

No to go clean just boot up the compy with disk in the drive as long as another ver. of windows is installed.

The issue arises when you try to activate it though..
I may be able to fix it, using this method.

Any thoughts? Considering I will have to an extra $115 for the full price retail, I really wanna get this student discount.

Dear. Fucking. God.
If you have ANY copy of Windows, you can buy this deal. I went from 32 bit to 64 bit on 2 separate machines using clean installs.
Even if it's a fresh drive, you may as well install a previous version you have lying around and then install 7 (I bet even klange has an XP key lying around somewhere).

The way that win7 upgrades a 32-bit to 64-bit OS is as follows: Copy old install stuff to windows.old, wipe old install, poop out new install, so yes, it works.

Ah right fantastic, I have XP 32 bit, so if I have to, I'll install that, then upgrade. Although I might give that registry thing a go.
Thanks for advice guys.

Just to clear it up with everyone, the upgrade works as a fresh install as well. (OMG YES I know pretty crazy :iamafag:)
The process of doing this is fully legal, and supported by Microsoft. Follow the stairway of steps to happiness
Step 1: If you paid the extra $13, then awesome, skip the second step.
Step 2: If you downloaded the file, make an ISO and put it on a disk that can hold it (this option is up to you) or you can substitute with a flash drive if your BIOS supports boot from storage device.
Step 3: Back up all the files you want, if you feel the need to.
Step 4: After formatting your hard drive, put your disk in to your dvd drive, and install Windows 7 just like you would do with a Full Install cd.(yes it does do this)
Step 5: Now before you activate your copy of Windows 7, run the disk again, this time with Windows 7 booted as your OS. It will bring up a confirmation asking if you would like to upgrade to Windows 7; yes, you do. Go through the upgrade process of upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 7 (pretty awesome eh).
Step 6: After upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 7, you may now activate your upgrade version of Windows 7, with your upgrade only product key. Now because you "upgraded" to Windows 7, the upgrade only product key works to activate.
This whole process is called double install, and IS supported by Microsoft, and guaranteed to work every time. So have fun :downs:

Hah, double installing Windows 7 :D
If they support it, why did they even block using it as a clean install and put out a full retail one (as apposed to upgrade)?
Oh well, if it works, then fantastic :D
Thanks alot guys, gonna order mine later.

I'm not really sure. Maybe they figured the majority of the students buying this would rather upgrade? I thought it was pretty sweet that they offer double install for upgrade now, Windows is finally regaining ground after Vista :neckbeard:
