View Full Version : Another perspective on the MW2 rage.

While a CEO like Bobby Kotick may be individually rich, the idea that games developers are laughing all the way to the bank by ripping off poor consumers is a complete myth. Game development is not a particularly well-paying profession, and despite the high visibility of a few big-name developers, it's nowhere near the madness of Hollywood paying $20 million for a few months of a director's time. For every Modern Warfare 2 there is a DJ Hero - by all accounts a genuinely good game, and one whose developers no doubt worked just as hard to create. But MW2 has sold nearly 6 million units in a week, and DJ Hero, for the moment at least, has flopped. Those are the risks in this business. The millions Activision spent on DJ Hero will have to be absorbed from their MW2 profits (and, of course, its reliable World of Warcraft revenue stream). Activision has that luxury for the time being - few others do. But if we want other publishers to be able to continue to take risks on new IPs, we are going to have to start dialing back the hate for new payment models.

3 things:
1. Still have no clue why Activision and Blizzard merged, they don't need to be splitting that WoW money.
2. DJ Hero didn't get the mass hype that MW2 got, that should be no surprise at all. (In fact, the only time I ever heard about the game was from Game Damage's pilot.)
3. Can we please stop making these fucking Activision threads?

fun fact, game developing isnt that great pay.
being a PUBLISHER HOWEVER, WHOLE DIFFERENT STORY!
the percentage of money they get from a game over the DEVELOPER is REDICULOUS!

I remember when Activision was cool in 1998 with games like Battlezone, Dark Reign, and Asteroids. :saddowns:

Yeah, instead of discussing things that actually have relevance to everyones shared interest, lets have more threads about haruhi and birthdays!

Yeah, instead of discussing things that actually have relevance to everyones shared interest, lets have more threads about haruhi and birthdays! You said it bro, I am sooooooo sick of these birthday threads.
Games not being particularly well paying is news to me, and quite a shock/disappointment.
What is haruhi? Touhou? The teal? How did ross, and masterz get banned? I have soooooo many questions!

I remember when Activision was cool before they went apeshit with all their Guitar Hero spinoffs.
...and before they merged with Blizzard.
(I'm not just talking about their impact on MW2.)

-Haruhi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haruhi_Suzumiya) is a "light novel" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_novel) series turned anime that a bunch of people here (not me) like.
-Touhou (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touhou) is a series of 2d shooter games known for being very hard and having good music (and 2d fighter spinoffs).
-The teal is... yeah, pretty much a bad joke that ended with me temp-banning 5 people.
-Masterz was banned for being an ass to various people and staff members.
-Ross... idk what happened with him.
Pooky - I think he meant more along the lines of so many threads, not the discussion itself. I agree with you that it's better talking about something of substance than whatever crap we usually turn out... I'd prefer it being in fewer threads though. (This is what, 4 or 5 now about MW2?)

Robert Bowling confirms that Modern Warfare 2 on PC is outselling its predecessor in first week sales. (http://kotaku.com/5409738/modern-warfare-2-selling-just-fine-on-pc)
Welp, looks like the boycott didn't have its intended effect.

Wonder if these DLCs are going to be free or not, or if it's even coming to the PC version.

Theres something in mp people here might want to know about.
If you pull out a rocket launcher and hold down the semtex grenade trigger [only works with semtex] and then switch back to the rocket launcher when you die you blow up, makes one hell of a mess when you have danger close on and your running around with the javelin.
I just ended up running in circles chasing a guy after i did this 3 times, he was just about to shoot me realised who it was and shit himself and then ran off.
I really really hope they dont patch this as its fucking hillarious, guy chasing after someone with a javelin blows up when they get shot or stabbed.

And DICE is developing the MP portion
So we're getting two MP games from DICE next year and they're both based on modern warfare. Nice.
