Wow, you've got a good eye! I love your Photography 2 album. I'm interested in your post processing technique - you've made alot of your shots look like they were taken on film.

For the sepia ones I desaturated the image, overlayed a brown gradient, and then blended the original color picture on softlight.

Everything else was just messing around with colors and blend modes.

By overlaying a brown gradient I assume you mean a gradient map right? If so, I just tried this out and it works very well for giving digital shots a film look, thanks!

Yes, you can either do it with a gradient map or with a layer style.

Also liked these, nice and simple

They did add a button for it into the advanced editor, but they're too lazy to modify the templates to add it to the quick reply editor.

Look for this icon in the advanced editor: http://www.modacity.net/forums/images/editor/shot.gif

Also, if you want to upload anything directly to me, I can provide you with some FTP credentials to my local file server!

Took this while showing my camera to my grandma, who is getting an xsi soon. She goes all over the world for her birding group and she doesn't even have a point and shoot anymore.
http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/2136/img0395ib.jpg

She's also interested in macro photography, so i showed her what you can do with a telephoto lens:

I need a camera case, what would you guys recommend?
The one that I got in my kit is absolute shit.

I'm going to go to best buy tomorrow to check out the bag and then order this if its good.

My advice is to get a camera bag that doesn't scream to others "hey I'm a camera bag with expensive equipment inside, steal me!" I reccomend Crumpler bags, they look like messenger bags and are really really well made. I've taken mine through snowstorms and torrential rain and my camera has been kept perfectly dry. Also, because it isn't totally airtight, when using it in cold climates and going into warm buildings, water doesn't condense on the inside. I use one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Crumpler-MILLION-DOLLAR-Shoulder-Oatmeal/dp/B000W8ZDWA But they now have a newer design, that looks cooler.

Also, your photos are looking great! Try photographing some people too.

Timo
December 6th, 2009, 07:57 PM
Yeah i've got a crumpler bag similar to the one reaper linked (came with the camera's twin lens kit originally), it works great. Fits everything in nicely.

Futzy

I hadn't even thought about that, but ya you're right.
I guess I'll get this then:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TIQW4K/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=photo

What I liked about the other one though was that it came with a tripod for pretty much no extra cost.

Any recommendations for tripods?

Reaper Man
December 7th, 2009, 07:49 PM
I would recommend a tripod with a ball head, rather than the video-style one you would have gotten with that bag combo. Unfortunately, good tripods will set you back at least $100. I have a Chinese Benro tripod - it's a more affordable knock-off of fancier brands like Manfrotto and Slik. I also recommend having one with a removable center column so you can mount it upside down and get your camera real close to the ground.

Couldn't you just use one of those little cheap table tripods to get your camera close to the ground?

Yeah, if your camera is dinky and light, mine doubles as a bludgeoning tool. :realsmug:

Will see if my grandpa or my uncle has a tripod. My uncle is a professional photographer and my grandpa has an old film slr. Does anyone know if old 35 mm doublers and filters will work with an EOS? He has a bunch of those.

Also, what is the best way to compile an HDR shot?

Reaper Man
December 12th, 2009, 05:52 PM
What is a doubler? Do you mean a teleconverter?

Filters will work, as long as they're the right size.

For HDR photos, use a tripod, take a minimum of two (recommend 3 or more) shots of different exposure value (for example: one regular exposure one overexposure and one underexposure) and combine them either in Photoshop or Photomatix, the latter being the better.

Timo
December 12th, 2009, 07:07 PM
There'll be a setting in the menu somewhere called AEB (Auto-exposure Bracketing) that'll automatically take three photos for you, at different exposure levels. You can set it from +- 1/3 of a stop up to +- 2 iirc.

e:Or you can cheat and just grab three different exposure levels from a raw photo you've taken. It doesn't work as well as individual photos, but they still come out nice. I think all of king_nothing's HDR photos over at the HIV forums are mostly from the one photo. I could be wrong, though.

Futzy
December 12th, 2009, 07:24 PM
I know how to take them, I just need to know how to compile them.

Timo
December 12th, 2009, 07:33 PM
My bad, Photomatix is great for compiling HDR shots.

Reaper Man
December 12th, 2009, 08:46 PM
You don't need to make the fake raw exposures with Photomatix, just open a raw image within it, and it'll do the rest.

Futzy
December 12th, 2009, 08:55 PM
I can take the images with my camera, only need to set the multiple exposure and turn on continuous shooting and it does the rest. Just need a tripod. Thanks.

Do you know if there are any benefits to doing it either way?

Reaper Man
December 13th, 2009, 11:56 AM
Multiple exposures produce better results than pseudo-HDRs (as they're called) from raw images.

All of the features are quite handy, but what I don't like is how it opens every time it detects that I plug in something that has pictures on it. It's also unbearably slow.
It also doesn't have anything that camera raw doesn't, from what I found.

If it didn't have enough contrast, tweak it, there's no shame in minor editing like that, seeing as it's not only done digitally, but in the darkroom too.

You don't really need a darkroom to do that... Just an evenly lit surface and a tripod, set up as you have done. All the photos in my latest post in my photography thread were taken on a copy stand, with 2 lights at a 45 degree angle on each side.
