Note: I'm going to try and organize ALL of my images into spoilered sections in the first post, as well as link to their corresponding individual posts. My latest stuff will be at the end of this post and will link to the actual post where the images are located, older posts will be spoilered in this post and their original post to save on bandwidth!

I figured I should get this thread rolling due to the impending arrival of a DSLR in my hands... Here's a few shots I did in Canmore a few years ago with a point-and-shoot, edited in Photoshop to adjust levels, brightness/contrast, and color balance for a few...

Edit - I applied a warming filter to the image and played with it a little to make it look slightly better, hard to see the different unless they're side by side though:

Yea, the non-black and white cat (they're actually two diff kittys <3) is pretty damn big. He's actually larger than one of our neighbors dogs!

Edit:
As for the cash, I pay for all my computer hardware, though as previously admitted on this forum somewhere I loan of my parents sometimes if I don't have the money at the time. However this camera stuff was purchased as a Christmas gift for my father and I from my grandparents, mother, and myself (yes I helped pay for my own gift, lol). My dad doesn't know that he's got it yet so I have to keep it hidden from him until Christmas, this limits when I can use it so I don't think I'll get a lot of practice in before then.

Lots of incredibly boring photos, with the exception of the black and white shot of the cat. There's a difference between photography and just showing random snaps taken with your camera.

I might actually comment on your photos if I didn't have to wait for them to load fully. We get the same idea with something 800 pixels wide and something scaled to that size with shot tags.

Do you even consider reading posts? Waste of bandwitdh.

Your picture have no focal points...some stuff is cut off...you don't know where to focus on (last 2 ones).

Tbh my mom can do better pictures than that. :smith:

Jean-Luc

I was attempting to use it as foreground in that photo.
Ideally, for an image like that, I would make sure any brush in the "foreground" is removed entirely from the image. You're doing landscape photography in that, and the focus is not on the leaves of a nearby plant.

Now, I'm not a professional photographer myself, but take a look at these two photos I took while driving cross country.

NO BRUSH IN FOREGROUND:
http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/9798/1920x1200l.jpg
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/4100/crosscountry2009176.jpg

The nice thing about those two is that the focus is COMPLETELY on the landscape as a whole. Now take a look at what happens when you photograph a landscape and you get some brush way too close to the lens.

http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/6638/crosscountry2009161.jpg

You see how distracting that is? The foreground brush not only makes the scene look amateurish, but also takes away the sense of impressiveness from the landscape you're trying to capture.

I'm pretty sure I have to learn how to take good photos before I can take good photos. Looks like you came in here assuming that I was a photography god because I have a DSLR all of a sudden, wrong!

I need to learn how to use it first you dole. Posting what I can gets me critique that will help me take better photos in the long run, at this time I'm just posting the pictures that I think are above average compared to the rest.

Tbh my mom can do better pictures than that. :smith:
Not under these conditions, all the shots I took were taken between other trees or window ornaments. The second last image would of been focused properly on the tree ornament and bird feeder if the top edge of my deck wasn't just below the bottom edge of the image.

I was limited in those photos because I was shooting around objects.

It looks fine to me, not amateurish at all.

I see your point on the "grand scale" though, and when I get out to the mountains this summer I'll keep that in mind for landscape shots.

Edit - Here's an image that I grabbed just now, thought it might make a decent photo after walking past it a few times:

Cortexian
December 22nd, 2009, 04:08 PM
Well, statement still stands, I'm still learning.

Also, when they're resized from 4700+ wide down to 2000 wide and compressed a tiny bit they average around 1.2 Megabytes which is pretty small and loads fairly quickly.

Futzy
December 22nd, 2009, 04:15 PM
It's not any harder to type in 800 instead of 2000. You can even make an action to resize and save for you. And use save for web if you aren't already, those are some pretty big jpegs.
Just do it from now on and let's see better compositioned shots in the future?

Jean-Luc

1.2 Megabytes which is pretty small and loads fairly quickly.
lol :v:

Not all of us have fiber-optic internet. I'm on Comcast 20mbps download and it still takes 20-30 seconds before the page loads. Really, unless you're showing something hyperdetailed or providing a wallpaper version, there is no reason for the image to be so large.

Cortexian
December 22nd, 2009, 04:32 PM
I only get 7.5Mbps download and the 1.2MB images load in 2-3 seconds...

Either way, nothing pisses me off more than clicking on images expecting big resolutions and then getting something only slightly larger. I'm spoilering all the old stuff so it shouldn't matter anyways.

Spoilering doesn't protect from loading. A common Modacity missassumption.

I always though that by using the spoiler tags the content does not load. If I thought correctly, I always though that the "div?" which the content is contained in when the spoiler tag is used is always set to hidden in the style sheet, or in-line styling.

If it is set to hidden is should not load?

But still, your images should be saved to max 1000 pixels width, which is a good enough resolution to present your images. You can easily provide an external link to your full resolution images.

And ass MrBig said, when you use the save to web feature in photo shop you can see the outcome in a live preview and reduce the image size by adjusting the quality slide. Half the colours in most images cannot be detected by the human eye...

(Sorry if my post makes not sense at all, just got back from mates 18th party lmao).

Timo
December 22nd, 2009, 08:43 PM
Use a bit of jpeg compression too - I save my photos at 95 quality at 1680xwhatever. The size is normally around 500kb, and the resolution means most people can use it as their desktop. If people want a higher resolution copy they'll ask.

Having that branch sticking out in that photo Jean was talking about does look amateurish. It's like you just walking up to the river, pointed and shot the photo with out any thought. Sometimes a bit of stuff in the foreground can setup a shot like that quite well, but most of the time it detracts from the overall image.

Fair enough you need to learn to use your camera, but there's no need to be posting random snapshots. It'd be the same as posting doodles, boring doodles, or models of teapots (like a lot of people start out doing).

It seems to me you like to show off, with comments like "Oh yes" in the desktop thread and whatnot. Well then, I'm going to be blunt here - there is nothing, nothing whatsoever to show off in the photos that you have shown so far. It seems to me you post these photos to show off that you're using a 500D, you sure did post the unboxing. The 500D is an entry level DSLR. Get over it. I shoot on this semi-professional/professional level camera (http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/7641/225302692742d8e41a98.jpg), yet I don't go on and on about it, though I very well could. (Not a photo of my camera, same set up though.)

TL;DR:
You have to stop thinking about the gear, learn to use it and then worry about the image, not your image.

File>Save for Web and Devices
It will further compress it instead of just lowering quality.
But if you do this, remember to set it to preserve all EXIF data.

Working through all my cruise photos, this was just a panorama stitch I was able to do on one of the ship computers with Windows Live Photo Gallery (need a better panorama stitching program, please advise). I know some of the most recent discussion in this thread was about presentable file size, but this is supposed to be a gigantic panorama and I scaled it down to about half the original size.

All the color edits and adjustments and cropping and stuff were done in Windows Live Photo Gallery, didn't turn out half bad.

I was trying to capture all the people in that shot, and planned to come back just before the last tender to the ship to get an empty beach panorama but people weren't cooperating.

My parents took me along on the cruise, so we went on Holland America Line which is generally geared towards older folks... When I'm 21 and able to drink without having to steal a bottle of white rum daily in order to spike other drinks, I'll have to get some friends together, rent a penthouse (sleeps 6 and is only about $1,800 per person when split up) and go on Carnival or one of the lines more geared towards younger folks.

I went on a carnival cruise recently. It's not necessarily geared towards younger folks, but toward the whole family. There is a place for just about everyone and I enjoyed myself quite a bit. At least on Carnival (I dont know about other lines) there is a three hour behind the scenes tour you can go on if you're into that kid of stuff.

I did actually remove a guy from the beach panorama with all the people, basically:

Bet you didn't see that until I pointed it out, now you'll notice the blurring in the area that the guy used to be... No need for CS5! :allears:

Anyways, I made a gallery site with most of the photos I took and a lot of the photos my dad took (herp derp full auto mode DSLR photos). If you want to check it out it's located at cruisephotos.lancersedge.com (http://cruisephotos.lancersedge.com).

We chatted for awhile since there was no one in there except me and his assistant at the time, lol... Talked about Star Wars obviously and also Highlander since he did a lot of the prop work there as well.

I do believe that he's still working on certain projects, he was actively working on something that looked like concept art for some kind of creature when I was there... Should of snapped a photo.

From the Post your PC pics thread:

Gave my PC a good dust-out today with our air compressor, plugged in the halogen construction lamps my dad had in the garage and snapped some pics:

I know, the plastic bits need to be cleaned better... Hand and fingerprints all over the flat surfaces etc...
Looking for comments on the photography side of these pictures, how could I of improved the lighting I was using? Is the backdrop okay for this kind of stuff or would you of used something else? Etc...
