This has me baffled. Any ideas?

Chief Scientist Erik Tandberg, at the Norwegian Space Centre, said that he too was "totally amazed" by the spiral.
He agreed with many other experts that the spiral pattern could have been caused by a missile from Russia — something the Russian military have strongly denied.

Dr Tandberg said: "I agree with everyone in the science community that this light was the weirdest thing. I have never seen anything like this ever.

I don't see how a rocket can create a perfect spiral

Wow, very fascinating. I could imagine it being a rocket, but however, thats seems like it would be hard to pull off.

aliens? :haw:

So we throw aliens out the window, but now we have 'supposed' Russian ICBMs being launched?

All Russian missiles are ICBMs, true story!

My theory: An alien spaceship dropped out of FTL but was off course and came out in out planets atmosphere, hence the blue lights. They're faster than light travel technology probably manipulates light in some way and with the oxygen in the atmosphere, created the blue light (much like why our sky is blue). The yellow rings are the ship firing back up the FTL travel, which somehow bends and manipulates light so they can travel faster than it, the ship being the epicenter of the rings. Obviously once they realized they weren't where they were supposed to be, they got out as quickly as possible. The sudden burst at the end, with the rings disappearing was the actual jump into FTL.

Its definitely not some stupid rocket.

I hope that's sarcasm? The likelihood of it being alien is very slim.

The aliens are smart. They made it look like the Russians are behind this.

I like all the conspiracy theorists posting on the youtube videos.

But yeah, probably a missile. That simulation shows it perfectly. Whatever is leaking out must be very light, however, if it was to continue in an upward direction and form that large shape. For something leaking fuel or gases, its path looked very straight and controlled. I wonder if this was the point?

If that was true they would have a alien shape shift into a real life makarov and let him do his thing joker style.

But it isn't...sadly. It's actually what happens when my semen hits the upper atmosphere and decends back to the earth. Think about that the next time it rains.

Bet you'll wish the Alien Makarov :tinfoil: theory was true

SHOW'S OVER GUYS, NOTHING TO SEE HERE (http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http://www.nrk.no/nyheter/distrikt/troms_og_finnmark/1.6904061&sl=no&tl=en)

It was a test of a missile platform for dispersing nuclear warheads. Of course they didn't include the actual fucking warheads, they're not stupid. The missile malfunctioned and spiraled through the upper atmosphere throwing out unspent fuel in a spiral pattern that caught the sun from the other side of the planet.

Is anyone else scared this could have something to do with a coming nuclear war?

With the star wars program, the US designed interceptors to shoot down incoming Russian ICBMs, which makes their ICBMs useless, I read something a while ago about Russia threatening to shoot ICBMs at other countries (hostage style) unless we backed down with our Star Wars program.

Why else would they be testing new nuclear missile technology?

Why else would they be testing new nuclear missile technology? They've already completed one missile and are currently working on another that Russian officials claim can and will defeat any current U.S. Missile defense system.

People said the cold war was over...seems to just be running in the background if you ask me...

Russia has always been the firmest believer in the MAD doctrine (see Perimeter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Hand_%28nuclear_war%29)), and may see the missile defense program as a step towards the possibility of a 'successful' US first strike.
