Wow what the fuck, that really sucks. It does go to show that you should always organize and label stuff that you remove from its regular packaging!

She said on the table where he had been working police found about 100 grams of the suspected explosive, a powder that resembles citric acid but has yet to be identified.
"Anybody could have mixed them up," she said.

This happens also if you heat a jaw breaker too apparently, and bite down hard enough on it. It was on mythbusters.

No, that was only if there is extremely strong internal pressure from heating it up and melting the sugar.
This was an actual explosive that detonated under pressure. As soon as I saw the headline, I knew what had happened. It was probably Picric acid or something which is extremely sensitive to pressure and friction.

Poor kid, imagine being dead. Dipping gum in Citric Acid is something I want to try now, although I'm not sure how healthy that would be.

Poor kid, imagine living the rest of your life with that memory of you putting explosive gum in your mouth. Dipping gum in Citric Acid is something I want to try now, although I'm not sure how healthy that would be.
He doesn't have to live the rest of his life with that memory, cause his life is gone, like his jaw.
