View Full Version : The "What Scares the Crap Out of You?" Thread

That's right. What is everyone here afraid of? What freaks you out so terribly that it makes it hard to sleep at night?
YES, I know a thread similar to this was done before--but the last post was two years ago. I think it's time to revive this beast. And if a thread like this has been recently rolling around the forums, feel free to merge/edit/delete as needed.
To get the ball rolling, I will share some of my own little embarrassing fears.
WARNING:
My fears are completely irrational and stupid.
Now, I will be upfront: claymation has ALWAYS scared the crap out of me. And probably what started that fear was these commercial bumpers that would play in-between shows on ABC like Fudge:
fEfpSHnNHqE
The one where the people's heads roll off.... I had nightmares. For like, ages. SCARED ME SO BAD.
But THEN, to add insult to injury, when I was young I had a Berenstain Bears VHS tape. Well, in-between the theme song and the actual episodes the tape had commercial bumpers (I don't really know why). At the time, they were so absolutely horrifying, I avoided watching it. And when I did, I had to LEAVE THE ROOM during the bumpers. I have been looking for them for years now, and I never knew what they were called or where they came from. Well, a few months ago I actually did locate them.
The link doesn't have a way to embed the video, and all the versions on youtube are not adequate. So just click on the image I've provided to watch the bumpers that correspond.

I also hate insects and silence.
SO.... now the big question, Modacity:
What scares the crap out of YOU???

Insects that fly scare the shit out of me. You should see me near lady bugs.
Also, Hummingbirds scare me a little, even though not really that much anymore. It's because as a kid I was with some friends of mine, and a hummingbird was nearby. Not so bad, until the thing looked at us. We all ran away screaming because this thing had the most fucked up face of any bird I have every seen.

Everyone around me is terrified by tarantulas and snakes. I've been at a friends house before, as her tarantula climbed all over me doing what ever it pleased and I wasn't the slightest bit uncomfortable. I adore tarantulas and snakes.
What scares me? The possibility of having a future I never intended, that puts what I've done so far to waste and shame.
On another note, in the past 6 years I've become and extremely hateful and cynical person over what I've seen our species do. I have no faith for us. Humanity will burn for its ignorance and intolerance for itself, I will not pity us, for we deserve it...we always have.
What scares me? I scare me.

On to the topic at hand, I'd have to say I'm pretty good with most things. I don't have any phobias (I got over my fear of spiders a good while ago, though I still dislike most of them, but not much more so than other bugs) and not much ever puts me on edge, save for things that are intended to ('once you see it...' images, stuff in threads like this one, explicitly unexplained phenomenon, etc.), and that slight jumpiness usually passes quickly with a bit of dwelling on other thoughts.

I consider myself to have the standard fears of any typical person. The unknown, oppression, loss of control over something, complete helplessness...
Psychological-based horror scares the fuck out of me; I cannot complete Silent Hill 2 for this reason. I can play it to a point, and read about the story and what happens, but I simply cannot experience it.
Certain visuals can scare me too... it's hard to define exactly what about them, though, except that they're meant to be scary, yet fail to scare everyone around me, except me.
Oh, and heights. I'm acrophobic.
I also have a fear of closed-in, dark spaces. I'm not claustrophobic, and I have a mild fear of the dark, yes, but areas where I can't see and there's a possibility for something else to be lurking around, yet very close, no. No, no no.

Wasps. I'm trying to get over my fear of them since it goes way too far; borders on the irrational. I haven't been stung by one in over 16 years, but my Dad developed one of those allergies in his youth where insect stings cause anaphylaxis in seconds. I have no proof that I have that same allergy, but I'm fucking scared of finding out.
Bees don't bother me since they're fairly docile and could care less that I'm nearby. Wasps, on the other hand? I swear, second they know I'm there, they're looking for a fight. Electric fly swatters with fresh batteries are a major plus for me.

I actually have another, and it's the fear of large open spaces. Back where I used to live, there was a small forest behind our house. If you kept going for about a half a mile in, you'd reach an open field of just grass. Trees surrounded it on all sides, and it was about a quarter mile wide and 3\4 a mile long. It wasn't used for any crops or anything because nobody owned it. It was just so weird seeing it for the first time, and I suddenly grew a fear of any place that's like that.

I'm also afraid of falling. Fine with heights, but looking down a large drop makes me want to jump, which freaks me out.
Exactly this. This is the main fear/issue I have...whenever there's a large fall, whether it is lethal or not, I get this impulse to hop up and jump off it. I visualize myself doing it, then the result afterwards, and I stay a bit further from the edge than I had when I thought about it.
The weird thing is, It isn't the actual thought of falling that scares me. It's the fact that I would have thoughts to jump off something obviously deadly. I've parachuted before, and I loved it...but without one, I feel vulnerable and tend to stay away from edges altogether.

Lol Dee, I'd have a shit ton of fun with all those spiders and some flame :)
The only thing that really bugs me besides your common stuff (see p0lars comment) is very weird. For some reason if I turn the lights out in my basement and I head up the stairs, I get freaked out. It's like someone or something is behind me and it has hostile intentions... I either constantly look behind myself, walk up the stairs backwards, run up the stairs, or use the upstairs light switch to shut off the lights after I'm already up and looking down to make sure nothing is there...
I am not however, scared of the dark, or even the dark in my basement... For example, my computer is now in the basement and I'm down here most of the time with the lights off. The only light is coming from my PC, server, and monitors, yet when I get to the stares I still freak out if the lights are off and I'm going up.
I can't explain it.

Sounds amazing. I might have to look this up.
It's probably a textbook example of mainstream exploitation, but it's still the most disturbing shit ever committed to celluloid. I saw this when I was like ten years old, and to this day, over eight years later, I can think of few things that I've seen that can match or top this in the "this shit creeps me the hell out" factor.

Apparently, Lou Prichett is scared of Obama...
http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/youscareme.asp
Dear President Obama:
You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived
and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me.
You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you.
You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your
expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support.
You scare me because you did not spend the formative years
of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American.
You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll.
You scare me because you have never had military experience,
thus don't understand it at its core.
You scare me because you lack humility and 'class', always blaming others.
You scare me because for over half your life you have
aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail.
You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the 'blame America ' crowd and deliver this message abroad.
You scare me because you want to change America to a
European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector.
You scare me because you want to replace our health care
system with a government controlled one.
You scare me because you prefer 'wind mills' to responsibly
capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves.
You scare me because you want to kill the American
capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world.
You scare me because you have begun to use 'extortion'
tactics against certain banks and corporations.
You scare me because your own political party shrinks from
challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals.
You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even
consider opposing points of view from intelligent people.
You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both
omnipotent and omniscient.
You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do.
You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the
Limbaughs, Hannitys, O'Relllys and Becks who offer opposing,
conservative points of view.
You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing.
Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I
will probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter in 8 years.
I laughed a little :allears:

- Chucky? As in, Child's Play Chucky? He was no ventriloquist dummy, though I perfectly understand the hate of creepy dolls. Also, Night of the Living Dummy III was the best book out of that series. It was the most memorable Goosebumps book to me.
- I hated televisions after watching that movie. D: I didn't hate SAMARA, per se, but I hated the very end of the video that showed the well, and depending on how long you had been "cursed" a little more of her would come out of the well when you watched it. Sometimes nothing, sometimes hair and one hand, etc. When she actually came out of the well at the end I was pissing my pants. XD

ultama121
January 25th, 2010, 01:32 AM
I know you're awake + creepypasta yielded the story right away lol.
I've been lying down for hours now. It's 5:35AM and there's not much I can do. You know what the worst part about my situation is? I'm in the same room with my parents. They keep looking at me, and I can't help but look back and try not to cry or scream. Their eyes are focused on me and their mouths are wide open. There's the strong scent of blood and I feel so paralyzed with fear.
Here's the thing. The second I make any hint that I'm not asleep anymore, I'm completely fucked. I will die and there's nobody around to save me. I've been trying to think of a way out but the only idea I have is to rush for the door and run outside the front door and scream for help, hoping any neighbors hear me. It's risky, but if I stay here, I'll surely die. He's waiting for me to wake up and see his masterpiece.
You're probably wondering what's going on. I do get ahead of myself sometimes.
About three hours ago, I heard screaming from the other side of the house. I got up and went to check on the noise before realizing I had to use the restroom. Instead of doing the smart thing and investigating, I used the bathroom first. I could've gotten myself killed right then from my stupid actions. But I actually did my business and took a peek outside the bathroom. There was blood on the carpet. I got very worried and ran back to my room, hiding under my sheets like the pussy I was. I tried to convince myself to go back to sleep, that it was just some really vivid dream or something.
But I heard my bedroom door open. Like the terrified child I was, I peeked from under my blankets to see what was going on. I could see something dragging my dead parents into the room. It was not human, I can tell you that. It was hairless, with no eyes and no clothing. It walked like a caveman, with its back slouched as it dragged my parents. But this thing was much smarter than any caveman. It was aware of what it was doing.
It propped my dad up on the edge of my bed, and made him face me. It then sat my mother down in the chair and positioned her towards me as well. It then started rubbing its hands upon the walls, staining them with blood and then drew a circle with the devil's pentagram in it. This thing had made what it would probably call a masterpiece. To finish it off, it scribbled a message onto the wall that I could not read in the darkness.
It then positioned itself under my bed, waiting to strike.
The scariest thing is now, my eyes have adjusted to the darkness since then and I can read the message on the wall. I don't want to look at it, because it's terrifying to think about. But I feel I need to see, before I'm killed.
I peek at the creature's masterpiece.

These are pretty weird, I'll be the first to admit that.
Abduction by aliens (this is a leftover from childhood. i watched a LOT of x files episodes as a kid)
Being dizzy / having a lack of mental faculties. (met a woman once, she fell off of her roof, broke her back, and bled out one day during winter. an ambulance arrived after a neighbor saw her lying there. she was legally dead. apparently hypothermia bought her some time, but by the time she had recovered, she had lost most of her mental abilities. she had an MS and worked at the franklin institute.)
Loss of personal freedoms.
