I'm contemplating about either buying a used Mac laptop from somewhere (don't know yet) or building a desktop PC. My budget right now is around $300 atm. I want to get a Mac because i'm really starting to get into video editing, and I would like to edit on a Mac. Don't get me wrong, I like pc's a lot, but to me Macs feel better for editing. What I wanted to do first was build a PC, but the more I think about it, the more I need a laptop instead.

Ideas, comments, etc?

btw this isn't a flame mac thread, so please don't do so.

well, if you're going to be buying a mac, you'll be purchasing final cut pro. it's a fantastic piece of software. tons of options, easy to use, and very intuitive. lots of people use fcp, so, you're not in a minority here. you'll have lots of tutorials, and access to help.

on the other hand, a pc laptop is cheaper, has some pretty good programs that can be used for video editing (vegas) and you have a wide access to any other programs you usually use on your pc.

300$ for an Apple laptop? You're looking at like... a Powerbook G4 with that... not a good idea.

Yeah. Try raising your budget by five times and then we can start talking about Macbooks for video editing, used or not. That's the sad reality of it. Overpriced amazing products.

I personally just wish that the local small business computer store market was much larger than it is now. It was pretty prevalent where I live/have lived -- but apparently not in the USA. Real shame... it's almost NOT worth it to build it yourself here. Anything from a budget PC to a gamer elite machine... only slightly more expensive than Newegg... real person to go to if they fail (in your town, none-the-less)... largest build cost I've seen was 35$... most build free.

There's just little-to-no way to compete with that... apart from large businesses who want on-site support nationally/internationally.

What about something like a netbook?

For editing video? No... they can't usually even play back fullscreen flash video.

So i'm pretty much screwed if I can't raise my spending?

i actually missed that part of your op. but yeah, it's time to start looking for a pc. with that budget it'll still be tough, but you should be able to find something...
