China to restrict online gaming hours

Game operators given July 16 deadline
The Chinese Government has given online game operators until July 16 to implement software that severely restricts the amount of time children under-18 are allowed to play their games, according to the People's Daily (http://english.people.com.cn/200704/10/eng20070410_364977.html).
With the software installed, children will be able to play games in the normal way for up to three hours. During the following two hours, the amount of points they can earn will be halved.
After five hours, scores will be zeroed with no more points to earn. In addition, a warning will flash up every 15 minutes explaining that this is "unhealthy game time" and advising the player to rest.
It would seem that games companies seem to have little problem with the new regulations as most of their customers are adults. However, there is concern that one element of the new scheme could cause problems: the need for gamers to register their real names and identity card numbers in order to play.
"The system requires every online player to register with their real identity. This will scare away many adult and young users," BDA China chief analyst Liu Bin told People's Daily Online.
Companies will have their games shut down unless they fail to comply with the new rules by the July 16 deadline.

Yes, because we need under-18 year olds to play games for more than three hours at a time http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/CN3089/Emoticons/awesome.png

Thank god Hong Kong is an SAR (Special Adminstrative Region) of China and follows the "one country, two systems" policy, so I don't have to put up with this kind of bullshit.

Couldn't they just restart the game and get back on? Stupid law in any case.

Besides, I can imagine that would be a bitch to implement in a lot of games...

Yeah, but knowing the Chinese government, they'd do it no matter how hard and pointless it is.

Unless it is hard-coded deeply into the engine I don't see how it would be very hard for someone to simply write an app that tricks the timer since it seems this will just be tacked onto older gamers. I doubt any developer like Blizzard will go through with a complete engine rewrite when they could simply tack it on and be done with it.

Identity card numbers? I said how would they VERIFY, as in know its not just some adult vouching for some kid.

 I'd laff if Jack Thompson campaign'd registering with your SSN to play games. identity theft lulz.

So that means even adults need to use their ID card? What stops the son using his dad's ID?

Ah well, one of the joys of me being an adult, I dont get bullshited :D None of this "we need to protect people" crap.

Also isnt jack thompson campaigning for games to be rated by age and not like "M for maturity"? I dont see why america DOESNT use age as a restriction, works here in the UK.

It is age restricted, you have to be 17+ to buy M rated games :-3

So you instantly become mature at 17? IMO it should say "17+" on the damn box instead of just a meaningless letter.

Jack thompson was bitching just after the college shooting, saying they should make it an age limit, thats why I assumed it wasnt a set age.

Well, EBGames/Gamestop screens for people under 17 buying M-rated games, but Wallmart and Target sure as hell don't.

We have G (general, anyone can buy), G8+ (parent or guardian has to be present for an under-8), M15+ (recommended for 15+, don't know if it's actually restricted at all), MA15+ (parent or guardian for under-15s), and banned. :| Most shooters are rated MA.

Our ratings system is rather stupid though. All sorts of shit slips through while they're busy picking on minor things.

Our system is wierd too, first of all there's an icon for the age ( +3 ; +7 ; +12 ; +16 ; +18) then come a lot of icon about if there's badwords, violence, racism, fear, sexual content..etc in the game

Anyways, I dont have a problem with this. It's their choice. As a communist state, the government can make such decisions instead of parents.
