So recently I became interested in the idea of buying some solar panels (http://www.sunforceproducts.com/) (they're also on newegg) with associated parts. Why you ask? Because in the summer it can get pretty hot and bright out in Texas. What better thing to do than to take my Caliber out to a nearby field and play my guitar? Wouldn't really need to worry about disturbing the neighbors or other household residents/pets either.

Since I have an audio jack in my stereo system plus Bose speakers (with liftgate (http://www.motiontrends.com/2006/m01/dodge1/dodge_caliber_tailgate.jpg) speakers) so I wouldn't need to worry about powering an amp. I'd just need to power one or two effects pedals.

Anyone else here like capturing the sun's powers for their own biding?

When I live on my own I'll get some solar panels if possible. Sun is the biggest energy resource yet the most unused. GL Kornman!

a church near where i live has them installed on their roof. they produce enough for the church, and they sell the surplus to the electric company and donate the profits to the poor or some such other charitable organization.

Do buy them if youre moving to Washington. I havent seen the sun in 3 months

I'd love to have solar panels but here on the coast you can go months without seeing the sun. In addition, most places that sell them sell small panels that provide at most a couple dozen watts and they cost ridiculous amounts. I guess if you could make your own setup from all the necessary parts it'd be pretty cool, though. I'd be thrilled to have a solar system hooked up to some 12v car batteries so I could plug in my inverter and have mobile electricity. Plus, environment for the win!

EDIT: Just read the page. I think it'd be fucking awesome to have my stereo receiver and E70 speakers in the back of the truck and take it out some place and blast guitar/music. Though a solar panel that could run all that continuously would have to be fucking huge.

epic thoughts of someone smashing 'walk this way' by aerosmith in the middle of an open field

where do you live in Texas? In Austin, the only place I know of that have solar panels is my former middle school. You'd think we would see more solar powered buildings here in Texas.

@Lateksi: Do I need to link you to a picture of a galaxy? That's an even bigger power source if we could harness such power.

My point was that the sun's power can be easily used yet it's kind of unused :)

I have solar water heating back in Hong Kong, works like a charm. But we also have an electrical backup for the rainy season, when it's rarely sunny.

How much power can one panel make?

Depends on which one you get. You can array them too. I think the max output they (an array) can make is like...6000W? Info is on the website

So you would only need like... one to do everything you need... right?

Aren't the cells supposed to increase to 4% efficiency sometime soon? Right now they're at about 2%. If it's going to bump up soon i'd wait to buy.
