Well, not really. It's quite convinient actually, but I can't import my ase files from max 8 at all. I've tried simple spheres, and my stargate. It keeps crashing when importing to package and stuff. No error files, it just crash and i get the windows error send window. HALP. I'll see if i can get a screenshot, but there isn't an error message, it just crash. I can close stuff just fine, but the importer just crash. Crash. Crash. Crash!:gonk:

Okay.
Try and import this.

If it imports properly it means your exporting something wrong. If it crashes it means your UDK is fucked up. This ASE is one of the parts of harbinger for UT3 so it should work unless your editor is fucked.

I'll reinstall it and see if that fixes it.

Hi, i am having this problem.
I'm starting on a project in college in which we are building a game we designed last semester, and we chose UDK as our platform because it seems to have all that we need.. my problem is the following:
i am an experienced 3dsmax modeler/animator, and i am trying to get a custom character into udk, but it always crashes when i try.
I downloaded the ut3_male.max to start from, built a simple mesh on it just to try the export/import, i deleted the bip bones (left only the
b_* ones), and rigged the mesh on the bones using a skin modifier, so the contents of the scene is just all the b_* bones, and a mesh with skin and uvw_unwrap applied.
i exported into a psk using actorx, which successfully exports ok, and added a 1-frame base-pose (as an animation), and another little anim sequence
all this is just for my try-it-out-to-understand-how-it-works-phase (we started 2 days ago)
the problem is that when i get to udk, i access the content browser, click import, down on the left side of the screen, open the psk file, get the import dialog, i add it to Package_0, and leave the group field empty, click ok, and everything seems right.
udk doesn't crash after import, and i can navigate the Engine or the UTGame packages, and even open the built-in models
the problem is when i try to access my imported model
i click NewPackages (that's where i'll find Package_0), and udk just crashes without any kind of error. it simply goes away
i don't get to see the package contents or anything, it just freezes for 2 segs and dies
i tried importing the .ase model that Inferno suggested, into the same package, and it crashed right after the import was over
i have tried uninstalling UDK, run a registry cleanup app, and installed again, but it continues to do the same thing
anyone got suggestions? i know my computer is kind of old, and i get a "no shaders 3.0" warning when i run UDK, but i can run the game demo, and this computer will be mainly for 3dsmax animation, importing into the game and doing some scripting.
my settings are:
amd64 2.3ghz
asus a8n-sli se
4x 1Gb ram
ati radeon x550 256mb
windows server 2003 r2 x64 (you may question this, but it's by far the fastest and most stable windows version ever built, especially for intensive workflows and memory choking =)
i hope i got all the necessary info into the post
thanx for your time

Maybe the files are read only or your anti-virus is stopping it from writing the file? I've never had this problem so I don't really know whats going on.

the files (my files) are not read only, and i do not use antivirus
i might also add that i also tried importing a simple sphere, fron an FBX file, and the same happened. so i can't import neither skeletal meshes nor static meshes
i have an update in the problema
i installed a 2nd windows, version XP SP3 x86
fresh install, i installed drivers etc, and then udk (which installed vc++ redist and .net)
udk ran just fine, like in server2003, but the problem persisted, so i imported my model, and when i clicked on the package, it crashed
the only difference was that this time it popped up a windows error saying the program had crashed..
i also tried loading the model in a friend's laptop. he was running windows 7 (x86 i think), and had the same UDK version i have (march 2010)
the model loaded fine and we were able to visualize it and even play my anim
so could it be an OS problem? maybe udk doesn't like XP-generation OSs?
my next try is to install a copy of windows 7 and try it out. if it solves the problem, then it was just an OS incompatibility issue
if it doesn't, then i don't have a clue what it might be...
thanx for the attention and the suggestion

still another update
tried installing windows 7 x32
installed the same UDK, everything seemed ok, tried importing the same file, and it happened again: crash.
i copied the crash details and am posting it below

It must be a hardware problem. I'm guessing it's a 64bit thing (assuming AMD64 is 64 bit) or your graphics card is not powerful enough to run the game.
TiagoRibeiro

well, it shouldn't be a 64bit issue, because i tried it in both a winXP 32bit and a windows 7 32bit.. because the udk version is also 32bit. besides, epic teams all work on 64bit OS, because of the higher memory support, so it shouldn't have any problema with 64bit.
and although i point the strongest possibility to be some kind of graphics card compatibility, it also shouldn't, because i can run the game, the demos, and view all the built in models..it's probably something that udk is doing specifically when importing that probably crashes against the graphics card, and not necessarily a performance issue..

Well regardless. It has to be a hardware problem. The 64 bit thing was just a guess. Most programs don't support it properly.

UDK is 64-bit compatible******warning caveat below!
((The UDK is designed for 64-bit workstations. Lightmass creator is 64-bit. However, what the UDK outputs is all 32-bit. So no, not everything is 64-bit... but parts are, and everything is designed to run on 64-bit PCs.))
So if you have a 64-bit machine, you can run UDK no problem what-so-ever.
