thoughts on this, to me it just seems like a giant itouch that communicates with your computer. personally i use a bamboo 6wX4h tablet for my artistic needs but at least it uses a pen, apparently the ipad only uses fingers.

i guess if you rly like finger painting.:iamafag:

As far as I'm concern, it's not a fully functioning computer. It's basically an ipod touch blown up with several more features added to it.

HP's slate would be a much better choice. I don't think specs have been released on it, but it's got the full w7 OS, not just an enlarged winmobile screen.

First and foremost, it's Apple iPad. Not "Mac iPad."

I think that $630 is a bit much for what you get. Yes, there is a $500 version without 3G but at that point you might as well save yourself a few hundred bucks and go with an iTouch or iPhone.

People will buy this because it's got Apple written on it, but I don't see this thing revolutionizing the industry. Regardless of how much Steve Jobs hates netbooks for their disadvantages, I don't see a $630 tablet competing in the same category as a $300 Netbook that can do more or less the same thing.

What interests me the most is the CPU in this thing. Very power efficient for sure. My best guess is that Apple will update the rest of it's mobile lineup with these CPUs since they basically beat everything else on the market in terms of power usage. Hell, maybe one day we may see something like a Macbook Air with a beefed-up version of one of these in it.

Also, the cheap 3G is very attractive. My guess is that Apple demanded that AT&T either reduce the cost of its data plan or improve the quality of its service in busy areas. Hopefully this will be transitioned over to other non-Apple products, but I doubt that will happen in the short term.

Yeah, Apple blew it with their tablet. There was so much hype surrounding something that is not much better than a netbook (except its A4 CPU is capable of HD playback). So Jobs, you don't make netbooks do you? Yeah, that's what I thought. Go back to the fantastical land of Apple and Unicorns.

Community had better ideas for the iPad than what Apple could come up with, and most of them were perfectly feasible. If you want a touch tablet using OSX, get one of those custom TouchBook things, or whatever they are called.

E: Or hackintosh an HP Slate.

god, you guys can't see the advancements of this pad!

This thing uses the 90% of brain power as it's CPU. the 1GHz is just startup processing until it establish connection with your brain.

Use your brain to store data now, the 64GB is for the OS and temp files.

Screens are for other people, you actually see the images in your head.

It's big b/c it looks like a computer, but it's more than that.

sound is for display. You actually hear everything in your temperal lobe as the pad actually send electrical impulses through your hands to your brain simulating physical hearing.

USB is so last decade. Everything is wireless now.

Your eyes become the camera.

IDK why there's no SD card slot.

" for the PC card.

RJ45 and RJ11 are now useless because of wireless

Why would you need video output if everything you see is now in your head?

Headphones are useless for the sound reason.

This is totally innovative. It just proves the old computers are now useless, you are the computer now!

This is actually a great product as far as I'm concerned. While there are some disappointments in the OS, like the lack of multitasking and flash, it's nothing that can't be fixed with OS 4.0 or a jailbreak. Yes, it's a large iPod Touch, but when you take a step back, you begin to realize what that means. The Apps shown in the keynote which you can view on apple.com really show what this thing can do. The New York Times app isn't something that's been done before, the MLB app is pretty amazing and that's something that you can't really enjoy on a hand held. The iWork apps are pretty cool too, i's not dumbed down applications made to run on a touch screen, it's a desktop class app that is DESIGNED for a touchscreen. Once the Devs start rolling out other apps, you'll see what this thing can do. Apple was stupid for showing off the maps app and the upscaled iPhone apps. The only iPhone apps that you'll want to use on this are things such as games. Think of Scrabble on your iPhone, now upscaled on a 10" screen, or a racing game. Running iPod apps on this is a feature, it's not what it's for.

The specs on the other hand... the lack of USB ports is pretty weird, although it does work like a flash drive when plugged into a computer, so you can swap files in and out without iTunes. Even though it just has a 1GHZ processor, that doesn't really mean anything. The OS is designed around low end hardware made for portability, which is one of the advantages Apple has in it's products when compared to Windows and Android. It's like an Xbox, it doesn't need the latest and the greatest to perform well. The lack of webcam is a miss too, but I don't think anyone can consider that a deal breaker for this device. The A4 seems plenty fast from the videos I saw, and it's the reason behind the 10 hour battery life in this thing.

Now for the biggest complain, why the fuck doesn't this thing run a desktop OS. I was pretty bummed about this at first too, but then ask yourself, why do you need a desktop os? This isn't here to replace the laptop, it's not here to replace the desktop, it's not here to replace your phone or iPod. Unlike the iPod and the iPhone, this isn't something that's targeted to replace something in your life. The iPod was one of the best MP3 Players at it's time, it made the walkman and the tiny flash based players look like a joke. the iPhone showed what you could do with touch screens and the internet on a handheld. This thing, on the other hand, is for those of us who need something portable, but easier to work with than a phone and not as large as a laptop. My Macbook Pro is plenty fast and has a great display, along with a 7 hour battery. But I don't bring it to me to school. Why not? It's big, it's heavy, and in school all I ever do is browse the web and edit schoolwork. I have my iPhone, but I don't want to edit my schoolwork on it, and I don't want to use it for the web for extended amounts of time. the iPad is perfect for me. It's small, it's got better battery than any netbook, it can edit my schoolwork, I can do anything online but watch flash videos (which is fine by me, I got the appstore for games and I can put my own media on it at home). On top of that, I can have my textbooks on it, and buy them hopefully cheaper than I would if I bought actual ones. I can play games with my friends and check my email too, and who knows what other apps will bring. None of this requires a full version of OSX. Windows tablets have been using regular old windows for the last 10 years, and they haven't caught on. iPhone OS solves this problem. It's designed to be used with your fingers, it's designed to be simple for the tasks you need it, it's designed to be portable, and it's designed to interact in a way with your home computers so that relocating files is super easy and simple.

Keep watching the iPad, it's going to surprise you.

Well, seeing as Apple has a reputation for catering towards art-folks. It's pretty dumb that they don't include flash support, because I know that a lot of graphic designers and game designers and photographers that rely on flash to display their content on their websites.

As for use in classes, I doubt typing notes on that thing is very practical or anywhere near as fast as a traditional keyboard. Unless you want to lug around the keyboard attachment, it seems like a hassle to type on.

Case fixes the keyboard problem, and it's going to be able to translate handwriting into text in the firmware updates.

From what I've read, there is a number of reasons it doesn't have flash. One of them is the push to HTML5, another is that flash eats up battery, it's sloppily coded and eats up the CPU, and the last is that adobe and apple don't get along, Adobe doesn't like Apple for Final Cut Pro, and Apple doesn't like adobe for a reason I can't remember as of now.

Apple use to be an artsy and favored creative types, Windows can do the artsy stuff just as good now, Apple is really now targets the premium consumer market. I think artists prefer Mac because they are use to it now, and they like the elegant engineering, high quality displays, and it's more bitmap oriented UI than windows. Plus the stability is another plus, I can't tell you how many times my former team members lost content and work time due to some problem with Windows.

Specifically says so in the announcement specs. They may have changed it since then, but the ones reviewed on launch day did not have headphone jacks.

It definitely looks like a hole, but when I scale the image to actual size on my display it's at least a millimeter too wide to tightly fit a 1/8" audio line, which is uncharacteristic of Apple products in itself. I dunno, I could be totally wrong on the matter, I just know that the models Engadget, Gizmodo, etc. reviewed did not have dedicated headphone ports.

SIM card tray (Wi-Fi + 3G model only)

From http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/

It's seems somewhat cool, but I was hoping it would have a camera built in with it, flash video, and maybe even a word processing and powerpoint program to make it as functional as a labtop would be.

You don't have to be poor to know what to spend your cash on. :eng101:

3.5-mm stereo headphone jack.
Good to see they added it, still not really interested in the device.

How about them netbooks or a kindle? Like I said in my post, unlike the iPhone or iPod, this isn't a device for everyone.

Because it's only useful if you do a 100 dollar a month plan? And srsly. There are much more useful ways to spend your money.

Because other, cheaper, phones do the everything the iphone does and more? I have a ipod touch and a regular old cell phone. Why would I want to pay a shit ton extra a month to have them combined?

The app store is the only advantage the Iphone have. and if you have an itouch, it makes the iphone basicly useless except for phone functionality. There's many phones that have better specs than the iphone, just lack a large enough app store to compete with apple's app store.

The better question is, what need does anyone have for an iPhone?

Really, when it comes down to it, how much do you need from your phone? If it's business, Blackberry beats the iPhone every time. If you need something simple, you can get one for $30 and a cheap plan. I need nothing more from my phone than caller ID, a calendar, an alarm clock and a keyboard for texting.

I have no problem with those who own the phone and can afford the cost of the data plan, but there is no "gap" that the iPhone really fills. It's trendy (which is bullshit if you ask me), the multi-touch screen is the best out there and it has the biggest app store, but I promise that for most day-to-day users, all of that is unnecessary.

oh I'm not arguing against you
just stating that you yourself have a very fragile argument
I myself have one, but that's a matter of preference - I like having everything all in one, and I really like to be able to access the internet wherever I go. It's nice, and incredibly useful in all situations.
e: uh, Jean-Luc
1. BlackBerry's have pretty much always been terrible things in every way and everyone agrees on that fact (notice how businessmen have started shying away from them?)
2. it definitely fills a gap - the average user might not use all of the phone's apps to their full potential, but most teens do from what I've seen.

You're dead wrong. Blackberries require extensive private networks and databases, are not very advanced pieces of hardware, have an outdated operating system, and have been despised by businessmen since their inception. The reason they were (and are) so prevalent, is because there was nothing else available with the required features in the past: now every smart phone has the same - and better - features.

Fair enough, I'll concede that I'm misinformed about Blackberries.

As for Huero, I do see the popularity of the iPhone among teenagers but I'm at a loss as to what the gap it is filling actually IS.

If you're trole'in, please disregard the preceding

I'd rather drop the extra money in a savings account for my future and get a cheap ass phone that does what a phone is intended for-texting/calling.

Um. You kind of sound like you're saying you've used many android phones and have a lot of experience with them in this post.

There's only 2 android phones so far and If you have an iPhone I doubt you've had a droid or nexus 1 and just using a friends for a minute or two really isn't enough experience to say if it's bad or not.
