The D40 is a great starter DSLR. I've got one, and they're great for regular use, as well as for learning a few of the more intermediate aspects of using a digital SLR. Great deal. You'll definitely want a 55-200mm lens sometime soon, though.

I just mainly want to take landscapes, portraits, and pics of cars... I think the 18-55 will be fine.

Should be fine then, cars and portraits are no problem, might run into a few limitations with that lens on landscapes but it's doable from what I've heard and little experience I've had lately.

From my experience, the 55-350 or whatever telephoto lens you can get, along with an 18-55, is good for landscape photography. The zoom capabilities of the 18-55 are almost non-existent.

No so much worried about zooming in as much as I am about capturing the whole scene.

I never use the 70-300mm that came with my camera. I've normally got my 18-55mm on, or a 50mm prime. I'd def. recommend getting one, they're cheap as chips and are crisp as fucking shit.

^ was with the 50mm handheld in a fairly dimly lit garage. The canon 50mm f/1.8 was only around $170NZD, so I can't see a nikon one being over $100USD.
