Seems there's an open beta of a new Steam UI.

I'll post some screenies..

How to get the Beta UI: Open up the main Steam window. Click View and navigate to Settings. Under the accounts tab there will be a Beta Participation section with a drop-down box saying there is one new available beta participation. The rest is for you to find out.

So far what I've noticed is that the UI is quite a bit faster, or so it seems. There are new sounds for notifications, which seem very similar to a certain sound effect from StarCraft. It looks a lot nicer then the old Steam, though there were Skins available for it. Invitations from other players to be friends now also shows up in your friends list. Navigating the UI seems a lot smoother now, yet I haven't fully tampered with all of it yet.

Nice screencaps though. (Yeah, they need to change that thread title)

Also, note the lack of a mini games list. >:C

Reminds me of mac.
This is a bad thing.
Why not allow user created UIs?

Awesome. I love that it has the time. I was so at awe that that wasn't already included.

Bout time they make it better.

Also, plug-in support better be announced.

but I need a green and black skin back. Blue and black is breaking my balls.

This is sick. It's a lot snappier and I love the interface. I have yet to see what the in-game overlay looks like, though.

Do you mean skins or complete make-overs such as the new UI?

I posted a picture of the in-game overlay, though without anything open other then it itself.

Still no tabbed browsing :[

Bastinka
February 24th, 2010, 06:54 PM
Speaking of in-game browsing, so far my game has crashed twice now while attempting to use Steam's in-game web browser though it's only happened while playing Garrysmod.

I like it but I can't make my games list nice a small along my screen anymore... :(

Just one giant window.

edit: Actually using it now and I've lost some appreciation. It's like they have vb4 syndrome.

someone on the steam forums came up with this awesome chat window concept. I don't understand the choices behind valve's one...

I guess I really am the only one who thinks it sucks. :saddowns:

I like the move to WebKit, that is awesome. I like the style, that is awesome too. I just don't like the tab organisation and lack of mini games list.

I would love tabbed chats, tabbed browsing, and plug-in support.

Are these things being pushed on their forums? If not Ill go and raise hell.

What is this "mini games" list. I didn't know you could compact it down.

Con
February 24th, 2010, 11:02 PM
You can disable the images in the list view to get a more classic look, but it's still all very clunky.

I noticed the real web 2.0 feel with round buttons and gradients out the ass. I was expecting some glossy shine buttons.

Overall my favourite parts are the games menu and the ingame.

and for anyone who hates the message sound as much as I did, this is a good replacement

This.

@Heathen, if you don't like the sound you can simply turn it off.

This.

I just changed it.

what do you mean ?

Having plug-ins you can install for the ingame overlay. Say you want...idk...something different than what's stock. Download it and put it in your plug-ins folder.

tabs for chat windows are a huge pain. especially when you're talking to more than one person at a time in-game. =/ I wanna know what mah bros be sayin' when i'm typinz to some1 eltsa.

Also, I'm not liking the problem this Mr. Big is having.... :tinfoil:

Heathen
February 25th, 2010, 09:52 PM
Well tabs can usually detach. Its a huge pain to have to move windows out of the way or minimize them just to see someones convo, or who messaged you.

A few bitchy points:
- Chat logs?
- Steam icon looked nicer when it was plain black and white. Another victim of the gradient abuse, it seems...
- Steam forums still require a new browser? Weird how the Steam forums aren't easily accessible in Steam itself.

And one bitchy question: Can those background pictures (seen in library) for each game be used for mods/non-Steam programs?

Futzy

There's even games missing from my steam folder

delete everything from the steam folder except steam.exe and your steamapps folder, restart steam.

if that don't work send in a ticket.

just deleting the blob files and restarting should be OK

Wait...Mac has games?
Seeing as other sites like Direct2Drive and Gamersgate have a few Mac Games (although nowhere near as many as the Apple Store) Valve might be going into a relatively easy market. That could also drive up the number of Mac games (leaving linux guys like me in the dust >.<).

VALVe is also working on a Linux port of Steam and their games too. They had a job listing for it awhile back.

*Eagerly waits for klange's entrance*

But seriously, it's nice to see that they're moving to other OS's. Might even give me a reason to try Linux again.

I think I worded that wrong. I meant "Can custom games/mods have background pictures like that?"

I'm guessing it's still no, though. Boo. :saddowns:

There was also a news blurb on Tom's Hardware about VALVe not forgetting about Linux users, so I might be remembering that too.

Wow. You should at least be able to keep track of the date on your own.
