Remember guys, the series premiere of the Pacific is Sunday March 14th at 9PM EST on HBO and HBO Canada. For those who don't know what the Pacific is, it's a ten part WWII mini-series created by the producers of Band of Brothers (Hanks, Spielberg, Goetzman), but in the Pacific theater this time.

Be there!

I currently don't have HBO Canada. Have to get my dad to ditch his cricket channel for this haha.

Will this be bloody, realistic, etc.

I'd expect it to be more accurate to the history more than anything else. Band of Brothers tried to be realistic to the events that occurred, but the blending of people into others was done to save time and prevent unnecessary uses. Effects will probably be better looking than BoB, but harder to distinguish since it's going to be awesome anyways.

Another WW2 drama?

Is there something that sets this one apart from the dozens of other ones (besides its mini-series format)?

The pacing of the show could use a little work, and they could have spent a little more time telling us who the main characters actually were, but so far I like this show.

I bet that the Colonel's group is gonna get chewed up by the Japanese.

lolz, a decent way to end an episode.

I looked at imdb, and the characters only seem to be in 1 or 2 episodes. So with no previous knowledge on the show, I assume that the series does not follow a certain company. I like that, but I don't. I like it because it allows you to see a variety of perspectives. I don't like it because it doesn't allow character development to unfold. In Band of Brothers, you had 10 episodes to develop the characters and by the end, you had a pretty good feeling on each main character; their personalities; the histories; their hardships. It'll be interesting to see if The Pacific can pull that same kind of character development into the show. I personally would like to see that.

As for the first episode, I thought it was very interesting. Again comparing it to Band of Brothers, I felt like it was rushed a little bit. You got a general sense of the story leading up to it, and what American doesn't know the History of WWII (Main events), but the characters were kind of thrown in there. A few stood out and were followed but not like in Band of Brothers. I liked how the entire first episode of Band of Brothers was Easy Company training in Georgia. You got a good sense of the characters; who the leader was (Winters); the goof-balls (Malarkey, Guarnere, Roe); the serious business (Lipton); the drunk (Nixon). As for the show itself, at the beginning it felt more like a documentary more than an actual series or show. I know its a historical film and based off actual events, but it has to feel like a film.

Overall, so far, its all that I would have expected and can't wait for the next episode.

The series follows three characters, two of whom wrote books about the war. Pretty sure IMDB is just wrong.

Leckie (2nd Bat, 1st Marine Reg) : Part 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10

Sledge (3rd Bat, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Div): Part 4, 5, 8, 9, 10.

Basilone (1st Bat, 7th Marine) : Part 2, 3, 8.

Idk, about 15 minutes or so in. They were just traveling through the jungle and came across the beheaded and de-handed dudes and on the ground was the dudes head with the other guys penis (cut off) and hanging out his mouth...

I watched the first one (showed EP1 and EP2) and it was great. Kind of hard for me to watch, as my granddad was captured and tortured by the Japanese in the war they depict.

Part V

Part III or IV had a better sex scene imo.

Amit
April 16th, 2010, 10:40 PM
Sucks that there's no HBO GO in Canada. The sex scenes in Part III were bomb, but the beginning of Part IV was wild too. It was hard to enjoy because my dad was watching this episode with me :S

I find the episodes seem really short for some reason. Band of Brothers always felt like a decent length, but this series feels like they don't do much in each episode.

Down here in Australia where I live we've only seen up to the ep where Ack Ack dies (fuck you history doesn't need spoiler tags) and far as I'm concerned that exact scene should be mandatory viewing for every single person ever

ugh, this show is so inaccurate, a single soldier of the Glorious Japanese Empire can cut down swathes of those american marines with their cowardly guns, because up close, firearms are inferior to a shimmering katana

I said wtf when it happened Why didn't they show it to us? I liked the last episode, but many of the episodes felt like they were just wasting time. Seriously, an entire episode in Melbourne and another mainly for training troops and getting married?

Cortexian
May 17th, 2010, 07:08 PM
I really like how they ended the series, going into some detail on how the main characters continued to live their lives. Unfortunately I have to say that I enjoyed Band of Brothers slightly more than The Pacific, Band of Brothers focused more on a core group of individuals whereas The Pacific jumped back and forth between a few. I never felt like I knew the characters in The Pacific as well as I knew the ones in Band of Brothers, and for that I have to rate Band of Brothers higher. I'm willing to go all the way and say that I enjoyed Band of Brothers even more than Saving Private Ryan, the movie was good but the character development wasn't nearly as good... It's to bad Saving Private Ryan couldn't have been made into a mini-series as well, it would have been extremely good.

Cojafoji
May 17th, 2010, 07:34 PM
I think, where some of the characters were a blended personality in band of brothers, the pacific really showed a more complete image of the actual people who went through that nightmare, cracks and all.

it was pretty close from what I've heard, read. I talked to someone who read sledge's book and he said they did pretty good with him. I loved this show, last episode was great. I'd have to rate Band of Brothers' character development a little better, but i think this one did a much better job with showing the kind of emotional and mental trauma these guys went through. Both shows were amazing i think
