i took my xbox apart and took the cover off of my DVD drive because i was suddenly getting the open tray error. to get straight to the point, when i put a disk in, the laser shines red, moves up and down once, then theres a low buzzing noise. the disk never spins. it seems to me that the motor for the disk spinning thing is dead. the thing the disk spins on has some tension when you try to spin it.

does anyone know what the problem is here and what my options are? should i just buy a new drive or is there a way to fix this? my dvd drive is a hitachi.

if all else fails, ill just buy another hitachi drive from amazon.com or something and stick the circuit board from my current drive into it.

I've got a spare hitachi lying around, mind telling me what version of the hitachi you have is?

under model it says GDR-3120L

is there any way to fix this pos or should i just get a new one. also if i get a new one, will swapping the circuit boards work as long as their both hitachi?

It should work if they are the same version, what rom version?
Ifs its 47 I can get you an identical drive to what you have.

it may or may not, i'm not totally sure, you could connect it to your pc and spoof the firmware though.
If you'd like to take a crack at it and buy one off me, I'll sell it for 25$ shipped.

i tried spinning the disk manually. it seems like the motor is just having some trouble (probably dying). once i got the disk spinning, everything worked fine. i did that last night. today when i turned the xbox on, i touched the disk to spin it up, but as i touched it it spun up itself.

i tried playing a few games of mw2 off of the disk with the xbox open, but i was afraid the disk would fly off and decapitate my cat, so i downloaded the game to my hard drive. no problems thus far. something tells me that the motor wont last much longer though, so ill use this one until it dies.

i really appreciate your help and offer though. +reps to you kind sir

Alright, if its just the motor, you could probably find one with a dead laser on ebay and just replace the motor.
