View Full Version : Nvidia 3d: who's got it, who's tried it

I recently ran accross an article on nvidia's 3d software, and i was wondering if you guys have had any experience with it, its not as expensive as you'd think.

If you have a 8 series GPU or older, and a 120 hz monitor, all you need is the nvidia glass's and you've got adjustable depth 3d :D

anyone thought of doing this?

I would like to try it, but I can't be roused to buy/obtain the glasses.

I played World at War with it at Frys. It sucks, but not really.

thats like saying emu's are often seen travelling in packs, or 2's and 3's and sometime on their own.

You asked if anyones had experience. I had 4 minutes on a demo station at Frys. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't super cool story bro. Also, you look stupid with big sun glasses on while staring at a computer.

I have a 120hz monitor that supports 3d
but I use ati
:downs:
I got a spare Nvidia card, maybe something like the physx hack (which never worked for me!) will come along.

I thought you had to have a special monitor for that?

Anyway the only game I've come across that actively supported 3D was Avatar.

I played Avatar in 3d months ago. It was pretty cool, I loved how the in-game like hud items were in 3d and really popped out.

However, HUGE issue with the game, was with the 3d glasses on, it was imposssible to read the cutscene dialog text at bottom.

Games in the future are beginning to incorporate it, right now though there isnt that many on the market, and soon the prices of the displays will decrease.

I played... Metro 2033 with it the other day here at GDC. You need the glasses, a little sensor thingy, and the 120 hz monitor. The guy at the booth said that Unreal is fully integrating support for this technology, and there's a netbook out that comes with the whole setup for ye. They're going to be releasing an updated version of the netbook with the sensor built in soon, but... *shrug*

The glasses that I tried on were rather uncomfortable, but the actual experience itself seemed rather awesome. The depth of it all was rather awesome, and if the glasses were more comfortable then I wouldnt have minded wearing them at all for how much they added to the experience.

There's another system coming out or that is out though that the Cry Engine3 is supporting where you can just use those Real3D glasses you got from the theater from those 3D movies.... if you have the right TV/monitor of course.

3D TVs and such are going to boom real soon here... there's about 10 booths here (at GDC) that have stuff showing off 3D monitors and such (including stuff at Sony's booth) If you were to pair these 3D glasses with Playstation Move you could get some really interesting experiences I'm sure.

There are a lot of games which support 3D, but running them means half frame rates because each one needs to be rendered twice.

Had it back in ~2003 on my GeForce 2 MX. Never got it to work. Stupid ASUS drivers.

I think this method is better in some ways. I don't know a whole lot about it, but it doesn't seem that it requires a 120hz monitor.

Your head becomes a mouse because of a Wii Remote and an infrared tracker on you. You could still use nVidia Stereo 3D with that to make it pop out at you AND still use your head's position as an input device. They're not mutually exclusive.

All you need for head tracking are a webcam, some IR reflective tape, and the FreeTrack software...easy. That, combined with 3D, might make for some very interesting (and dizzying) experiences.

I really like the face tracking, but you will only see it happen in games, not movies.

The 3D monitors and TVs will be good for both games and movies, so you'll see games go 3D faster than they implement face tracking.

I wish they could make games with that, though. It would really be awesome to be able to lean left and right to see a little more of your scene.

Also, all this nVidia 3D stuff is dumb shit, and FUCK NVIDIA for charging $200 for this. This is ridiculously overpriced for technology that already exists. The glasses could be made with an extremely simple circuit and some special film that turns transparent when current passes through it. That just needs to be set to flicker at 120 Hz (same as the monitor) and you're set.

JUST GIVE ME A MONITOR CAPABLE OF POLARIZATION AND SCREW ALL OF THIS CRAP.

Edit: I've been looking for something I found a few years ago, and I finally found it.

Skip to 3:42. This is the premise behind the glasses.

^I'd expect to see that come out with Playstation Move, they have face tracking, and 3D games individually on the system as is... so I could see them bringing it all together too.

Also, there's face tracking in some NDSi app... or something like that... well not face tracking as much as just using the cameras to detect movement of the system so it knows how it's moving... so you have to move the system, rather than your head... but still. neat stuff.

Didn't we already have a 3D fad 10-15 years ago? Why is this still alive

Talkies? Ha! Like anybody will be watching those in ten years, silent movies are still the best there is!
