So I just finished planting a row of garlic, and I've got some other spices on the stove so to speak. Got some cilantro, basil and thyme that should be ready to plant (they're in the pot) by the end of the month.

I was just wondering if any of you guys plant your own stuff. There's such a difference between a meal made with fresh herbs and dried herbs.

My family has always grown a majority of our vegetables. They taste much better. Especially tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce.

My mother has a pretty awesome garden, considering that our yard gets much less than optimal sunlight, which has yielded numerous fruits and vegetables over the years - all kinds of herbs, any kind of tomato you could name, strawberries, blackberries (no blueberries or raspberries, though, but a couple of our friendly neighbors each have a large amount of one of the two, so we've never had the need to plant them), potatoes, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, even jalapeño and chilé peppers. And that's only at this house - back in California we had numerous fruit trees (plum, peach, pear, etc.), along with a great deal of everything else I've listed.

Even though I've helped with a lot of the planting and tending in the past, the only thing I've grown on my own are sugar-snap peas (one of the varieties where you can eat the pod as well) for a few years running, and will probably do so again this year.

We're building a greenhouse right now, 12x16, for this fall because we're not planting any store-bought hybrids this year, all heirlooms and we plan on saving the seeds. If we get a couple of nice days we're going to till and get the early stuff in if we can germinate in the greenhouse early enough. can't plant any corn though, racoons eat it all. i planted a few hundred of them couple years ago and the deer laid in it.

anyone can their own vegetables? i tried pickeling cukes last year, not bad -a bit salty, but crisp!

I've never canned anything, but I have jarred things before. Not quite as good, but it works. Though, there seems to be a higher rate of botulism if you fuck up. Is your greenhouse gonna have the plants elevated and off the ground sleepy, are you just popping up four walls and a roof?

If you're going with the latter, be sure to dig down 3-4 feet and put down chicken wire on the bottom and sides. Keeps fucking gophers out.

edit: also, that's an understandable mistake paladin, especially with your anal condition. i kid, i kid.

I was just talking about the herpes... But no, I never got into halo's modding scene (producing/caring), so I don't know who he is.

canning is jarring, it's just called canning. i don't know why it makes no sense. You do have to be careful especially when you use a hot water bath. we have a pressure cooker to seal the jars but i did the cukes in a pot of boiling water. I haven't had a single seal pop since i canned them last year.

The greenhouse will have workbenches in it to keep the sprouts off the ground but everything will be transplanted into the garden when the ground is warm enough. It's pretty simple construction, all 2" PVC (sch 40), with a lightweight greenhouse mesh instead of glass/plexi (it's like a big tent). we have some high winds so there will be some framing to do but other than that it's ten times cheaper than traditional greenhouse construction and it's portable

we don't have gophers but rabbits and groundhogs are a problem. we have .22 for them.

ahh, hands are all busted and sore, back aches ....finally got the first bit of work done in the garden this year.

frame for the green house is up and we did some 'chinese-double-dig' on the new parts of the garden...we pretty much doubled it in size.

i'll have to get some pics of the green house.
