(April 15) -- Video taken by an Iowa sheriff's cruiser shows it clearly: A fireball believed to have been a large meteor streaked across the Midwestern sky, prompting hundreds of calls to the National Weather Service from stargazers in at least four states.

Images captured by a webcam at the University of Wisconsin at Madison (http://www.aos.wisc.edu/fireball/2010_04_14_fireball_loop_1024x768_long.gif) show what appears to be a meteor illuminating the northern sky and shooting eastward around 10 p.m. CDT Wednesday.

There has been no official determination of what caused the fireball. In a statement on its Web site, the weather service (http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=dvn&storyid=50881&source=0) said "a fireball or very bright meteor was observed streaking across the sky" in Northern Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Southern WisconsinThe fireball as seen by the University of Wisconsin's webcam:

And if you're too lazy to check out the article, here's the view from the policeman's dashcam:

If you see a bright flash, all you have to do is duck and cover!

edit: looks like it took enough friction too cause some sparks. i don't think it's unreasonable that the thing was pretty small and just arcing as it was plowing through those clowds.

You don't even know how hard this made me laugh on the inside. We just learned about this in history. Oh deceptive gov't attempts at teaching the nation.

I dunno, I think you'd probably see a pretty good increase of survivors around the perimeter of the nuclear blast. So there's a little merit to the commercials. LOL nukes.

If you are near a nuclear blast when it goes off, duck and cover or not, you're gonna die.

Me too, but if I did, I'd probably pee myself.

Actually no, if you're far enough away that you're not vaporized and the shock wave is your main concern then duck and cover could save your life

but if it's not turrists doing the bombing then there's probably more coming and then yeah you're pretty fucked :)

Saw something exactly like that when were were driving home from hunting a couple years ago, was pretty cool to see in person. That dash-cam doesn't do it justice at ALL.

Nothing we can do about it now. I am sure of one thing though: I'll be spending a good amount of time roaming the web looking for more videos like this.

If it was truly a small asteroid then I think we may have more on the way. A larger asteroid that perhaps broke into chunks and all that~.
