There's a guy who eats and digests metal. Look that up. I think he ate a whole plane once (over a period of time).

All three times my mom was pregnant (me and my brothers) she craved chalk. She was a rock climber, so she would grab blocks of uncrumbled climbing chalk out of her bag and just munch on them. Apparently pregnancy cravings have to do with the nutrients the body is lacking, so apparently she needed calcium or some such. :P
e: at one time she even went for some hard white sidewalk chalk. It made my teeth hurt watching her chew on that stuff.

I used to eat lead. Not pencil lead, like poisonous metal lead. Whether it was lead solder or even car tire balancing weights, I would eat them. I don't think it had any side affects, as my nervous system isn't completely destroyed... but lol at my rep so it might have done something.

I used to lick my legos to see if there was some kind of tasty things in them. Ofc, that was 10+ years ago.

What about those African tribes who drink cow blood and eat chalk? I think there's people in Tibet who do something similar only they drink a lot of tea and iirc one of the women lived to be 140yro.

Here's something interesting I listened to a while ago: How Cooking Made Us Human (~45min) (http://www.onpointradio.org/2009/06/cooking-and-human-evolution). I don't know if it will help but if Evolution and Anthropology are relevant to your paper then it definitely will be.

There's this strange disorder where people like to eat inanimate objects. I saw it on 1000 ways to die, this guy liked to eat coins, and he died, and its because his intestines got clogged with pennies, and other metal objects. And it eventually poked through the intestines causing him to die from internally bleeding.

Remember in elementary when all the kids used to chew paper like gum because they thought it was cool? At least they did in my school...
