Could always be some touch up of the photo. I know I always do some small adjustments to any of my photos using Photoshop.

Expected release date: Dec 22nd, 2012.

The photo was taken with a camera, plus it was cropped as well. Still could easily be a fake. We'll know come June 14th at, presumably, E3.

Warsaw
June 4th, 2010, 10:25 PM
They are still making the game, it just won't be their focus at E3. It already got some pretty massive coverage in Game Informer anyways, so as long as this surprise isn't L4D 3, TF3, or Counter-Strike I will be happy.

Inferno

TF3 is basically going to be TF2 when the engineer update comes out. They've made enough changes to call it a "new game" anyways.

While it's not on their main site... it wouldn't surprise me. Take Two pissed off 3D Realms when apparently 3DR said Take Two tried to pawn DNF off on another large developer (rumours were Gearbox). The deal might have actually been accomplished.

Not sure what I think about a Duke game NOT by 3DR... but by Valve instead... maybe a step up.

On the 3DR site and several others the stories completely different.
George went to T2 to for a final payment to complete DNF and T2 said they would only agree if they took hold of the franchise and all code related to it.

I was excited about DNF like four years ago. Now, I don't really give a shit. I'll play it and probably love it if it comes out, but I'm not holding my breath or anything. Portal 2, on the other hand, has me very excited. And HL2ep3 (or HL3 as the case may be) is something that I am absolutely dying to have.
For that reason, if Valve is further postponing both of those games in order to resurrect something I stopped caring about years ago, I will be royally pissed. Not that I feel I am entitled to have my whims served by Valve, but seriously, what a middle finger to fans of the series.

I'm not judging yet, I'm just saying, if that proves to be the case, my wrath will be... vocal.

Whatever comes out should be called, "Half-Life 3". At this point, releasing an "Episode" 3 would just be opening themselves up to ridicule. They did 2 episodes, which is more than one, which satisfies the plurality of the "episodic" concept. Time to move on.

How can Portal 2 be the surprise? There's nothing at all surprising about it.

So far there's been nothing at all surprising about E3 in general. I remember some years ago I used to get excited to see the new stuff at E3. Could be I'm just older and more mature, but it really does feel like the industry hasn't had anything new to offer in quite a while. It really doesn't. Oh boy yet ANOTHER DS type with a novelty function that won't help it get better games. How about Nintendo just sucks it up and releases the DS 2 with some real controls and the 3D tossed in as a bonus?

Actually, same goes for Sony, too. PSP, PSP2000, PSP3000, PSP Go....what the fuck? "We don't want to add another analog stick because it breaks continuity." Really now? That's exactly the kind of asinine thinking that is costing you sales, Sony.

As for Steam on PS3: cross-platform multiplayer would be the most awesome thing to happen in awhile.

For all the 3DS nay-sayers:
I don't know about you, but something with Avatar-style 3D technology without the need for special glasses seems like a major breakthrough to me. Sure, the graphics may be on par with the old Gamecube rather than the 360 or PS3, but the 3DS is revolutionary just for that reason.
Hopefully the release date is soon, I need to upgrade from my old first-gen DS, and it seems silly to buy the DSi when the 3DS is around the corner.

You don't like challenges or thinking on your feet eh pyro girl?

:realsmug:

Don't get me wrong, I am excited for the continuation of the storyline. I love GladOS and how creepy she is and I look forward to more chilling dialogue. To me, it seems like Valve just threw a huge list of shit together like, "HEY, why don't we have lava and spiky squishy things and oil slicks and trampolines." and to me it just feels cluttered and overcomplicated. I loved Portal because of its simplicity of design. It was you and the portal gun and that was essentially it. And this just seems like they're trying too hard to make this game "EXTREME."

Watching the trailer made me think of Sonic the Hedgehog.... like are your feet ever really supposed to touch the ground? Are you ever really supposed to STOP moving? :P There's so much bouncing and flying through the air that it doesn't leave a lot of room for thinking the puzzles through.

I'm intending to buy Portal 2, whether or not I'll play it from start to finish is another matter.

Rob Oplawar
June 16th, 2010, 07:13 PM
Well, there's only so far you can go with "you're in a room but the exit is blocked unless you can distort normal geometry" puzzles. I'm very glad that they're adding more to the game.

And it's Valve; it's completely assured that every single mechanic they employ will have a long introduction on its use.
Hell, that's how Portal was. Every other puzzle was mechanics from previous puzzles with a new mechanic applied. In order for Portal 2 to be the continuation of that, by definition it needs to employ new mechanics, like spiky squishy things and oil slicks.

SiriusTexra
June 16th, 2010, 07:31 PM
They are showing the games new features. Do you want to see video of footage, of walking around, and walking through portals? No, so what your seeing, are the new features.

Portal 1 was your training session. Portal 2 looks to be the real deal this time. Putting the shit to the test.

Hating on a game because it looks to be too hard for you is a real cunt move. A. Real. Cunt. Move. The kind of move that is exactly the thought process behind why games design is dying for the most part. Casual. Approachable. Simple. "DESIGN".

You need to have light, and shade. Portal 1 and Portal 2 in comparison are a perfect ying and yang. You felt clean and tidy in portal. Then all of a sudden, you get thrust into the rusty unpredictable underbelly.

The new one, is your whole perfect little world being unpredictable, yet controlled, and nature intruding on what was once unnatural.

"simplicity of design."

Oh i see. Your one of those.

There is a time and a place. If everything were "Apple" white and round, that not design, that's bland. You need the full spectrum of angles at your disposal. Not just rehashing what once was so you can hear some fucking dialogue some more.

They made the first portal "simple in design" because it fit with the COLD STERILE environment. That, and like it or not, it was a hardware performance decision. Less to render, portals are hard to render.

Point being, design does not always equal simplicity. The moment society realises that, real designers can return to doing real design.

Valve don't "throw shit together". Thinking in this light just takes a big wrecking ball to who valve are and what they've done for us, and what they continue to do for us. They haven't made an even slightly shit game yet. You, behind a screen think you know what the fuck is what.

Perhaps you didn't see the part where I said I was excited about the game because of the continuation of the storyline, and that I fully intend to purchase the game upon release. I am eager to play it for the merits of the story and the visuals. Whether or not the game is "too hard" remains to be seen. Game's not coming out for another year.

:P There's so much bouncing and flying through the air that it doesn't leave a lot of room for thinking the puzzles through.

by the way, the story behind the "paint" in portal 2 is that valve hired another team of digipen grads that worked on a game (https://www.digipen.edu/studentprojects/tag/) that had that as its major gameplay point, and I guess the Portal series is where they stick all their digipen hires :golfclap:

I'm intending to buy Portal 2, whether or not I'll play it from start to finish is another matter.

The point of portal is that you ideally solve the puzzle with your mind before you execute it. Some chambres are actually broken into several puzzles even in the first Portal. You observe, calculate, and draft a plan, then execute it. If the puzzle requires you to make new portals on the fly, then you should already know that ahead of time. I don't think Valve will make a game as ridiculous as Portal: Prelude was.

tl;dr: there is plenty of time for thinking through the puzzle.

Portal: Prelude was :gonk: from start to finish. But in a good way.

Took me ages to figure out some of those puzzles.

The first few levels of Prelude are twice as hard as the last level of Portal.

You have to really like puzzles.

I beat it, but it was a straight up bitch. Literally, it took me all day to beat it. From 9 in the morning to around midnight.

Glad I have that sense of accomplishment, but good god I'm not playing it EVER AGAIN.

I agree, Prelude was too hard. The trouble was that the tricky parts were more about pushing your motion ability to the limit and less about solving puzzles. It had some really good puzzles in it, but the parts where you had to place several portals in a row while flying through the air ended up ruining the experience for me.

Also, God dammit Dane, please don't be on my side. Ever. I just...
You know what, you're going on my ignore list. *wipes hands*

Welp. I guess not everyone can combo portals so easily. I love those parts where you have to combo 4 or 5 portals to do a huge jump. The only part of Prelude I REALLY hated was the tiny room with a ton of sentries.

The paint? Each colour has a different effect. Orange makes you move really fast, blue makes you bounce, and I don't know what the other colours do.

If you still think it's getting 'too hard' though, think of it this way: the more new features, the more ways to beat each puzzle depending on how good your own individual skills are.

Really now, go watch a Portal 1 speedrun and just see all the wacky ways the people beat the level, completely different from what Valve probably had intended.

Valve plans to have cross-platform co-op between PS3 and PC/Mac for Portal 2

Because it would increase the size of the potential player pool? It'd be fun to play coop with a friend who owns a PS3?

Look, I do 90% of my gaming on the PC, but that doesn't mean I can't look forward to playing with people on drastically different hardware. I like a bigger and more varied community, why wouldn't you? :raise:

Actually, I haven't seen these particular videos yet (Not in their entirety, all I've seen are clips from these), so much obliged. :)

ALSO, I think Wheatley is my new favourite character. He's super-adorable. More adorable than companion cube. By far. I loved the whole "We need a password, but it's fine, we can just hack it. Okay.... eight, eight, eight, eight, eight.... EIGHT!!!"

Sort of reminds me of something...

Wheatleys voice is a valve guy. It was meant to be placeholder for animations.

Everyone loves him like a bucket of caramel though, so they're thinking of making him the actual voice. Obviously the current one doesn't have any of the loleffects that glados does, and as CN said, approach is off a tad.

Revoiced, autotune fuckup effects and it's there.

Also, it sounded like he was saying "8" to me, but oh well, haha.

I think wheatley exists to fill the void left for the protagonist's personality. To be honest, I like that void. Generally I dislike characters that have this purpose (navi, other fairy bitch from majora's mask) but wheatley's pretty charming.
