The OS died on my laptop and I need to recover the data from it. Ive tried putting it in an external enclosure but XP claimed it needed drivers and to fromat my hard drive., Then I installed fedora13 on a flash drive booted up the computer and it said the drive was not responding. I'm stumped, any ideas?

You should have backed up. Is there any auditory signs that the drive is failing (clicking, whirring then stopping, god forbid screeching)?

If it's a motor/controller/whatever failure -- then you're going to need to send it to a company like DriveSavers (costs are generally >1000$ per repair).

If it's a bad sector... you could try a 90$ copy of Spinrite. Mirror the drive first... just in case.

Sounds like it could either be a dead drive or a dirty drive. If you can, just try hooking it up to another Windows computer and running chkdsk /r on it. If that doesn't fix it, you could always give SpinRite a shot.

At least the drive is still recognized.
