youre not the only one man, the 3ds snuck right up on me too. i looked up the release date for golden sun 3 and got bombarded with shit about "3ds"
anyone else feel like nintendo is WAY overdoing it with these DS things? this feels like a repeat of when they were releasing all those new gameboy models, except back then each successive one was a big improvement over the last. as far as i know, all the new ds games are still compatible with the original ds. dont quote me on that though
E: i mean seriously, about a month ago i took a trip to italy and i actually saw kids taking pictures of monuments and buildings with their DSi's on multiple occasions.

Just to clarify, 3DS games will not be compatible with the DS. Unlike the DS Lite and the DSi, the 3DS is a completely new system. It won't even use the same kind of cartridge as the original DS. The 3DS is supposed to be as powerful as a Wii, and the graphics in some of the upcoming games reflects that.

The 3DS is the significant jump for their handhelds. It is stereoscopic 3D on a handheld device that you can adjust so you can play it in full 3D or with everything flattened out like a regular DS. It can also take stereoscopic 3D pictures.

This is a demo for Metal Gear Solid 3 on the 3DS. The full 3D effect is kind of lost in the video because you have to be situated parallel to the screen, but it is pretty impressive that this is how it looks on a handheld and Hideo Kojima even said "The high level models are about the same quality as the stuff we made on the PlayStation 3, although it's tough to see this. If we'd had a bit more time, we could have made something better." (http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/07/07/kojima_on_mgs_3ds/)
There is a huge amount of third party support for the 3DS with a fairly large assortment of games (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/heres-the-list-of-every-3ds-game-in-development/) lined up for release and the older remakes are getting completely updated models and textures for the 3DS and are not just a simple port. Even Nintendo is remaking a few games (http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9033963) for their new handheld.
I stopped purchasing handhelds after my gameboy advance, but I may very well be picking up a 3DS on launch day.

oh wow this is alot different than what i was expecting. imo nintendo kind of fucked up releasing 4 different DS versions before this one, because i thought it was just another DS. i might be getting this too if it becomes relevant to my interests (re: golden sun 3, pikmin, oot)

It isn't for the 3DS, but there is a third Golden Sun coming out ;P

I agree that Nintendo kind of inflated the market with a few too many variations of the same handheld, but this is definitely one of the best directions they can take.

I'm definitely looking into this when it comes out. Need to see it before anything. So far it seems real cool though.

They way-inflated the market... the 3ds won't sell nearly as well because of that, IMHO.

Nintendo DS and it's variations are the most successful consoles so far so I honestly don't see why 3DS wouldn't sell well. It has good specs and more importantly a so far unique feature. And it's not like it's even out yet so that builds anticipation and pre marketing.

I too would be excited for this if it could be shown off but I guess thats impossible.

Of course, mobile gaming is kind of killed when you have to wear goofy ass glasses the whole time.

But you don't have to wear glasses at all?

Paralax display. It's a display on top of the display, essentially, though they may have incorporated it directly into the base screen. The paralax film outputs a distorted version of the original image depending on the viewing angle, adjusted for distance, thus creating 3D depth. It will be (or should be) incapable of creating an image that "pops out", due to the fact that when rotating the screen, the image would pass the borders of the 3DS screen, ruining the effect. It will (or should be) used primarily to create an effect where the user is looking into a 3D world, as if the screen is a window through which they're viewing.
