When I played BioShock for the first time, I was expecting the Splicers to have personalities and dialogue, to be characters. They were characters, but that didn’t stop them from running at you with a knife. They were basically monsters with voice actors. It won’t be like that in Bioshock Infinite, according to Ken.

“When designing BioShock Infinite, we thought, ‘wouldn’t it be great if you walked into a room in this game and you didn’t necessarily know the dispositions of the people in it? Are they going to sit there? Are they going to attack you? What might set them off?’ We really wanted to have a notion that not everyone in the city was automatically hostile towards you. Instead it has more of that “Wild West” feel where you walk into a bar with your hand on your pistol and you’re not sure what’s going to happen to you.”

Love that change.

Here's what I think happened:

2K says to make a Bioshock title or else. Irrational tells them "okay," then goes and tries to think about how they can bend that to its fullest extent and make what's essentially an entirely new IP with some slight franchise flavoring.

Perhaps a bit cynical, but this is actually looking really, really neat. I wish the title didn't both suck and make no sense at the same time (surely they could use something like Aeroshock to preserve brand awareness) but shitty titles seem to be the trend this month (Metroid). I'm actually more interested into how they're going to integrate this Elizabeth character into the gameplaly (NO CO-OP PLEASE); they said it's not just a PoP '08 style PRESS A TO USE WOMAN. If anyone can do it right it's probably Irrational, but, you know, escort missions.

aaaaagh I hate escort missions. They are the worst levels that can be put into a game.

All the bioshock games usually have some kind of bad guy/girl with a philosophy about humanity that you eventually piss off.

my biggest concern here is that the element of drug addicted enemies may be lost. I liked that in the first and second bioshocks the enemies were essentially meth heads with magic powers. According to the article, the enemies in infinite are not spliced, just assholes.

I have yet to see an fps that can do a better job. What about Bungie's ODST? The night hub as the Rookie was simply incredible, and coupled with Marty's stunning piano scores that still retained a Halo feel...absolutely amazing.

I don't mean to knock off Bioshock at all though, and I'm overjoyed to see them moving to lighter environments. Never exactly enjoyed Bioshock 1 due to how dark and confused I was as to where to go but...that's probably just me.

ICEE

ODST pales in comparison to bioshock, in large part because the player already knows everything thats happening from the first 3 games. It also didn't nearly accentuate the idea of being alone in a mysterious place as well as bioshock did. Bioshock's voice recordings emphasize the aloneness the character experiences, and the idea that there were many people who befell a horrible fate. ODST has its voice overs too, but they focused on one character and her extremely cheesy set of events. I didn't even bother to collect them all, wheras in bioshock I felt compelled to scavenge every damned corner for those diaries.

The gameplay of halo is a lot more of a run n gun, pick up and play fps, wheras bioshocks was a LOT more demanding. the enemies were not necessarily difficult to shoot because of their almost universal body language, but the gameplay element of extremely limited ammo (unless you played easy) and powerful but easily depleted magic sort of set the tone for desperation. As you gained in power, so did your enemies, wheras halo is sort of universally easy. Despite bungies pre-release hype, this did not change in ODST. It was like "I'm alone, but oh wait I'm still a halo character." there was no fear.

Bioshock was also scary as fuck. The drug addicted enemies constantly running at you with a pipe made it really freaky. I dont think I even need to go more into this, everyone knows that game is terrifying.

The character in bioshock 1 was really, really well developed for a man who never speaks past the intro. When the game begins, all you know about him is that he's named Jack, and he's been in a plane crash. You basically end up following instructions the whole game, but along the way you learn about your character's dark past. The antagonists were very well executed too. You listen to andrew ryan's monologues the whole game, and come to understand exactly who you're dealing with.

Overall, extremely well done slower paced first person shooter.

The star of BioShock was Rapture. Obviously, you can't build a city on the ocean floor, but at least they had some logic behind it -- they were trying to stay hidden from the world, they could harvest energy from geothermal sources, and feed themselves with "Neptune's Bounty".

This sky city.... they're obviously not trying to hide from anyone. And what resources does the sky offer? Are they hoping a flock of birds flies into a propeller so they can make Pigeon Pot Pie? It just doesn't look like there are many opportunities to trick me into believing that place works and functions the way Rapture did. It just looks so surreal.

I mean, we were in Rapture because that was the only place we could go. We were stranded in the middle of the ocean. But look! That's farmland down there. I can grab a parachute and JUMP!

aeroshock would have been a kickass name too. and i cant even explain how excited i am to see that theyre adding another level of depth to the gameplay with the nonhostile NPCs

hopefully if they add multiplayer they dont put any stupid game breaking plasmids in like bees. for those who dont know, in bioshock 2's mp they fucking block your view and you cant see anything for like 5 whole seconds. its like getting flashbanged in cod, except you can aim it, use it 3 - 4 times repeatedly on the same person, and youre not affected by it. also stop fucking us on the DLC. in bioshock 2 they made you pay (i think) 400ms to download a file that unlocks DLC that was already on the disk, and whats more it gave you special attachments for your guns, but you could use them in normal matchmaking. so people with the DLC basically have a huge advantage over those who dont. then they released a second DLC that added all sorts of bullshit tonics (akin to perks in cod), two of the worst being when you die your body explodes (similar to martyrdom in cod, except you get no warning) and coming back to life. thats right, you can fucking die, wait a few seconds, then come back to life and catch people by surprise. again remember that this is DLC that you have to pay for so NOT EVERYBODY has access to these features, but people who do are matchmade with people who dont.

a bit of a rant there, but the point im trying to stress here is that IF this new bioshock has a multiplayer, they need to NOT do shit like i talked about above
E: and lol, american death star

Holy crap, that reaches a new level of awesome for gaming. The only problem I might have is the feeling of a ravaged society we know Bioshock is infamous for. I think either this will be a hit or a miss, a blockbuster or just another sequel.

It's 1912; a lot of shit that nations did back then was purely of a "because we can" or "because someone else did it and we have to do it better" nature. To me, that makes the city self-explanatory: it's a status symbol.

I disagree, I think Retro Studios captured the feeling of isolation better than anyone else has with their Metroid Prime series.

I love the whole World's Columbian Exposition theme, and it justifies the preposterous setting as an American attempt to prove with finality status as a great power. What with the Aryan lady liberty... the World's Columbian Exposition represents one of history's greatest false facades, with the White City hiding the grime of Chicago's industry. There is no better place to start if you wish to base your game around slowly exposing a villainous underside. Kudos on the art direction.

tbqh I'm not sold on the protagonist speaking. "I'D BETTER GO DO THIS!" is so redundant that it's redundant; while I think that it's certainly possible to pull off, it's going to be hard to balance letting the player know where to go without insulting their intelligence.

Everything else is awesome though

100% agreed. Everything in this trailer was highly impressive EXCEPT the first person animations (which have never been great throughout the series, so I've come to expect it). You'd think for a game that emphasizes the first person point of view so much they'd take a little bit of time on it...

Columbia = dysfunctional utopia in the sky.

Elizabeth = girl with latent psionic powers who has been locked away by Him for 15 years.

Your character is trying to save her from Him, the anarchists, and the current government of Columbia...he says so in the first ten seconds of the video. Beyond that, we don't really know much.
