View Full Version : World Eaters rule! Totaly better than Iron Warriors anyway.

So, not that long ago, I decided to get into Warhammer 40k by buying myself a battleset (a couple of friends did the same). I bought a Chaos Space Marines battleset, while they bought Space Wolves and Dark Angles. I was stuck between the World Eaters and Warriors of Mayhem, but eventually sided with the most bloodthirsty, crazy, insane Space Marines around. So, after assembling all my guys, I noticed that my army didn't reach up to the 1000 points that we were planning on using for our games. What could I get that would fix the problem? That's when it occurred to me : a Chaos Dreadnought! So, I hauled my ass back to Games Workshop, only to realize that the Chaos Dreadnought is a metal model. Seeing as how I've never assembled metal models before, the guy there recommended that I buy a regular Space Marine Dreadnought and convert it to Chaos with little bits and pieces from the battleset. So, I happily went home with a new Venerable Dreadnought friend, which I proceeded to force to join the Dark Side. My friend then got a nice Chaos Terminator Champion from a friend of his who was no longer into Warhammer (it wasn't painted or assembled), and since he didn't need it due to him having Dark Angles, he gave it to me for free, yay! Seeing as how I had no HQ unit, he was to be my new Chaos Lord, who finally brought me to 998 points.
A few weeks later, we got together and played a few games. I won a some, lost some, it was all great fun. However, I felt there was something missing from my army, something that could destroy anything in it's path from a mile away Seeing as how my Khorne Bezerkers failed me terribly during my games, this new guy needed to be able to kick ass in melee as well. But kind of Chaos unit could do such a thing while being extremely badass at the same time? Of course, the answer was obvious : Chaos Defiler! Now my army is complete (for the moment), so here's a few looks at what I have so far :
P.S : Sorry for the mediocre quality of some of the shots, I'm not that great of a photographer.

Custom Chapters > Canon Chapters
Anyways, they'll look fine from a distance. Up close you can really see where the paint has passed over the armor's features and hit the armor itself. You'll get better at this the more you paint, though.

Yeah, that's what I meant by touch ups. The Dreadnought is definitely the worst when it comes to those mistakes, as well as the first Chaos Space Marine on the left in the second picture. Oh, and I should also point out that the Icon Bearer also has a pretty nasty red mark on his left horn.
Yeah, I know I'm pointing out my mistakes, but it's to show that I'm aware of some of my mistakes. Thanks for the criticism though! I appreciate it.
EDIT : And yeah, I was planning on maybe doing a custom warband, but I decided to stick with a canon one to start and get better at it. I'll most likely do a custom one for my next army.

Again, before I bought my Codex, I was debating over Nids or Chaos Space Marines.

Sorry for the double post, but here's a little update as of this morning. If you haven't noticed the changes, I added a coat of blood red paint on the dark red that was already there, and then added some gold trim around a few areas. I also started putting a bit of dark gray at the back there.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs314.snc4/41033_425238125937_543415937_5513854_3324001_n.jpg
I've done a lot more work since then which includes fixing bad painting at some areas shown in this pictures as well as painting new areas, but it's too dark to take a good picture. Perhaps sometime tomorrow after I do more work. Oh, and the first post has been updated with this picture too.

Wait, so your group is Marines Marines and Marines?
How boring :mech:
Still, at least all your armies have a sound canonical reason to fight each other :iamafag:
As for the models, they're great for a first-timer. I really think you should check out the badab black/devlan mud washes. GW infuses them with some kind of freaky voodoo that makes everything (especially non-highlighted flat surfaced models like yours) look much better. They're great for beginners (no disrespect) and people more interested in having a presentible army for gaming than individual masterpeices that take 3 hours each. Slap that shit all over your model and you'll see what I mean. (Use the GW freebies first on your test model before buying, I'm not sure which would go better with the word bearers, just ask them)

I might get into this now. Not to play the game or anything, just to buy really nice models and give them a high end paint job then sell them back to people for a higher price. Profit.

Yeah, we're lame like that. At least I had an idea about what I wanted to do a long time before they did. I mean, the Space Wolves guy was thinking of going guardsmen, and the other was thinking Necron. But hey, I guess this is what we got. There was supposed to be a fourth guy who was definitely doing to be Necrons, but he decided that Warhammer was too expensive for him at the moment...
And for the mud washes, that's exactly what I was looking for! I was looking at my models, and it just seemed that something was missing something to make them look awesome. I cannot thank you enough for this. Any tips on how to apply them?
And I could play at my GW, but it's currently about 30 minutes away from me, and I don't always have access to a car. In plus, I'm moving into residence at University in two weeks and a half, and once again, I'll be about half an hour away from the Games Workshop by bus, since I won't have a car there. Not to mention I'll be quite busy too.

Splash it everywhere. It dries more or less evenly and adds depth to everything so you don't need any skill to use it at all really. Just do it on a test model first (everybody needs at least 1 designated test model!)
Or if you have to be neat, devlan for everything except the silver metals and badab for those.
(doing it over everything gives a nice uniform tint to the whole model however)

Yeah, so my camera ran out of batteries, so that other update will have to wait. However, I have a question for all of you since I need your opinion. I've been looking at my army, and I find it's a tad stale due to the fact that they're ALL the same in the sense that they have red armor with golden trim. Any ideas on how to have a bit more variety while keeping them distinctly World Eaters?
thehoodedsmack
August 18th, 2010, 02:23 PM
You could try using an exacto-knife to score dents, cuts, and marks in the armor, to give them a worn appearance. Or try using Green Stuff to create unique weapons for characters. Since they're Chaos, you could add some more graphic details, such as enemy heads and trophies hanging off them. Of course that would require you to buy parts just for that purpose, so that's usually reserved for something like competition modeling.
You could also try painting unique symbols onto the shoulders of your Sergeants/HQ equivalents, giving them a personal feel. That's why I prefer Custom Chapters, as I'll end up giving most of my army individual names and back-story.
Hotrod

I'm loving the idea of using the exacto-knife to put in dents and cuts. In fact, I'll probably go do that once I get off the computer. I was also thinking of maybe changing around the paint. Maybe have a few guys with gold shoulders and lower legs, and having a red trim there, or maybe having a few of them with black helmets or...I dunno. That's really what I'm asking for when I say variety, any ideas about that?
n00b1n8R
August 19th, 2010, 10:23 AM
Do dents with a pin vice.
Vary the cuts between straight lines (chanswords, etc) and small sets of parallel lines (claws).
If you employ a little google-fu, there's so many tutorials out there on this stuff.
Also you could probably grab an Imperial marine's tac or assault kit (especially the assult legs) to add some dynamic poses/looted equipment to your army (these guys are effectively loosly-organised raiders these days IIRC).

Yeah, so I had a little fun and scratched up my Rhino and a test Chaos Marine, and I must admit, I'm pleased with the results. And for buying another kit of Marines, there's two problems with that. First, my guys are already all assembled, and I'm almost out of glue (which is being kept to assemble my Defiler and to glue on the shoulder pieces of the rest of my guys. Second of all, another kit wouldn't be the best idea to buy right now, since I'm off to University in two weeks, and I need to save the most money possible. However, I will keep that in mind, since it's a great idea.
Sorry for the lack of picture updates, my camera is still dead. I should have some more pictures tonight though.

I'd make the scratches on the tank a bit bigger and one one side, I'd put a line of black under the metal (where the "primer" has been exposed).
Remember not to go too overboard either with your damage ;)
PS. Iron warriors are cooler than World Eaters, sorry.

So, the black goes only one side? Why only one? Sounds good though. Oh, and I've figured out a way to add a bit of diversity into my Marines. What I'll do is take 5 of the 15 Chaos Marines, and use them as Chosen Chaos Space Marines. And, to differentiate them from the others, I'll give each of those Marines a unique paint scheme while keeping most of the World Eaters scheme. For example, I'm almost done this one Marine that has the basic colour scheme, except has a black torso and head instead of the regular red. And then for another one, I'll have his upper legs being black or gold, as well as his shoulders. Each of these 5 Marines has been modified/converted, so they look nice and special. One example of these is the Chaos Space Marine shown in the first post that has the shield on his arm.
So what do you guys think of that?
PS : World Eaters are definitely cooler than Iron Warriors. Nothing beats bloodthirsty killing machines.

Urgh, it looks like you didn't even undercoat your models... Undercoat them in black, then for areas that need to be lighter, add a layer or two of white, and build up the base coat from there. I hated it when my friends rushed their paintjobs back in the day when we all had Warhammer models.

I'd forgive him for using white since his models are mostly red (hell, I use white for everything since it makes the colours more vivid :downs:)
Also, make sure you thin your paints to the consistency of milk (with water). You'll need a few coats to get the same solid colour but you'll avoid any streakyness (if you apply enough coats) and won't clog details.
GW paint is pretty notorious for that :x
E: wait what are we talking about, it's obvious from the defiler WIP's that he's using white primer.

Oh so I'm supposed to water them down? That's something I wasn't aware of, although it does make sense. I'll try it out and see what it does for me. Should I just stick the water directly into the bottle or should I get something where I can mix paints?
Also, like n00b said, I have a white primer which I then cover with a menachite (or something like that) red, as seen on the first picture of the Defiler WIP. I then add a coat of Blood Red over that. Remember, this is my first time doing this so it won't look too too amazing. I really appreciate all the tips though.

I'm a little embarrassed I didn't say thin your paints in my first post, apparently I haven't been to /tg/ enough lately :p
Get a little pallet (one with wells keeps the paint from drying out as quickly on the pallet but I've seen a lot of places use tiles so whatever floats your boat) and mix them on that.

Alright, that sounds really good to me. Yeah, sorry for being such a beginner at this stuff, I've never really painted anything before.
I have another question. I've been looking around at people's models, and they just look so good with their lighters trims and all that. However, I don't want to risk trying that just yet, in fear of screwing up my guys. So, my question is, how would a beginner like me be able to put trims on his guys in an easy and reliable manner? And what colour do you guys recommend that I use for them?

Hell, you're doing what a lot of beginners DON'T do, listening to criticism, seeking feedback and wanting to try new things.

When I say trim, take a look at this picture here :
http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx188/icemanbb/Space%20wolves/DSC02138.jpg
If you look at the edges and corners, the colours are a bit brighter, giving off a nice effect. However, I know that if I try that, I'll just splotch the whole thing up and it'll look ugly as hell, and it probably wouldn't be the right colour. Any suggestions? Oh, and if you look at the lights or whatever on the Dreadnought, it looks like glass, looking all shiny and stuff.
I guess what I'm trying to ask is how to make my models look good. When you look at models made by people that have been doing this crap for years, all their models look nice, clean and actually real while mine look really fake. Just by looking at the pictures, I can't tell what it is that I'm doing wrong. Here's an example of a very sexy marine :

What can I do to make my guys look awesome like that? Once again, I really appreciate the help, and I will definitely be checking out that website. Thanks a lot!
P.S : Oh, and one last thing, I've painted two of my Chosen Chaos Space Marines with alternate colour schemes, will post pictures tomorrow.

Ah, thought that may be what you mean. The lighter edges are actually called highlighting. Trim would be the gold bits around the sarcophagus.
Check the link I sent you for details on the lenses (which are really simple) and other awesome crap. I'm sure it'll help.
For blood red armour, I use a blazing orange highlight. Get a small brush and use the sides to go over the edges for edge hard highlights.
The second model you posted there is a great example of how to paint the hardest colour. The thing with white is that you can't highlight it with a brighter colour so you've got to paint it in off-white while still making it look white. He's also used blending (really visible on the above the right foot) and the eyes are an example of Object Source Lighting (OSL (http://blog.brushthralls.com/?page_id=1916)). Neither are particularly easy techniques to master (though blending is a requirement for high-end models unless you're deliberately going for a striated look).
Basically it all comes down to practice practice practice. It's expected that your models will look bad when you're starting out. You need to just accept that and learn from the mistakes you make on every model you paint. It gets much easier

@n00b : Ah ok, that does look really good, and it gives me a nice idea on how do add in some chips and cuts into my own marines. Even just by looking at that picture, I already have a few ideas about what to do to make my own guys look better too (although that PM you sent me was amazingly helpful too). I don't want to sound too egotistic or cocky, but for a beginner that has never really painted before, I would say that my models are pretty good, no? Because compared to my own guys, I've seen some pretty bad stuff...
@Warsaw : Thanks! I'm sure that with practice, you could do some nice stuff too. That's one thing I've learned over the past years of drawing (I never did post my stuff here, did I?). The more you practice, the better you get. If I compare my work from two years ago to what I can do now...man, I was so bad before :P
Oh, and Chaos >>> Imperial Guard, even though Guardsmen are pretty badass.
@UnevenElefant : Finish them! Trust me, whenever you leave a project unfinished, you always regret having done so. In plus, I'm curious to see what your guys look like ;)

Hey, you know that flashlight spamming is awesome. Even SM armour doesn't stand a chance to the massive bucket o' dice. :p
Also yes, I fall in the same boat. I'm much better at drawing now than I was two years ago. I had to overcome the natural tendency to draw anime-style...I don't even like drawing in that style. I just don't have a very steady hand for painting.

Woot! Update time again! Sorry that it took so long. Anyway, here's what I have :
First off, my Chosen Chaos Space Marines. I decided to make 5 of them Chosen just as an excuse to give them different colour schemes. Of course, I will most likely be using them as regular Chaos Marines most of the time. And yes, I know I missed a few spots here and there on the one with the black head/body, I'll fix them, don't worry ;)

And then I've been playing around some more with my Rhino, decided to do what n00b said and add some black into the cracks. I then realized that it looked a lot like a burn mark from plasma or a flamer, so I tested that effect out one a few places.

The flamer damage looks good and you're definitely improving with your painting. :)
Also, better idea for the paint damage - paint the black on first, then the metal. Should have posted that earlier.
It still looks like you're using monotone metalics though. Fix that asap! (atleast use washes, preferably dry-brushed highlights as well).

Thanks! And I worked on my older models to bring them up to par with my current ones. I was going to take pictures of them to show, but I got too lazy to carry them all upstairs. Yeah, about the metalics, I was waiting to buy some washes. But what else would you suggest I do with them? I wanted to fix them up but couldn't think of anything.

I like the way you're going with the paint job, although I do agree with n00b1n8R, try using some washes on the metallics, it will look a lot more natural that way. Also I like that little shield you added onto that marine, I might have to put a shield on one of my Chaos Marines.

Ok, so I've been gone a few days, been busy the others, but I'm back with a small update! Sorry for the two top pics being crappy quality, I just couldn't get good shots with them, and I was running short on time so I didn't try too too hard to make good ones. I promise I'll have better ones once they're done.
So, here's some cool Khorne Bezerker who's not quite done yet, all good, yeah yeah same old stuff.
http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/2189/dsc01236n.jpg
Anyway, I found all the red and gold extremely repetitive and I wanted to mix things up a bit. Since I was also very interested in the Warriors of Mayhem (I've always found that the purple and silver look pretty damn good together), so I decided to try that out a bit. This guy's not done yet, but he's looking nice so far.
http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/2268/dsc01235nl.jpg
And, while I was at Games Workshop, I decided to treat myself to something. They say pictures are worth a thousand words, so here's a 4000 word essay :
http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/9214/dsc01228v.jpg
But wait, where on Earth did I get that new arm?

So yes, I now have an IronClad Dreadnought ready to be converted to Chaos. But, I'm not too sure how exactly I should do this one. I mean, I want to do something different than my first one, yet keep it similar. Any ideas? And what's your opinion on the fact that I have two warbands in my army? Comment! Criticize! Worship!

(Khorne is red and brass, not gold :p)
Berserker is looking nice though, you're much neater and smoother with your paint work.
The bone bursting out of the Dread makes it look a lot more chaos'ey too. I'd really suggest you start conversion work before assembly though (eg, cutting off Imperial Aquila's, ad-mech symbowls, purity seals, etc) to make your life easier.
The purple scheme is good too. SHADE THAT METAL ASAP :gonk:

Right, so it's been way too long since I've updated this thread, but I decided I wanted to show off some semi-recent updates to my army. So enjoy! :) Oh, and I'm still horrible at taking pictures, and don't have a camera with me here in residence, so this is what you get, let's hope it works.
Oh, and some of my pictures are darker than others despite being taken right after the other. Dunno why, but I'll try to fix all my camera suckyness for the next update (should be in about a week). Some guys won't be shown due to having their pictures of pretty atrocious quality, but they'll be shown in the next update.
First off, here's a look at the regular Chaos Space Marines, which have all featured a nice retouch. I decided to have a bit of fun with one of them, changing up his power pack thingy and giving him a Venerable Dreadnought helmet.

This Rhino is still getting a nice amount of updates. Actually, this picture is quite outdated, since I've made a few major changes to it since this picture was taken, including the top hatch being gold instead of red, and having a bunch of details all around being redone.

And with the Rhino comes the Khorne Berzerkers that it carries in games (not that it's ever done a good job lately). Note that some of these are old, and others are newer, so quality will vary.

I'm currently working on some other guys at the moment which I'm extremely proud of, but I can't tell you what they are yet since that would ruin the surprise. Wow, that's a huge improvement since your August posts. I hope you guys don't mind if I start posting some of my Blood Angels, but I really don't have anything to show since I just started painting again, and I've still got school on top of that. Here is a freehand I've done and also two guys that I've painted along time ago. I have since finalized my painting "recipe" and have started using badab' black on all my guys. The recent tactical marines that I've done (and don't have images of) look much darker and grimier. My friends often made fun of my old paint jobs as they were too vibrant and red. At least I learned how to thin down paint and do even base coating early on:realsmug:

Thanks! The game is really fun though. I hadn't played for about 8 months, but I got back together with my friends (we had a little...let's just call it a misunderstanding so things weren't that good between us for a while) and it's great, even though I keep losing due to a lack of HQ units.

Sorry for the double post, but it's update time again! Here's one guy I finished not too long ago who will be a part of a squad of three. I would show you guys the other two, but one of them isn't done being painted yet and has another small bit of modeling work to be done on him, and the last guy is still in the process of being modeled.
So, here he is, my first of three Chaos Obliterators!
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/3428/dsc01419yv.jpg
http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/7051/dsc01417hz.jpg
http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/7964/dsc01416u.jpg
You may be asking "Why didn't you just buy the regular Obliterator model?" Well, let me explain. First of all, I really hate the look of Obliterators, being the big fleshy ugly things they are. I'd rather have the look of a heavily armed/armoured badass with lots of weapons. Secondly, the models are metal, which is a pain in the ass to put together and the paint seems to peel off, even with primer. Thirdly, they cost 35$ each. I decided I'd rather spend 60$ on a Chaos Terminator kit, convert three of them into Obliterators, and use the last two as actual Terminators and then stick them with that old metal Terminator which was shown at the beginning of the thread, as well as a Chaos Terminator Lord (which I'll be getting soon I hope). In plus, it gives a bit more uniqueness to my army.
And before you ask, no, the other two Obliterators do not look the same as this one, though they do follow a similar design idea. I got some extra bitz from my Dark Angels friend, but I didn't want to go buy a second squad just to get some weapons, so keep in mind that I'm doing what I can with what I have.
I hope you've enjoyed this update, and don't forget that comments and criticism are appreciated!

The thing about metal models IIRC is that they need a bit of a scrubb (small amount of soap/detergent and a soft toothbrush) to get the mold lube off them. That's what causes the peeling paint bullshit.
You've come a hell of a long way Hotrod, really pleased with the way these guys are going. I like the background for the blue dudes, I always like to see people mixing other elements into their DERP MARINES. ;)

That's just another reason why I'm not a fan of regular Space Marines. All their infantry look pretty much the same with nothing to tell them apart, while CSM have a variety of different helmets, bodies, etc. to make them all look different.

My finished dreadnought. If you're wondering why I glued a smoke launcher on the side of the lascannon, I imagined the canisters to be some sort of capacitors that store up energy before the cannon unleashes a shiny laser of death.

I was just thinking that I should really update this thread, but it looks like you've done it for me! Really nice Dreadnought though, I'm loving those capacitors you added onto the lascannon, it just makes it look even more awesome :)
I suppose I can give a small update while I'm here, thought unfortunately no pictures. I finished up my Obliterators, and I also ordered in Kharn and bought a Chaos Terminator Lord. Kharn has been done for a while, and has been very good to me during games. The Termie Lord is being painted at the moment, but he should be done by the time I get my hands on a camera to take some pics.

Great dreadnaught, the electrified lasscannon looks really cool, never seen one done like that before.
Rich reds, clean highlights, solid colours, detailed base, a tick in every box for me ;)
(I think the scything talon is a bit much though :P)
