I heard gearbox is pretty much picking up verbatim where 3D Realms left off. I have no idea if it's true but meh. Been playing DN since I was fucking 5, so I've got to keep the hope aliveeeeeee.

Haven't we all? The 2000/10 shooters are were its all at. But might be nice to go back and see how shooters use to feel. TBH i think GBX may have to bring the gameplay mechanics and graphics up to date a little more before release, but that'd no doubt mean years more work - so lets wait and see.

I still have Duke Nukem 3D on my hard drive, and, somehow, it's retained an odd quality that continues to make it immensely fun to play. Perhaps it's just massive amounts of nostalgia.

Gearbox does know what they're doing, even if they're not the most highly acclaimed or respected of developers; while I'm obviously not expecting game of the decade (and certainly not a game that's worth a 12-year wait) I'm hoping they can keep that little spark that makes DN3D so timeless.

Although it'll kind of be disappointing, in a way; you know, with world's biggest icon for vaporware finally coming out

Soo sick of the 'modern' wave that's been dominating the shooter market right now. Back when it was just the occasional 007 game, that was fine. Then Battlefield 2, fine. Call of Duty 4, fine. Now all I see are modern, 'realistic' shooters. It's all too damn stale.

Read a few previews: regenerating health is confirmed, as is an aim-down-sights function. Not sure about weapon limits.

I think the regenerating health and aim down sights is a good idea. All the games are doing it because it makes the game more fun.

I liked Duke Nukem 3D because you had to actually look for health and shields. THAT made the game interesting.

In Duke Nukem Forever, Duke's "Health" is completely removed.

No longer will Duke scavenge medkits and armor scraps. No longer will being extra cautious in a tight spot help.
Instead, his very existence is powered by his own massive Ego.

A shotgun blast to Duke's face is nothing compared to the disgrace he just suffered from the scumbag who shot him.
Only a just and fatal retribution could bring Duke's spirits back up.

By pulverizing enemies, gallivanting with the local ladies, having happy thoughts or taking a leak, Duke can repair his broken Ego.
Even more than that, by displaying his skills without suffering a scratch in a lasting battle, Duke can boost his Ego to 200%, have an Ego trip and ALL BETS ARE OFF.

When ALL BETS ARE OFF, Duke enters a brief fifteen seconds of nigh-invulnerability, enhanced physical traits and infinite ammo.
A whirlwind of destruction and boot prints, Duke has a chance to lay waste to anything around him in any way he pleases.
Regular cannon fodder don't stand a chance against this self-absorbed Duke Nukem, but only Duke at his peak performance could stand against the baddest of the bad.

This is regenerating health done right. I don't even miss health bars anymore. Fuck those things.

I've always liked aiming down the sights but I've never been crazy about regenerating health. Even ignoring how immersion-breaking and unrealistic it is, regenerating health, more often than not, removes most of the challenge from the game.

I'll always be a fan of health-bars because they tend to make me THINK before running into a fight.

EDIT: Though sdavis's post gives me hope; that sounds almost ingeniously appropriate.

I seem to recall Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project having an Ego system for health as well. Get shot, ego goes down. Kill enemies, ego goes back up. It wasn't quite as in-depth as this, though.

Man, am I relieved, though! I still reinstall DN3D once in a long while to give it another run through. It was my first FPS and I remember that thrill back when I first read about DNF being put together. I lost all interest about five years after that announcement but somehow now that it appears to be coming out for real, I feel that old nostalgic excitement building back up. Even if the game isn't amazing by current day standards, I find it extremely difficult to believe I won't get enough enjoyment out of it to make it worth the price. It still won't be worth the wait, but I can get over that.

PC version has been done for some time now. Gearbox, are doing the port to the console, and some polish. For Randy to turn up and spurt how fucking much of a Jesus he is is bullshit. 3DR got cut right before the dam thing was finished, and not a coincidence of timing either.
Take Two were planning on dumping them when the development cycle was over, the thought and theory is that Randy's little wet dream has been talked about for years.

They couldn't cut 3DR loose too early, when the majority was done, but there was still hard work to do and that is more of an investment on an unsure title, but they couldn't cut them off too late otherwise, there'd have been no issue to complain about as the game, would be done.

The real thing was, they want to stick a more "reliable" or "respected" developer label on it, in hopes it will sell more and lift spirits, because they're afraid of the 3DREALMS/AFOGEE label that might seem uncertain to the new generation of gamers in the year 2010.

That, and 3DR probably didn't agree or even want to do console as much as the PC (hence why pc was the main focus and done before), and Take Two got all up in their shit about how PC is dying and consoles are win and you should be designing for consoles and your wasting our money fu etc.

Sorry, but Randy aint no saviour. This is like the equivalent of Strider stealing masterz tags as masterz goes on vacation, so he can release Coagulation 5 and look like serious business or something.

I expect a shitty PC version, that will be stripped to match gearboxes console port, for consistency sake. Maybe not so much story, but definitely in usability and gameplay.

So let me get this straight, they went from lying about supporting a game after it getting 1,000 players to lying about their contributions to a game which isn't even theirs?

Actually, I shouldn't even say "they" I guess because Randy has been the one to say both lies each time. It would be nice to hear this from other ex-3dr members. Not that I'm calling the guy in that blog a liar, just I would like to see the original team come together and say "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF you 'Box!"

They should have just stuck with porting Reach to PC, not DNF to consoles :mech2:
