View Full Version : [L4D2] The Sacrifice

So yeah, I'm surprised there's no thread here for this yet.

New DLC for Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 is coming out, called "The Sacrifice." For those of you that don't know, this is the promised DLC that happens just prior to The Passing, with the finale that lets you choose who to sacrifice to let the others make it to safety. It'll be a three-map campaign like Crash Course and The Passing before it, however it'll be longer, with a new type of finale that involves completing three different objectives during it.

The L4D1 version appears to be just a simple map pack with a tweak to the sniper rifle to make it act more like the one in L4D2, whereas the L4D2 version will have all of the additions to L4D2 in it, including defibs, new special infected, the M60, but it'll be played with the original four survivors (yes, they got a hold of Jim French finally). Oh, and the L4D2 version includes an official port of No Mercy, again with the original survivors and all of the content added to L4D2.

As usual, free for Mac and PC users, 530 MSP for XBox users, and the release (no date yet afaik) will coincide with the release of the Mac version of L4D2.

Oh, and I got my info from this article (http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/08/21/interview-valve-on-their-new-left-4-dead-dlc/).

fake e: Don't forget to read the comic (http://www.l4d.com/comic/).

Just run out in front of the tank or something.

Also, see the way they word it?
"the finale that lets you choose who to sacrifice"

That implies some sort of vote system. Though god, I hope not.

Given we don't know how the finale plays out for real, that would be fuckawesome. Loner goes down with like 1500 bleed-out health, the ability to crawl, and can wield their primary weapon/throwables/medkits. Healing yourself would get you back up with 50 health, and if you go down again you get whatever health you had upon healing yourself.

10 dollars says they make an achievement along the lines of "Sacrifice yourself for the sake of your team x amount of times" just to make sure people aren't screwing over just one black character, lol.

Louis the the token optimistic guy in the group (if you thought that was going to read "black guy," shame on you). Usually those are the first victims to go in horror movies (aside from the unwitting deaths), not to mention how rolling Louis always seemed to get you screwed by special infected constantly.

Yeah -- none of the first L4D characters I really want to see die. Louis was my favorite (and oddly enough the one I lose least with) but all the rest had so much personality.

None of the L4D2 characters, in my experience, had nearly as much personality. I mean they (Rochelle excepted) weren't bad characters... but certainly nothing up to Bill's, Zoey's, Louis', and Francis' standards... not even in the same order of magnitude.

I honestly think that the grounds for the current l4d2 survivors to be awesome are there, they just don't have the right dialogue. There are so many awesome little things that Nick could reveal about his life (conman/hustler I think it was) that would make the game that much more awesome. Ellis is a good start, what with the keith stories and the talk of growing up in new orleans.

I mean, the original survivors bounced off of each other, they were a close group that worked off of each others personalities (Francis' constant whining and hatred of all things physical/Louis and his extreme optimism "it's ok guys, we're nearly there, for example), the current ones just seem to dislike each other and want to get it over with, "shut up and shoot" style.

Valve is at it again. The site's sacrifice pages ain't updated, despite the blog pointing to them and saying to look for new stuff. Ain't Valve Time the greatest? Comic's Part 4 is up, you just need to type in the link manually (or, "manually" (http://www.l4d.com/comic/comic.php?page=129)) to get to it.

Also, Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 are on sale for $6.94 each, $10.19 together. (http://store.steampowered.com/app/550/)

If you're having issues downloading the game because of busy servers, go into your settings and change your download location to somewhere like Taiwan or somewhere in Africa. It will download MUCH faster.

Extremely disappointing. It feels so unfinished, I didn't hear any new dialog. None of the survivors warned me when a jocky/spitter/charger was around...

Aerowyn
October 6th, 2010, 03:56 AM
Agreeing with ICEE here. For how awesome the trailer looked, this campaign underwhelmed me. The special infected spawned in pretty obvious places. Zombies for the most part were easy to spot and snipe with pistols, there weren't a lot of shocks and surprises or anything that made me feel any sense of urgency or panic.

Spoilers, it's a long one.

For what it's worth, I very much enjoyed the labyrinthian feel of this campaign. The fact that you had to climb up the gravel pile and down the conveyor belt to get onto the boat I thought was really nice (though how come zombies run at full speed up the gravel pile and I only go half as fast? Totally not fair) and the fact that you had to weave your way through all your surroundings to get where you were going... it was kind of neat.

I also liked the whole "someone turned into a tank in the train car" idea. But it was executed poorly. First of all, you heard the tank the minute you entered the area. Now... maybe that's okay for some, but I think it would've packed a punch if it had been a surprise. "Open the train car!" and BOOM, there's a tank, everyone screams and runs around, it would've been awesome. But as it was, there wasn't even any relevant dialogue leading up to the hoarde. No dialogue or reactions. I mean.... when you walk through a traincar full of bodies and walls literally painted with blood.... wouldn't you say something? A gasp? A scream? ANYTHING? But no. There's no lead-in to the tank in the train car, nor is there a reaction to the grisly scene you're forced to walk through. It made it less tense, and definitely not scary.

My party sent Bill out to hit the generator, and it ended so quickly that it took me by surprise. The ending of the campaign literally takes about 10 seconds.

Bill runs down to hit the generator.
Upon hitting the generator button, he has some sort of heart attack and just plain dies.
Camera zooms out a little as infected swarm on the incapped Bill. Maybe for about 6 seconds.
Screen goes black, victory music, with "IN MEMORY OF <insert user name here>"
That's it. Credits roll. Done.

It was anticlimactic. It just didn't have the feeling you should when you lose a team member. I don't know.

On the whole, The Sacrifice just felt boring and ham-handed.

And don't be like, "OHHHH IT'S JUST AEROWYN BITCHING ABOUT L4D AGAIN DERP DERP RAGE MOAR" because I am not the only one that shares this sentiment. ICEE and I had a good discussion about it and the people I played with were even like, "Shit dude, that sucked."

I'm not saying nothin, but I'm just sayin.

They did voice lines such as jockey, charger, spitter, etc too. On a versus standpoint the first two maps are pretty good with lots of spots to pounce from, but the campaign as a whole falls apart when it's only 3 maps and the 3rd map is pretty much the passing finale v2. No mercy has a hell of a lot of death charge spots and tight hallways for the spitters as well.

Oh forgot to mention I played through Sacrifice several times on both games, and the L4D2 version looks a lot more polished/prettier than L4D1. I'm thinking it was made on 2 then ported to 1. It also seems impossible to get sacrafizzle on the first game because your whole team spawns in as tanks, while in the 2nd game you retain SI and AI will become the final tanks.

p0lar_bear
October 7th, 2010, 08:35 AM
Well I got my hands on it, and with a single solo run through The Sacrifice and No Mercy on Normal, I'm also of the opinion that this ain't living up to the hype. The maps play good, but especially in the case of No Mercy, they're lacking the polish that would make them so special.

Port Finale possible spoilers:
The Port Finale is just weird, through and through. If you start one generator, it spawns a horde and tank wave. If you start them all quickly or at once (in coop), it queues up all of the waves. I expected the bridge to lower on starting all three generators with some sort of twist to getting to the bridge, but this wasn't the case.

The ending scene happened too fast. Once you restart the generator, all of a sudden the ending kicks in, which is your survivor falling over for no real reason while getting mobbed by a bunch of common infected, and there's so much noise, you can't really hear the other survivors say their final lines without turning on the captions. The comic ended with a tank bitchslapping Bill into his final resting spot; that should have happened, with the camera maybe looking at the other three survivors reacting to the sacrifice instead of a hurried pan-out.

As for No Mercy, IMO the lack of polish on the character situational dialogue essentially makes it into something done before, nothing special. Each one was given a line or two for "JOCKEY!" "SPITTER!" "CHARGER!", but that's it. All they do is grunt when they get jockeyed or charged, and nobody says anything about the victim (e.g. "Jockey on Francis!"). I ran through every puddle of Spitter goo I came across just to see if they'd at least use recycled Boomer-barfed-on-me lines, but nope. Oh, and as said, they use generic "look" vocalizations when coming up on boomer bile or adrenaline, as well as an unenthusiastic "okay" when picking up L4D2 weapons. I think Francis said it best when I pointed him at an adrenaline shot: "...what the hell is this...?"

AAA
October 7th, 2010, 05:11 PM
L4D has always had a lack of character during gameplay cutscenes. That's what turned me away from the game in the start. I own it, but it haunts me everytime i look at it. I know it's a quality game to get the meat-puppet rage out, but it seems that's all it was made to do. No REAL story, no real character, no real feeling. This game is nearly "No"

My expectations were left for dead.

Friendly ghosts show as white and friendlys you don't have direct view of that are spawned in glow aqua, normally you couldn't see spawned in friendlys at all. The aqua aura also applies to survivors you don't have direct view of.

http://screenshot.xfire.com/s/105418184-4.jpg

Green in the screenshot, but it flashes green/aqua. Easier to spot small things far away like pills when they would normally only glow white or something.

http://screenshot.xfire.com/s/105418221-4.jpg

Attacked survivor white in screenshot, flashes red/white in game. That applies to survivors being attacked or incapped survivors.

http://screenshot.xfire.com/s/105418231-4.jpg

The other stuff like no dynamic crosshair and preloading into ram is just nice to have, and the rates might need to be messed with on a personal basis.. but I've noticed with that set the hunter hitbox seems to be more steady and easier to deadstop.

*Noticed that game would have problems after minimizing with crashing when trying to return to full screen but I removed the preloading into ram line and it stopped that. Works fine for some but not all I suppose. Just gotta see what works for each setup.
