View Full Version : HCE Bitmap blending?

Is it possible to blend textures for smooth transitions in Halo Custom Edition? Example: Grass to dirt. I started modeling a map yesterday (I'm snowed/iced in) and it's coming along nicely. However, it struck me that I know barely anything at all about the editing kit. I can build the scenario file, lightmaps, and such, but when it comes to anything beyond that I'm dumbstruck. Also, any help on this project would be welcomed. I am not asking for this to be done by someone else. In fact, linking me to help resources would be welcomed too.
Here is a picture of an area I have modeled so far. Please critique my work, it would be welcomed. Note: Textures are placeholder, and the model isn't optimized/final.

To blend from grass to dirt you would use an alpha. Look at bloodgulch ground bitmap and shader as an example.

I figured as much. I'll look at the bitmaps/shaders from BG and try to gauge from that. Thanks for the help. :)
I'll just use this thread as a project-help thread for any other problems that arise.

looks pretty neat, i always find bsps look better in max then in halo when the terrible lightmaps come into play. alphas are usefull :) make your dirt or grass on a seperate layer and just put that in your alpha, much easier then making a custom alpha. any info on this project of yours?? :)

You can blend no more than two textures in Halo. It's more typical to have grass blend with a dirt texture. You kind of need dirt patches and trails to pull off decent grass. Otherwise, it will look too tiled and uniform. Blending between grass and rock is going to look strange in most places. Dirt or sand and rock should work better.

I believe I've figured out the bitmaps. Now I have something that I must ask. In guerilla, when setting up a bitmap tag there is a parameter that allows you to choose between 2d texture, 3d texture, etc. 3D textures are stated as 'slices' of textures in a volume. I imagine this to be something similar to what is accomplished on Epitaph from Halo 3 (see: holograms). However, I highly doubt that this is the case. Could someone please explain with somewhat descriptive detail as to what 3D textures can accomplish?
Also, how would one accomplish emmisive textures? Example being of a holograph. I'll research this further on my own, I would much rather have a better idea of what 3D textures are.
