This is why Valve is the only good major PC dev left. I was already impressed by their generosity with the steam for mac (owning the pc version automatically gives you the mac version and vice versa), but this is really more than I could ask for!
Nevertheless, I'll probably stick with the PC version regardless for 2 reasons - controls and modding.

Is this type of thread title ("I'm surprised nobody <insert action here>") our new meme or something?
That said, I love you VALVe. I now must also acquire a PS3, since this has some serious implications for other PS3 games later on. As far as I am concerned, Xbox Live just got undermined.
Buckshot, I think you can use the keyboard and mouse in VALVe games on PS3. That's what one of my friends told me, at any rate. Besides, if you link PSN and Steam accounts and buy the PS3 version, you get both!

2. Valve are absolute win, it's obvious they hate Microsoft and their DLC policy.
3. That's the best thing ever.
I would be more impressed if Valve were doing this for all their games (if possible). xD

Some people are saying this makes the PS3 version the one to get, but I don't agree. At least for me. It's paying $10 extra to get a version I don't care about in order to get the version I do care about for free. I'm just going to get the superior version and put the $10 toward something I'll actually have a use for.
Besides, who knows what condition the PS3 online experience is going to be in 10 months? Could be fine, could be the apocalypse.

In my dreamland, this shouldn't be considered a bonus, but an expectation, that if I buy 1 version, I can play on any platform.

$10 extra? It'll be more than that. Probably a ~10% preorder discount on steam then maybe another 10% discount on top of that if the 4 pack is available.

^ Probably.
But. I still want a PS3, mostly for Uncharted, Killzone, Little Big Planet, and Resistance. Cross-compatibility is a nice bonus. VALVe is also probably pushing the PS3 version because it costs more and therefore they likely turn a higher profit on sales of it. However, they aren't willing to screw PC players, their biggest customer demographic. Sound business logic.

A lot of gamers would rather play their games on a giant HDTV than on a smaller desk monitor or laptop screen.
I guess you can hook up any modern PC to a HDTV these days with HDMI becoming standard on many video cards and laptops, but the placement of the keyboard and mouse might be a problem!
Then you have the console fags who don't want to spend money on a gaming PC, etc...

You also don't need HDMI for HD. VGA can carry a 1080p signal just fine.

Yes VGA does great for image. But does it carry sound? :P Most people are too lazy to handle the cabling. Then again, you can just use a single optical wire for sound if your mobo/soundcard supports it.

I don't even know how to wire a system for surround sound that isn't a PC.

There's no difference... You plug your speakers into the A/V receiver and then plug the A/V receiver into your PC or other components. In most cases, PC speakers just come with an audio receiver.
Speakers are pretty much generic to setup.
Warsaw
February 9th, 2011, 10:03 PM
I mean without an A/V receiver. I don't have one. I know a friend of mine who does 5.1 without one, I just forgot how.
Cortexian
February 9th, 2011, 10:10 PM
Well on a PC your receiver is usually integrated into one of the speaker components, the volume control or something (my Logitech Z-5500's have the receiver built into the sub). Then that plugs into your PC via the sound card on your PC.
Warsaw
February 12th, 2011, 11:36 PM
And that's where it gets strange. TV sets don't generally have the Black/Green/Orange cables to plug into.
Cortexian
February 12th, 2011, 11:56 PM
Correct, if using PC speakers with a TO you'd have to use the coaxial or optical connection instead of the "direct" connection (Black/Lime/Orange) plugs. Or if you're using actual home theater/tv speakers and a receiver the speakers will connect to the receiver and then the receiver will use HDMI or a combination of audio/video cables to the television.

Valve doesn't gives a shit about that console.
Microsoft thinks they're too cool being worse control freaks than Sony with their hardware.

Is that why they've offered Geohot the chance to hack their new windows phone?
And put an offer out for people to hack the kinect?

Microsoft said no cross-platform play unless the game was Games for Windows Live... and they don't allow Steam on their platform.
The 360 is easier to develop for, but the PS3 is easier to deal with.
And the PC is the best.

The xbox is one hardware, sony are notorious for being tight arsed control freaks in nearly all the markets they're in.
They are after all the lot who invented SecuROM.
