A chance for redeeming qualities in this spin-off of FF13? For those of us who enjoyed the environments, the leveling system, and the battle system, maybe this new game will provide us for what we want; a non-narrow and more spacious FF13. Although much isn't known yet, the link provides an announcement trailer. Looks pretty cool. Any ideas about some of the stuff shown?

No that was FF13-Versus. Unlike that, this is seemingly going to relate to the first one.

i dont get why they're making a sequel. i think its a bad move considering how bad FF's reputation has gotten since 13 and 14. They should have waited a few years before announcing anything.

Or they can finally make a new IP. Let Final Fantasy die, it's had roughly 20 games already. The joke that it was a shockingly successful last ditch game by the developer is up.

Let Final Fantasy die
I'd like to see a decent game on current gen consoles at least before they did that.

I'm not liking Lightning's impractically-revealing, stupidly-feathery armor. Seriously, put on some pants, please. And those feathers remind me of Yuna's X-2 outfit in a bad way.

I wouldn't be surprised if this game is filled up with all of the content cut from the previous game. SE said that they had DLC plans for FFXIII and enough cut content to make a sequel. FFXIII-2 could very well end up full of content that wasn't even good enough to be in the first game. That said, I do hope SE makes an honest effort to turn the game into everything the first one should have been. Give the world more life, the battle system more depth, and properly pace/structure the story.

SE didn't have plans for DLC. http://kotaku.com/5471819/square-enix-has-no-plans-for-final-fantasy-xiii-dlc
In terms of major changes, i dont see FFXIII-2 having them. FFXIII-VS on the other hand will be a good addition to the series.

Recently, in a Dutch Official Playstation Magazine issue there was an interview with game producer Yoshinori Kitase where DLC was mentioned. Kitase stated that due to plans of having a simultaneous release, both Western and Japanese versions of the game would be identical. However, with the Western version taking a little longer than expected, they have prepared "a DLC but it will arrive a little later."

Screw FFXIII-Versus, just make more main console Kingdom Hearts games again. I like portable games as much as the next guy, but I'm tired of having to buy new portable consoles to play a handful of games. The next one is scheduled as Kingdom Hearts 3DS. Whether or not it's the legit KH3 or not, I still wish Square Enix would make Kingdom Hearts for people who don't want to carry PSPs and Gameboys around anymore.
But considering Verus will be the next closest thing, I look forward to it granted it's KH enough battle-system-wise. I also wish they would go ahead and announce/change the platforms Versus will be on to include the Xbox 360 (it's currently rumored to be PS3 only).

All you need to play in the Final Fantasy world, sadly. The first one is okay mostly because it was the stock original RPG. I got about 5 hours into XIII and quit. The games since IX have really been rubbish, and even since VII they have never lived up to the massive hype they have built up while in development.
E: Just saw the FF XIII Versus trailer and gameplay stuff. I liked Kingdom Hearts quite a bit, so this might be worth it. I've always thought they should switch to that system since it came out anyways.

Not to have a bad reason for playing the games, but my favorite reason for continuing throughout FF games is the music if I'm not interested in the battles or plot. That and Grand Pulse are what saved me from thinking XIII was bland.

Yeah thats true, they do have a very consistently well made soundtrack. I wish I'd brought XIII to school, I might have finally had time to play that shit this term.

Versus Gameplay Trailer. Reminds me of an expanded Crisis Core with a party system.

Cutscenes look amazing as always. but the gameplay looked 'meh.' Definitely a step up from turn-based bull in my opinion, but not as refined as games in a similar format (God of War comes to mind).

I can't really tell how the battle system works tbh. Is it like Kingdom Hearts, or is it an open range version of the XIII battles? Hard t tell in that video. I agree with Warsaw that God of War comes to mind as a game that looks a lot more refined for open stream style battles. The gun-play looks terrible and is simply a bad idea IMO. There is also a lot of work that need to be done with the cameras before shipping.
As far as "better than turn based", some of us really liked the turn based...

Which is why I added the "in my opinion" disclaimer. I've always felt it was a stupid system because the enemy is forced to sit there while I make my move and I have to do the same. I prefer thinking of the correct way to take down an enemy on the fly instead of having a lifetime to ponder it out on paper. It's more exciting.

It's more like Kingdom Hearts and Crisis Core. I don't think enemies will randomly spawn like Kingdom Hearts, but you'll definitely have the ability to free-roam around, at least that's what I think is the case. If you look at one character using the gun in 3rd Person and shooting, I don't see how it'd be like in FF-XIII.

To Warsaw: I didn't mean for it to sound that way lol. Defensively I mean. I meant that I really enjoy that system but maybe thats because I play alot of classics. I think that on a modern console/pc the Kingdom Hearts/God of War style is definently better, and lets you take in the breathtaking scenery in a much more dynamic way (KH2 was a great example of this). I still really enjoy the turn based because it gives me time to think out my strategy, and in the newest games (the KH series among them) I really felt that magic was kind of thrown away. Yeah there were some uses, but it was never the "I took all that time training with magicite and/or materia to get my best attacks. Now to nuke everything..." feeling at the end of the game. To me it was like a "oh hey I leveled up my magic. Still not as effective as my sword..." kind of feeling.
That being said, I did enjoy the fact that the ability to use status ailments more effectively is one of the string points of modern RPGs, as in the classics it was kind of a side note, and was more used against you then used against your opponents.
DarkHalo: My point was that I hope its not some weird auto system or something. As far as the free roam I tend to *gasp* not enjoy the sandbox as much. Too easy to encounter a Behemoth King at level 16 or something. The game needs to be somewhat linear in order to have a story/make sense. Otherwise you just walk around aimlessly, which CAN be fun when done right, but recently I've felt like it been really over done and gets pretty boring.

I don't think it'll be. It would be more like KH considering Nomura is leading it. Crisis Core has a good encounter system as well (at least from what I've seen), but this game looks alot broader and less claustrophobic as Crisis Core. Kingdom Hearts has the best encounter system for an Action RPG though; even 358/2 Days and Re:Coded both have nice encounter systems (The only issue I found with 358/2 Days would be that the number "magic casts" could never get high enough and Re:Coded suffered from repetitive fighting/DS memory/see my review for more).
I also bought FF:Crisis Core for $10 today at Gamestop. The PSP actually still has an exciting lifetime ahead of it before the NGP's release Holiday '11/'12. I don't have an actual PSP yet (money for Prom, College, etc), but I'm stocking my games so I won't have to go hunting. So far Birth By Sleep is $35, but I think that price will drop as the year progresses (hopefully again). FFXIII Agito and Dysidia 2 look pretty cool, two reasons why PSP still has a little more flare to it for veterans, but it also is a nice investment for casuals.
