i looked and no one brought this up..Duke Nukem forever has a RELEASE date...while I'm holding my breath (its DNF, we're bound to get one MORE hold up out of it), the game is slated for THIS MAY
The once unthinkable will soon be upon us. Duke Nukem Forever (http://pc.ign.com/objects/003/003880.html) has been dated and it'll be hitting stores after 13 arduous years on May 3 in the US before going global on May 6.
First announced by 3D Realms in 1997, Duke Nukem Forever threatened to become one of the more infamous pieces of vapourware before Gearbox stepped in late last year to take over the reins and help see the game through to completion.

I have no problem with it staying at M, and not just because I like nude ladies. It will force parents to actually do some parenting and regulate the games their children play. If they want to cry to someone about it, they can just look in the mirror.

Meh, Duke nukem has never been politically correct in any shape or form, DN3D even had a level called "Red Light District" and in time to kill you could go up to hookers and grope them, How time's have changed.
Nudity isn't exactly the worst kids are exposed to out of everything that they do get exposed to.
Unless of course the nudity is the kind that was in heavy rain with a man's face on a woman's body.

I'm just surprised it isn't slapped with one, especially since they slapped Manhunt 2 (is that the one?) with an AO rating. If this doesn't include more stuff in it than Manhunt 2 did, I'll be darned (it's DN, so it probably will).
And you're right. The real question here, is what will the repercussions of a game like DNF have outside of the immediate gaming industry effect?
Compare DNF to Halo Reach and tell me that they both deserve the exact same ratings. Something's jacked up here. I mean, it really shouldn't bother us if it gets hit with an AO rating any way since most of us are 18 years and older by now, but still. I shudder to think of people saying "Halo is M, and this is M to, so it can't be that bad" Woo are they in a world of hurt because the M doesn't really say anything about the game any more.

Peeing.
Gameplay instead of a crap-ton of cgi cutscenes.
Retro guitar riff.
An actual release date.

I was going to say I'm 18 now, but it still concerns me about how other M games will be treated as a result. Halo was originally Teen though; it's just crazy politics caught their original generation and caused it to bump up one rating.

just to throw this out there: manhunt and manhunt 2 are rated AO for the ridiculous "sadomasochistic" violence they contain. mafia 2 featured playboy magazines with real pictures as collectibles, had more than one instance of sadistic violence, and im pretty sure it now holds the record for the most F-bombs in a game. mafia 2 is rated M.
i think manhunt is the only game to be rated AO for just violence though. and theres not too many AO games either. all the ones that are are rated AO for lots of sex and nudity

FTFY. I remember watching a special on those. They were prominent as movie games. I think they're more prominent in Japan as Hentai in today's world. Those should be A-rated.

No, but every game is trying to be a copy of CoD in many ways instead of sticking to what they were before. Take Crysis 2 for example, from what I can tell by the multiplayer demo, it's as though the developers were trying to make the game as much like CoD as possible while still keeping a tiny bit of Crysis in it.
I dunno, just my two cents.

thoughts on the demo (I took 15 minutes to write this, you better appreciate it)
I don't think anyone, Gearbox especially, was ever under the impression that Duke Nukem Forever could ever, ever, ever possibly come close to pretending to act like it could by any means resemble anything that would by the most lenient standards be worth 12 years of waiting. I went into the demo not expecting the game of the year, the month, or even the day; I went into the demo expecting to be disappointed and underwhelmed. Even then, throughout the entire thing (all 10 minutes!) and afterwards, one prevailing notion was stuck in my head:
"That's it?"
One of the chief concerns about DNF's ludicrously protracted development cycle was that of relevance. Duke was a clear, straightforward parody and pastiche of 80's action hero tough guys; nearly all his most memorable lines, from the bubblegum to the head ripping and neck shitting, were ripped wholesale from films of the era. Ten years later, this kind of culture has faded away and receded back into middle-aged men's DVD collections; would Duke resonate in the same way he did 13 years ago? Well, no. Not at all. Rather than the loving homage it was apparently intended to be, Duke Nukem Forever feels like that awkward father trying to stumble around the youth's modern vernacular and behavior, making himself look even more out of touch and foolish than if he’d never bothered in the first place.
While I don't think many people will miss keycard hunting, Duke Forever takes many steps away from its Doom-like roots and towards modern shooter conventions, consisting of small arena shootouts pieced together in a linear fashion with the occaisonal puzzle or driving segment to break things up. The actual shooting consists of a familiar selection of weapons (pistols, shotguns, shrink rays, RPGs), of which you may only carry two at a time, and has you picking off relatively brain-dead enemies while avoiding bullets yourself. Mechanically, it's adequate; holistically, it's dull, bland, repetetive, unengaging, and just plain boring. While it tries to meld the pacing and style of Duke 3D with the modern FPS, DNF finds the worst possible place between the two, too slow and clumsy to match the frantic speed and hyper-activity of its predecessor while too low-key and uninspired to stand up to its peers. Weapons and movement feel unnaturally sluggish and weak, hampered by last-gen animation and sound work, and for a series that ostensibly prides itself on hyper-violence, it's pretty damn tame (and, consequently, all the more unsatisfying.)
The same antiquated mentality extends directly into the visuals and level design. Bloom, ambient occlusion, the duke-vision filter, and other "modern" touches are slapped on to ugly textures and models with such intensity and eagerness that they merely hamper the overall effect; the bland art direction and basic level design does little to help. While Gearbox has made much of the supposed interactivity in its design, outside of a whiteboard in the very beginning, I had a very hard time finding any interactive elements that extended beyond push-a-button-hear-a-sound, and even a precious few of those; perhaps the short length of the demo is at fault there, but it hardly does the full game any favors.
The thing that's changed the least is Duke himself; whether or not you find him endearing and funny will depend on how endearing and funny you think he is in Duke 3D. I personally find that appreciating Duke is perfectly reasonable but requires one to enter a certain mindset which is impossible to attain in the span of 10 minutes, although I do confess to impulsively drawing a dong on the aforementioned whiteboard.
Naturally, this was a small, small portion of the game so it's difficult to truly say whether this is representative of the final product, but I can't see why Gearbox would demonstrate one of the worst parts of their game for their first publicly playable demo. It's not that DNF doesn't justify 12 years of development, as nothing really can; it's that I have a hard time thinking it could justify 2. It's just trying way too hard to be modern, and in losing touch with the style of gameplay that made Duke appealing back in '96, it seems to have lost touch with just about everything that made the series appealing in the first place.

I'm in no way going to write a review.
But in the short amount of time the demo was playable (seriously) it was a lot of fun. Instantly taking me back to Duke 3D. I can't wait to actually see the bit of story they might have. I feel like the sections of demo we got, really weren't enough to judge what was going on. But then again, it's the same demo that was shown off when they first were showing that Duke Nukem Forever was actually happening.
Over all I'm not really disappointed, but not over the top blown away. I'm just happy that it's coming, and can't wait to play it.

I've been playing it since saturday and I'm enjoying it.
It has many thing's which have long disappeared in the market place for instance, there is a portion where you are shrink and drive about in a RC toy car and can ram into the legs of the pigcops making them hop on one foot whilst you escape.
This game is just full of novelties and it's a great change from the monochromatic form from modern games.

the people ranting about this game being terrible are trying to play it with a serious mindset. its like the issue i have with tf2, i went into it with a serious mindset and it pissed me off. if youre going into this expecting an sp experience like cod, gears, or halo, youre not going to have fun with it because A)production of this game started in the late 90's, and B) its fucking duke. its immature toilet humor with cheesy one liners.
i for one found the game to be enjoyable, and i bitch and moan about everything. it feels pretty half-lifey in single player. kind of linear, but youre never doing the same thing twice. seriously, every area is something different, which i absolutely loved. at one point youre shooting aliens, then youre swimming under water, then youre driving a big monster truck. there is a ton of variety.
i love the achievements too. theres no MP achievements, and theyre all in good fun, like playing the mini games and getting high scores, or killing all the catfish on hoover dam. thats another great aspect: all the little things you can do in this game. there are a decent amount of references to classic games and real world occurrences. there is no way in fucking hell you can give this game an F. the attention to details and other little things you can do aside from the main game alone earn this game at least a C. so fuck whoever gave it an F.
and the multiplayer is pretty cool too. duke's one-liners keep it fresh and entertaining even when youre losing. my only complaints are some of the sections where you have to fight those flying octopus things are a lot harder than other encounters, but as long as you strafe from side to side, you should be ok. you can also tell the game has been in development for a long time and has been moving from engine to engine and generation to generation because some of the textures are pathetically low res, while others are pretty modern looking.
bottom line is, bitch all you want about this game, but its still good. if youre not enjoying it, its because the gameplay isnt for you, or youre just too damn mature to enjoy some toilet humor. its not because its bad.
E: although, i do have to say, if youre an old fan of the series and youve been following the development since the 90's, youll see that literally everything changed since those old videos. its kind of how halo 2 retail changed a lot from the E3 demo, but to an exponentially higher degree.
just dont base your opinion of it on reviewers. im reading some of these reviews right now, and they all fail to acknowledge anything good about this game. its like theyre all determined to take it down or something.

first off, bullshit. you yourself have said that game is terrible because of all the hat trading and constant adding of new items into the game. i have always been against selling ingame shit for real money. that has nothing to do with not appreciating the humor in a game. if anything, it has LESS to do with it.
And no, It's not that I'm taking it seriously, it's that this shit is only funny to a 10 year old, which is how old everyone in this thread was when they were playing the first fucking game that they were all nostalgic about.
thats what im saying. if youre (not you specifically, just a general 'you') not finding the game funny, its because youre too damn mature to allow yourself to laugh at some of the stuff in the game. like stankbacon said, pulling a turd out of the toilet, and then duke's tone when he says "what the fuck" is hilarious. of course its immature, but thats what duke is. it always has been. its immature, that doesnt mean its bad. in case you missed all the other, more mature references, theres one point where youre running up a slope with barrels falling down on you, and duke is like "wheres a hammer when you need one...". its a reference to the original donkey kong, and its funny.
id just like to put this out there too: some people might have bought this for nostalgia, but i didnt. i never played any of the old duke nukems, and i only really got hyped for the game in the past couple months. i didnt enjoy this because of duke nostalgia. i dont know about anyone else, but for me it was just fun and funny to finally play a game that doesnt take itself so seriously. not to get too philosophical here, but in a society where everybody wants you to be mature and appreciate more "high brow" humor as your age increases, i find it relaxing to allow myself to be amused by toilet humor. again, the turd thing was hilarious.
im curious sel, did you play DN:F? if you did, i find it really difficult to believe you didnt find some of this stuff funny. a lot of the things i ended up laughing at were not immature at all, just cheesy one liners. "fork you" was surprisingly amusing.

The main problem with Duke nukem is it's been in development for so long and so many trailers shown that it's been given too much hype for any game to reach.
I remember when Halo 3 came out where there were a lot of complaints that it didn't reach the "potential" that it could have and the same is with duke nukem.
If you go in with no expectations other than a game filled with jokes and antics you'll be fine but anything more and you're only setting yourself up.

The way you described it made it seem TF2 was on par to battlefield simply because they both use classes with two teams.

New weapons eh? That would indeed.
Also I was explaining the basics of TF2, not comparing it to battlefield.

New weapons, endless tweaks to existing ones, shit tons of added particles that ruin FPS, pointless features that bog down the game, so much stupid shit I can't even list it all. Which is why I linked to the update history.

Yeah, I figured you were just being sarcastic since almost anyone not living under a rock keeps up with TF2 to some degree. Sorry about that.
On that note, a mod could delete the last few posts there and I wouldn't mind.
