Figured this was worthy enough of it's own thread.
Shit's bad ass. I want one.

That's awesome.... So awesome.

That's actually really sweet. I want one.

dont get me wrong, this is awesomer than awesome, but the whole thing sounds really noble. one machine can be used to make another? and this functionality is freely distributed? again, thats cool, but how is that going to work? it seems like these guys would sell a couple of these printers and then those buyers would just make more and sell them themselves. not only that, but if v2 can make circuit boards, how long until somebody makes their own game boy / ipod / other popular electronic device with this? it would be like piracy on horse steroids.
that being said, i still want one, damnit.

An open-source portable gaming platform that you can BUILD in your HOUSE. Get me in on that.

The RepRap can print all the plastic components of itself... Everything still needs to be assembled by a human.

That seems to be their goal; an entirely opensource world.
I'm pretty sceptical about how strong the polymer is.

can I use it to make a Glock? My new airport gun...
Also this would be bad if connected to a sentient computer. They could start to replicate robots to take over the world :tinfoil:

Yes but only the plastic components...about 50% it cannot build itself.

That video is 2 years old. I assume it has since increased that ratio in Mendel(?).

Seems the only people who would make any money off of this are the people supplying the plastic it uses.

You could sell designs that work with the thing.
Also: Think about how cool it would be to build the maps you model from it?

www.shapeways.com tbh
so much better on so many levels.
so much cheaper too.

how much for them to print you one of their printers?

in the video they said they were working on a version 2 that they hope will both use more components that can be printed, and allow more materials to be used for printing. they said they want v2 to be able to make circuit boards, so i assume that includes at least some kind of metal.

For circuit boards you don't necessarily have to be welding metal (not that you said that but just adding this).
I am more referring to like the motor, made up of the copper wire coil...the small gears etc.

well, if it could mold metal, then i think it could do gears. i see what you mean about the motor with the winding wire though.
perhaps if they added peripherals that could do project specific tasks like winding wire for motors....

The gears could be made out of a polymer, they don't need to be metal. I don't think the RepRap could make an accurate enough or small enough gear for the little electric motors though.
