Hey all, I'm reaching out to the community in hopes that I can find someone who is knowledgeable in the ways of mediawiki to help setup the framework for a wiki hosted on a site which will be based on modding (NOT malicious hacking) the various Halo engines.
Technical knowledge (eg, HEK experience) of the iterations of the engine isn't a requirement but could help with getting the wiki's initial pages built.
The ideal helper will have prior experience with making/editing wiki pages, maintaining categories/lists, developing templates, etc. Quality and structure is key here.
I can't offer anything monetary in return for your troubles for now (as I know some people consider their time precious). Also, you won't need to stick around as a helper once the wiki's base content is setup, unless of course, you want to :]
If you, or someone you know fit these guidelines then please feel free to contact me over AIM, "kornman00" or via email, kornman00 at gmail dot com. When using IM, please remember to introduce yourself or I probably won't respond (you don't walk up to strangers on the street and just say "hi" and wait for a response). When emailing, please use a descriptive subject (eg, the subject of this thread!).
Thanks!

Thanks! What wiki engine are you thinking of using -- or rather -- what do you want your wiki to do? Mostly it comes down to if you want read/write/create access to be distributed on a group-permissions basis... or if you want it to run basically like Wikipedia where almost anyone can do almost anything.

Why not take the information from the Modacity wiki?
Dwood
February 4th, 2011, 04:10 PM
Or just add to the modacity wiki.
Amit

There's not much modding specific information in the Modacity wiki. Hell, the HEK page has nothing on it!

February 4th, 2011, 04:34 PM
...This isn't about needing information to populate a wiki (which as Amit pointed out, modacity's is teh fail, there's no point in trying to help this site). It's about needing the help of someone experienced with wiki tech so I can orchestrate the data as efficiently as possible.
There's more to wikis than just creating a page. There are templates, categories, list, special pages, etc. I'm wanting help to make sure that the wiki for this site in question uses all of these properly.

And if its community is anything like it was before (see: HaloMaps community), I still won't be very active there.
That will need work.

combo breaker.
Seriously though, if the old halomods.com community flocks back to the new halomods I won't be interested at all since it was just like the halomaps community is now... Unless you bring some competent and active staff with you to mange the rabble.

Let's not spam up Korn's thread. He is super serial about this. :V

While this isn't a thread about a certain website that may or may not be under construction, I will say that I take selecting community leaders very serial serious.
This isn't your N-'s halomods.

So, with this wiki, what will be different this time? We've tried a wiki twice, but both times it decayed because of lack of user activity.
I really don't understand what Kornman hopes to accomplish by any of this, other than to stick it to Ghost and me. While Modacity hasn't moved anywhere in the past two years, that's because there is nothing to do. I'm spent, after two major overhauls including the initial launch of Modacity, which only borrowed time. Kornman and some members blame me for not doing enough, but honestly it's YOU who take full responsibility. I've given you guys the foundation to expand to other games, but you didn't care to expand despite asking for it. You kicked new members out, instead of trying to be easy on them. You insisted on banning existing long-term members because they share a different opinion of an issue from yours.
I've asked for help with redesigning some of the site, but no one had the knowledge of vB, web design skills, and PHP knowledge all in one. I don't even know where Kornman is finding help for his site if we couldn't get anyone to extend a helping hand to us! And if he is trying to hard to find help now, why wasn't he doing that before when I asked? I would have resigned or at least assumed a smaller role if someone could replace me. Both p0lar and I were trying, but we couldn't find anyone who had the experience we had learned over the past 5 years to troubleshoot.
I realize that I have been absent a lot in the past year, but I've been busy with school and personal life. Ghost has been busy too. p0lar has school and a promising job. Kornman is just now beginning classes after coming out of the Army. Many of our members are in college/university now, so that's added to our decline (and decline of the entire Halo community in general). Despite my lack of activity, there really isn't a lot I could do though. Like I said before, I've given you what you asked for, but you didn't take. What else should I give? I KNOW that anything I work on would be a waste, so I don't. I had hopes for the Cerebrum project twice, but that never happened.
Starting yet another forum isn't going to fix anything. We are still the last remaining members of the Halo community. You can say it is to plan for future Bungie games, but look how far banking on HOPE got us! Breaking up the last 3 Halo communities will only further fragment our already fragile existence. And the bottom line is that while you can change the site, you can't change the members.

1) We're not starting another forum. We're restarting a site and a community.
2) We're in full control. There's no waiting on admin X to do Y so Z can be started/accomplished.
3) We're about modding halo games and the like. Nothing else.
4) Modacity has nothing to do with Halo modding. All it has is just a forum space dedicated to halo pc foruming.
5) Modacity already has a reputation and user base that we didn't need or want to fully inherit.
6) We're actually putting pre-production time in. We're not just slapping shit on the internet and telling people to "have at it". That's probably the biggest difference this time. You have to teach a crew to fish before you can start a fishing club. You can't just start a club for fishing then grab random joes off the street, give them a poll, and expect them to make anything out of it. You have to provide them with not only additional tools but also skills.
7) This thread isn't about talking about the site. It's about finding someone versed in wiki tech (I've got some contacts already) to help us proprogate information and stubs to get users started. When the time comes there will be an official announcement about what's going on.
8) vB sucks my balls.

Sorry but Halomods was long like that before modacity gained that reputation.
3) We're about modding halo games and the like. Nothing else.
Something which has been declining ever since it was found that modding on the Xbox 360 was hard to start with and only made harder with the requirement of Jtags.
4) Modacity has nothing to do with Halo modding. All it has is just a forum space dedicated to halo pc foruming.
Kind of like how Halomods ended like with previously mentioned stumbling problems.
5) Modacity already has a reputation and user base that we didn't need or want to fully inherit.
And Halomods was any better for it's final years?
The very name Halmods was run into the ground even before sourceguy took over.
6) We're actually putting pre-production time in. We're not just slapping shit on the internet and telling people to "have at it". That's probably the biggest difference this time. I seem to remember being about when the last pre-production run for reshaping Halomods took place, several people worked pretty hard on the work done and the only result it gained was a complete riot by community and various staff.
The only way I can see rebooting Halomods would work is if either H2V or Xbox 360 modding got a radical boot up the arse.
But oh wait, Prom is still in the works isn't it? maybe that might give it a boost, or maybe tool radio [which apparently no longer exists]
H2V was put to sleep before release and I really doubt anyone will want to invest in a Jtagged/Dev Xbox for Halo 3/Reach modding.
7) This thread isn't about talking about the site. It's about finding someone versed in wiki tech (I've got some contacts already) to help us proprogate information and stubs to get users started. When the time comes there will be an official announcement about what's going on.
Too late, www.Halomods.com
Bold.
I personally I would add a tag to Halomods toe saying DNR, Halomods had it's time and has been gone for far too long for much of a chance to revive it.
Make a wiki with all the info by all means but don't try to revive a community that committed suicide several years ago.

It's a announcement as far as announcements go, it may not be a full press release and hype but non the less it is a announcement.
Without going so far as to start firing shots everywhere, do you really want the people from here, Halomaps and modhalo back on Halomods and back to square one with the community again?
I have genuine interest but at the same time have concerns over the whole thing double backing on it self again and causing a bigger ruckus than even the CMT SP release 1 did when the servers dropped down.

Well I think what Korn is aiming for is a more structured learning environment. I'm guessing that if you sign up there, you are expected to do something useful and not post your random mods or purely comment.
Random LOL: Currently XBOX.com redirects you to a bing search for xbox.com with no way to get to the homepage. My XBOX works, though if you know the URL.
EDIT: XBOX.com is working properly again.

Korn, sorry they are spamming up your thread. I don't know much about the Mediawiki system but I can surely help populate pages.
